Worst reasons your band broke up...

Female Keyboard player got a tag for benefit fraud. She'd claimed loads in disability whilst being OK.

I left, band then folded immediately. Shame, it was a great originals band. Singer and her were an item.

Recently, their both in new relationships,  but he was on holiday with her and her new husband....who's his double. In a photo, I thought it was him!

If anyone had done that in my house or car they would be attending their own funeral. Disgusting a**h**e.

Hanging too good for people like that, string them up by their bits.

I'm stunned that someone thought that was ok to do.

Dave

Yeah it wasn’t a pleasant situation to say the least.

I kinda signed out of the whole thing at that point and the rest unfolded within a couple of weeks after.

safe to say, we don’t keep in touch.

I depped with a band some years ago. One of the guitarists was done for murder, and storing his poor victim at a self storage place. He also 'visited' the place until asked to clear the space because of the smell. He got 30 years.

Jings Steve you lead an exciting lifestyle, living on the edge with murderers. Anything else you haven't told us about that we should know. :laugh1:

Definitely a theme going on.

Guitarists, drummers and singers mostly to blame with occasional keys player but never the bass players at fault.

I guess that's because bass players are always the nice people in a band.

That one is a bit extreme, I grant you. Generally, I do my best to stay well away from excitement.

This is more why we haven't broken up.

Still going strong since 2007. The right members, the right gigs, the right money and the right attitudes. Very rare.

I think we remain intact because we're not friends. Very little if any communication . We have a husband and wife team that do all the booking and make all of the major band decisions.

The drummer quit the band because our (first) gig was in BreaM, Gloucestershire, not BreaN, Somerset, and 'he wanted to take the family to the beach.....'
(Our guitarist had got us a spot on a Summer Bank Holiday Festival local to him, and all was going well......until the drummer couldn't go to the seaside.....)
The nail in the coffin was when drummer then coerced the singer to leave us to reform his old band.....!
(Guitarist and I were the 'Founding members' (although the guitarist said it was my band.....he'd back me as long as I didn't suggest Kings of Leon......!), he found the singer, I found the drummer, via ads/connections)

Blimey. I'm the opposite of that really, I don't think I could be in a band with people I didn't think of as friends. A big part of the reason my soul band has lasted for nearly 30 years is that we're all mates.

I think I’m more on the @Bluewine side of things. I want to play with people who are good musicians and not unpleasant. If they’re friends as well, it’s a bonus but not essential. So, being good work-mates I suppose.

Back to the OP.  Pathetic football rivalry.

We had a drummer who liked Nottingham Forest and a guitarist who liked Derby County. For those who don’t know, there’s a tedious local rivalry.

The ‘banter’ between them was irritating enough but when they started to wind-up audiences with their back-and-forth comments - to the point of fights nearly starting - it got too much. When a landlord said “don’t ask for another gig, I don’t want you back”, that was the end.

I'm with you on that Daryl. I think my current band has lasted so long because we aren't mates as such. We all get along really well and we keep in touch thru FB but we only meet up for gigs and rehearsals and we have a great laugh.  Now going on 6 years with the Glam band.

Not sure if its down to being less volatile with the coming of age or the fact we all live quite far apart from each other and socialising isn't really practical.

Oh good god, what pathetic behaviour. People like that need to just grow up. See, this is why I like rugby

Being in Bristol, I know all about local football rivalries. City and Rovers fans share a mutual hatred you would not believe. I recall one gig in town where a pissed bloke was going round the pub asking if there were any Rovers fans there - a City fan looking for a fight basically. When he asked us if anyone in the band was a Rovers fan, the 6 of us all said "nah mate, we prefer rugby" and he went away

Covers band I was in back in the 70s had an Irish drummer. He lived in a caravan in the middle of a junkyard. I never understood how it or he made a living, as nothing ever seemed to change stock-wise. One evening he failed to turn up to a gig which lost us a whole series of gigs with that club. We found out the next day that he was in jail, having had a row with his Mrs which he resolved by shooting a couple of rounds into the pillow on their bed next to her head with a .45 revolver. She was not amused and called the Police, who found several other weapons onsite. With the Irish connection and the troubles going on at the time, none of the rest of us felt like continuing so we split immediately.

Same.

Being in a band for me is, and always has been about hanging around with my mates.

But then again I suppose it depends on your level. If your a professional paid musician then it's just a job and you get on with it.

For me music is a hobby. I can't imagine anything worse than it just being a job and playing with relative strangers.

I used to do pickup gigs with a drummer friend who would book jobs, then fill in with whoever was free.
Guy comes in with a flying V in one hand and his 12 guage pump shotgun in the other. Leans both against his amp and starts to tune. I carefully introduced myself while asking if the gun was loaded. He gave me the

look we used to get from ‘Nam veterans and kept tuning his guitar. Good player , but did not utter a word all night…not a relaxing gig…I never accepted another dep request from the drummer…no idea what happened to the guitarist.

They do tend to be in the 'look at me, aren't I fabulous' category. Bass players in that category tend to be the worst of the lot but are thankfully few and far between.

One of the best bands I was in split up largely because of lots of drugs were being consumed and we all ended up a bit messed up all the time, anyhow...the final moment basically hinged on an argument about whether I was sleeping with the cornet player.

I can see how that could be a problem. Especially if the person you were arguing with was the cornet player.

I think of them as " good people ". And keep in mind we're friendly towards each other but not friends.

I was in one band with a talented but somewhat strange guitarist (I knew him from various musical events). I'm pretty sure it was our first gig, and he hadn't turned up. Then we got the news he'd jumped in the canal and was now in hospital. We were doing the gig with another band, who we shared a drummer with, so we also borrowed their guitarists - our set was very much standards-based so they didn't have any problems. I think we discussed another guitarist but it never happened, then some time later the singer got hit and killed by a car.

You're a lucky man Blue. This scenario would be the only way I could ever be in a band again.

Not needing to socialise with mental creatives or being dragged into their chaotic lives sounds ideal!

Been there, done that, but I'm 51 and a family first guy now.

That's kind of my point.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like many of these break ups are caused by how people react and interact with each other .

Originals band and the guitarist could commit to gigs due to his work schedule being unpredictable (fair enough). I tried to bring up the idea of finding a dep for the gigs he couldn't make but that didn't go down well. Broke up shortly after.
