Gumtree and strange buyers.

I’ve had similar experiences of people being really offended even though you’ve clearly laid out terms.

I had a pair of pa speakers to sell a few years back.  A guy contacted me and said he’d pay by a certain day so I put them on hold.  That day came and he didn’t pay.  He gave me some sob story about the money he was expecting not arriving in time and it would instead be arriving 2 days later.  I gave him the benefit of the doubt and told him that the money had to be in my PayPal account by 6.00pm on said day, otherwise I would take them off hold. He agreed.

Of course the money never arrived, so I took them off hold and promptly sold them to the next in line.  What followed was an absolute torrent of email abuse from the guy.  Even though he fully understood what I said I was going to do, he saw it as a huge injustice and called me everything from a pig to a dog.

Hey ho, you live and learn.

Being totally honest, apart from a strap last week, I’ve not had much luck on here.

I've had no luck selling on ebay or shpock recently. I think the market has stalled temporarily. I see basses on here that have sold in hours in the past, and they are sat languishing. Nobody's fault, just people are cautious these days

Shpock does my head in - never ever hear anything, there’s zero feedback if you’ve got the price or pictures wrong.

Everyones offering trades - it’s cool, I do it. But when you specify no trades it’s a pain to sift.

it is quiet, people want bargains as buyers, people want decent returns on their sales as sellers.

Thats true, people wanting bargains etc. I started using shpock for my other interest, swiss army knives (I know!) but it's useless for anything else

I have has loads of sales on Schpock for all sorts of th8ngs from household surplus to specialist classic car/ racing parts not to mention a couple of Basses bought and sold and some bargains buying pedals. I prefer it to eBay as it’s all cash in hand face to face. No fees either. You can also just leave stuff on there until sells, i thinks it’s about 3 months before they pull it. I tend to price things lower on there than I would on eBay but think,it’s worth it due to the lack of hassle.

My band used to use Craig's unit to practice

Aye it's a good rehearsal space, we'd rehearse there even without a family connection (although we don't get a discount!) as I'm not keen on other local ones. Nice to have somewhere clean and warm where the provided equipment is adequate.

There was a guy who was his second cousin on Stars in their Eyes years ago. He was like a stunt double...

McCartney does use a double. I had a tutor at uni who was working with McCartney in a studio somewhere. She was shocked when she walked out of the room to go to the loo, leaving McCartney behind her, only to bump into him coming out of the gents. Apparently it’s for security since Lennon was shot. The real one goes out the back door, the double out through the front door.

Can you imagine the ad for the job?

Must look like Paul McCartney. Must be willing to be shot.

Re "only shipping when paid". Is it not a bit odd that we say we will only ship when paid to avoid scams/rip offs, yet we expect the buyer to part with his money with no guarantee that we will post him anything?

Cash on collection is the only way o go with this, but of course you severely limit your market (unless you live in London or somewhere big).

but if the buyer is asking you to ship when really want cash on collection it's up to them to take the risk, when this has occurred I always quote my 100% ebay feedback

I don’t actually like meeting people, but it’s peace of mind.

Sounds a bit like me.

I’m convinced that my nervousness and awkwardness, not to mention the slight stammer caused by said nerves makes me seem dodgy around strangers or during a private face to face transaction.

I have Aspergers, I’m sure I come across as exactly the same as you.
