I think I'd rather the 20 quid if I'm honest.

Does seem like a great thing to have for a guitar tech though.

I've got 1 of these

It saves loads of time.

I made a couple in the past, including one for the DB made from a 3/4" socket with a slot cut hacksawed it!
About a month after that I was introduced to that Planet Waves one with the cutter, and I now have four of them including the bass peg size one!
Brilliant piece of kit.

You can get cordless screwdrivers for free with cordless drill drivers. If you already have one you could get a Planet Waves bit to fit it:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Planet-Waves-Drill-Bit-Winder/dp/B008BPI2OW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454157443&sr=8-1&keywords=Cordless+string+winder

Or, if you don't already have one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SPARES2GO-Cordless-Rechargeable-Electric-Screwdriver/dp/B01AAMRJVU/ref=sr_1_2?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1454158263&sr=1-2&keywords=Cordless+drill+driver

Or:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7114683.htm

Together that comes to £14.95, so you're not saving much, but you do get the driver bits, too. And if you keep your eyes out, you can find the screwdriver even cheaper, I have seen them for as little as £3. There is the option to go for a drill-driver, but they're larger and more powerful, so you'd need to get one that you can set the torque on. One of my drill-drivers cost me £7.50, but I can't remember where from.

Most bass strings only need 2 or 3 winds. Is that really enough to justify a winder?
Clearly your tuners are 1:1 ratio ;)

Aren't normal ones anything around 20:1? That's 20 turns of the button per complete rotation of the capstan. Times 2 or 3? That's quite a lot of winding.

...but if it's once a year, I can cope :)

One of mine is 28:1. I like to put a good 3 turns on for the E + A string angle. Cheap plastic winder has done 10 string changes so far, looking good and avoided using dreaded planet destroying disposable AA batteries, which cost how much?

I'm with you on that one. I've never used a winder in 31 years of playing
Same here.
Putting new strings on a bass or guitar is not exactly hard manual labour, is it? I can't believe some of the stuff people spend their money on.

Hahha lots of opinions.... All valid i guess...

I know all the other products available, the winders, the drill attachments etc etc.....
I guess this one is set at fairly low speed/torque, unlike a cordless drill.

Its not something i use, and thats after 26 years of playing at age almost 40. I dont think its a question of being lazy as such, but if you do set ups/ repairs etc or play guitar and change strings much more frequently, a tool like this at under £20 could be a great help.
Especially with basses that require neck off to adjust truss rods. I often swap strings between flats and rounds on one particular bass i have depending upon studio needs for that particular session.

So yes, not an essential tool, many alternatives out their, but for a dedicated tool for the bench, toque protected, speed set to sensible... 19 quid is great.

I guess those who have no need for one or only change strings once in a blue moon, they would likely not see the appeal, but for those who spend alot of time winding, and winding and winding......

Incidentally, i restrung my double bass last night, and that tool would have been warmely welcomed :)

Andy from D'Addario brought some of their winders/clippers down for us to use at the last Herts Bash:

http://www.planetwav...Pro_Winder_Bass

Wish I knew where they went...

I won one (in the bag of D'Addario goodies) in the raffle! :D :P
