Of course, how did I miss this! 100% hits the nail on the head! A perfect blend of weirdness, sonic novelty and pop quirkyness :D

This is seriously my favourite record of all time. I want it played at my funeral.

I can't work out how to do the embed thing...

Sarah Brightman, before she went all West End, and married that Lloyd Webber bloke. Quite the eye candy when I was a teenager......I remember it well!

Bohemian Rhapsody.

Toy Dolls. Their reading of Blue Suede Shoes is a minor epic, and its timing is glorious :D

Excellent!

Bohemian Rhapsody.

I was wondering about this, it certainly fits my novelty blurring definition in the original post. Even though the song makes me feel queezy.

Surprised no ones mentioned Bonzo Dog Doodah yet.

I'll raise, your Bonzo Dog with both Bob Kerr's Whoopee Band albums.

A recent BK lineup

No so much novelty in the actual sounds as the not quite run of the mill subject matter.

Anything by Flanders and Swann.

Oh yes. For example:

From the sublime to the ridiculous - I know I shouldn't like it, but I can't help myself:

How about

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLEMncv140s

And of course there's

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGF5ROpjRAU

and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB3uVARNhmM

But maybe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32SkxLCZz_o

is more like what the OP envisaged.

No mention of Ivor Cutler yet? Some of his songs definitely tend towards the novelty category, but there's a bit more going on than that. I think my favourite album is Ludo, for its slightly fuller sound with bass and drums.
The songs are either daft like this:

Or whimsical but beautiful like this:
