And  while we're on the subject of mid-'70's popstars, what about Alvin Stardust and that one black glove? Was he unblocking drains before he went on stage or was it something much more sinister?

Is this supposed to be funny?

Why drag Alvin Stardust into this ?

Shameful post.

I never thought of it that way.  I'm sorry if you have taken offence That was never my intention. I'm certainly not associating him with Gary Glitter. It's just he was part of the same era of popular culture.

I was thought  I was making a lighthearted point about how  abjectly crap stage gimmicks were back in those days by today's standards. I only mentioned Alvin Stardust because I vividly remember him and that glove during those days. I could just as easily mentioned how people thought Roxy Music had such a glamorous and futuristic image at the time. Nowadays they just look like students on a fancy dress night out.

Rock n Roll Pt 1&2 was the first record I bought, and I still love it to this day. Goldfrapp’s Ooh LaLa has a similar vibe with that lovely shuffle.
I won’t be watching the TV programme however as it feels a bit voyeuristic to me. OVMD of course.

As a quick aside: according to the Chart Music TOTP podcast, the one glove was to hide the badly stained hand he'd acquired as a result of a hasty decision to apply jet black hair dye the day before a TOTP recording. How true this is, I couldn't say, but the CM folks are usually very good with their research.

A little Boogie Woogie was brilliant it was a shame for The Glitter Band as they were good players.. I cant believe people are so suprised about him. There are still equally dodgy people on terestial tv that millions of people adore on a Saturday night. They follow like sheep making these people millions and people like Max Clifford are the master engineers.

I've seen versions of the Glitter band a couple of times, since Gadd got convicted, brilliant gigs they played all the Gary Glitter hits, went down a storm, I suppose if Gary's not playing them it's different, great songs.

Still not sure how the Michael Jackson legacy seems to escaped his very dodgy past

He sold the rights to his songs so doesn't earn any money from them anymore.

I went to see Gary Glitter a couple of times when he was staging a comeback (well before all the paedo stuff came out) and got his autograph. He was a great entertainer. The first LP I ever bought was Glitter. Oh well.

I saw 'em in the early 80s... They were great, but he was very, very drunk. which isn't surprising as his rider asked for a case of wine and two bottles of vodka! (I know this as my girlfriend was on the Ents catering team at Leeds Uni).

Jacko wasn’t ever convicted.

no, because of the laws in USA his was able to pay off his accusers, but enough has come out since to convince me there's was something in it, if it had been Britain he wouldn't have got away with it

edit, you could say the same about Jimmy Savile

My dad was in his teens when Gary Glitter and the Glitter band were at their peak, and he continued to be a fan into adulthood. He's still rather angry that Gadd's crimes have made it almost impossible to be a fan or even listen to his music for the past 20 odd years.

I worked in child safeguarding for 10 years, specialising in cases that hadn't resulted in a criminal conviction.  In Jackson's case the evidence would easily have reached the civil threshold for proving the allegations.  The case was used for training new staff in evidence evaluation.

I currently work in safeguarding myself and also do work for Social Services. You can do anything you want if you have money. Unfortunately this includes abusing children. Jackson was obviously a gay man who had an obsession with young boys. I know people dont want to believe it and i still love Off the wall and Thriller but after looking deeply into the evidence presented in the case i was pretty much convinced. The frightening thing is Pederastry has been going on since the dawn of humanity and people just being disgusted, outraged or trying to set fire to these people and chase them with vigilanties (which hinders prosecution cases more than helps)will just drive them more underground. I myself am starting to think that unfortunately and abhorrent as it is that people might be born like this.As i say shocking but working in the job i do people on the outside just do not realise how prevelant in society it is.

You don't pay out $23 million to shut down a legal action if there's nothing in it.

Ah, the tired trope of gay = paedophile. I haven't seen any evidence that Jackson was gay but plenty that suggests he was a paedophile.

I can't say I read it like that. It may be a trope but that doesn't preclude it from being correct in some cases.

Leaving aside the fact that a man being attracted to men and one being attracted to boys is not the same, there's no solid evidence that Jackson was attracted to men so conflating homosexuality and paedophilia feeds very much into that trope.
