Slipperydick
Anything from Harry Champion makes me smile. That guy was what you'd call prolific and a half. Could just be that they are familiar, as they are to anyone my age who grew up hearing sunday lunchtime [s]radio[/s] wireless though. Not really songs, but most of Stanley Holloways monologues amuse me as well, kids love em, especially Albert and the lion.
tedmanzie
Telestar and Surfin' Bird. Novelty records? Really?
Ha, yes - these are the kind of thing I was trying to describe in the in the original post, so for me Telstar, Surfin Bird, Popcorn, Quantum Leap (perhaps), Laurie Anderson Superman, Video Killed the Radio Star, are kind of borderline novelty/pop. 'Novelty' obviously isn't quite right judging by some of the terrible music that has been launched into this thread But you get the idea? Slipperydick
My next suggestions were going to be Star Trekkin and Bernard Cribbins. I'll have to make do with Charlie Drake, Tanglefoot and My Boomerang Won't Come Back and Nellie The Elephant by that band, whose name I've forgotten.
Chrlie Drakes Boomerang wont come back would upset some people on here's PC sensitivity. Its also the song that drove Rolf Harris to start writing a parody about winkles. Big_Stu
The Goodies Rule OK - 1975. I loved their version of "Wild Thing" when I first heard it watching this show. I still prefer it to the Troggs version, though obviously the sound is more down to whoever the sessionists were on it. This track was the B-side to their novelty hit "Nappy Love" on Bradley Records (don't ask me how I know that ) Bill Oddie was apparently one of the most successful UK songwriters of the late 70s, due to record sales and the greatest hits album they made. Old Man Riva
Right Said Fred - I'm Too Sexy (nice Hendrix/Third Stone From the Sun motif to boot) Jasper Carrott - Funky Moped (most bought it for the Magic Roundabout b-side) Great shout above for Benny Hill and Ernie.. and rare to see a video/film on Top of the Pops at the time. And a great shout also for Lieutenant Pigeon (being a Cov Kid one of the abiding memories of the time was seeing them on Top of the Pops and one of the band wearing a City away top - green and black stripes - in an era when grown men never wore football tops, other than to play football. Brian Johnson/Geordie did similar with a Newcastle top on TOTP a year later). Edited September 10, 2015 by Old Man Riva
