There is an audience for this music, as there is for Jazz and Classical.

 

No one's looking happy on a Royal Philharmonic gig.

 

There was never much of a stage show on a Miles Davis gig.

 

Maybe we should be looking at CB and his genre in the same way, instead of lumbering him with unrealistic expectations.

It's good to see these Youtube musicians going out there and playing live. All three of these guys are fantastic musicians, and they will also be doing a song or two together. Gutted I won't be in the country to see it.

All of them were. Bernth was the guitarist for Austrian black metal band Belphegor, and Ola Englund has been in a bunch of bands over the years, including Six Feet Under and Scarpoint, and currently plays with The Haunted. He also has his own band, Feared. 

 

I think my point is that, right now, they’re most known for being YouTubers rather than gigging musicians, and it’s good to remind people that they do a lot more than ar$e about in front of a camera.

Charles B inspired me that learning bass would be fun, also highlighting in his videos just how easy it really is, so I bought a bass and started playing it.

Wasn't long before I could play all four parts of any arrangement at once as well.

Can't fault his playing or arrangement but there's something about his tone there that I actually find quite unpleasant.

 

Might be a product of listening through phone speakers but the treble frequencies are really quite harsh to my ears.

I quite enjoy hearing new things or techniques. I like to pick out little bits and try to learn them. Would never use in a band situation but it makes playing a little bit more fun.

I have seen CB playing in bands on Youtube clips and playing "normal" by his standard. He is a very talented guy who is able to adapt to whatever the band wants or needs. 

I'm guessing he now makes a small fortune from his vids.

Also like Dave504 as he's just a nut job that plays bass but its funny.

Not so keen on the other guy Danny Sapko. He can play pretty well but i just find his personality a bit irritating.

Not my favourite sound. Has a very metallic sound to me. Does that bass have a metal fretboard? Alembic tried that for John McVie many years ago. Not sure that worked either.

I like Davey and Charles in smallish doses. Davey seems to try to give off the impression that he has almost mystical abilities that make everything he does effortless, although it's clear to anyone familiar with the instrument that there's thousands of hours of practice behind his skills.

 

Charles makes no secret of his extensive musical education and I'm happy for him that he's found a way to make a living from it.

 

Sapko is a different beast, whilst he's clearly a very good player, his social media stuff has more of a stand up comedy vibe,he's trying to provoke a reaction with what he says rather than impress people with his playing. I've warmed to himin the last few months, but it's no suprise that he winds some people up.

If I'm not mistaken it's a LaFey Remington Steele with a stainless steel fingerboard. Vigier have made fretless basses with metal fingerboards too.

I find with the artists mentioned here , what works for me is to watch them sparingly . I’ve watched a basinful of Charles Berthoud , and don’t bother much these days if at all.

I was searching for Michael manring the other day to see what he’s up to . Then I found a couple of really nice clips of manring and Berthoud together which was really nice to watch. 
 

I do like Davie , and noted he had a battle with you tube which was worrying for him. I saw a few clips of him in different countries trying out basses in his usual humour and that was entertaining for me . 
 

Sapko I’m finding grating and not really my bag . Too shouty like an aggressive George formby for my ears . Too clickbaity !

 

Last of all ..Scott Devine ! I used to follow him a few years back . Very open , down to earth etc . Then the little irritating reminders in the middle of clips to sign up .

He just seems to be over the top clickbaity now ! Captions about why 5 strings are crap etc with his face looking at me . I understand that there are trends that these YouTubers have to compete with others incase they miss out ,but not for me so I won’t click on anything like that.I have unsubscribed from a couple of music sites because of YouTubers copying the jokey style of others that are about as funny as James Corden or Russell Brand .  It’s a shame that it’s all about algorithms..

@Cato and @chris_b if you listen to the aforementioned Charles Berthoud cover with anything else than your phone, you'll hear a nice and power B string with a super well balanced overall tone, nothing harsh as the stainless steel fingerboard is very close to a Brazilian rosewood one sound wise (as I already stated elsewhere).

That Bass you have looks very interesting. Not one for the masses, but certainly one I would consider a 'players' instrument.

I should imagine that it plays and sounds great!

As an extremely 'amateur' classical string player I cant help thinking CB has missed a trick. He's an insane bassist but its just bass. Im sure if he'd pursed a stringed instrument he could be coining it like Hauser for example. (Hausers a solo cellist but is a bit of a pinup for the instrument). Anyway each to their own I guess. But there's no denying CB's an exceptional musician.
