Thing is there is a stupidly large amount of records he released. Can anyone recommend which album i should buy. Ideally ide like one which will be cool to study the bass in. lee650 Posted August 27, 2008 Share Posted August 27, 2008 Hi there Depends on what stuff you like to listen too, he covered a lot of diffrent kinds of music in his career, my first recommendation would be "kind of blue" with Paul chambers masterful jazz upright playing, later he did more modern fusiony stuff and some downright wacky stuff (Aura) my favourite,s were "your under arrest" with Darryl jones on bass and "Tutu/ amandla" with Marcus miller. but in my humble opinion for bass studying it,s all good!!! love Miles he,s great. Enjoy the music- LEE p,s , i dont know if you have access to a record player (i know vinyl) but ive a couple of his funkier stuff which ive replaced on cd, id be happy to dig them out and send them to you. hi, ive recently been getting into Miles Davis and im wanting to buy some of his records. The rest of the album & musicians are great too -- Includes Mike Stern on Guitar (who apparently was Fat at the time and the tune is about him!!!) My record player broke a few years ago. Never got around to replacing it. Which sucks cos theres nothing listening to vinyl. I may give 'bitches brew' a try sometime to. I like to f*** my mind up with crazy music. Whenever im in the pub i like to put Weather Report on the juke box, its kinda amusing looking at everyone that doesn't get the beauty of Jazz Fusion. Doddy Posted August 27, 2008 Share Posted August 27, 2008 I really like 'Relaxing with the Miles Davis Quintet' with Paul Chambers on Bass and 'Four and More' with Ron Carter. 'Tutu' with Marcus Miller is great,as is 'On the Corner' with Michael Henderson. Miles made so much good music that any album would be worth checking out. You might also want to check out 'In A Silent Way' (written by Joe Zawinul). Nice album featuring Miles regulars, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, among others. It is a very important recording. Ron Carter is a mother, if pushed for one album with him on Bass maybe try Neferti The Man with the Horn for Marcus Miller era. Michael Henderson's time with Miles is a bit harder to pin down. maybe a Tribute to Jack Johnson...there is a vamp on that record that stretches them mind considerably (well mine anyway) the Chambers era is now incorporated into one set from the Prestige(?) label. this is pretty much the Cookin, Walkin etc albums and includes Blues by Five which has a spanking solo. Bilbo Posted August 28, 2008 Share Posted August 28, 2008 Bilbo has entered the building....(sorry, am away at the moment and the net is hard to find where I am) Kind of Blue is a must - best selling Miles LP/VCD and the most influential jazz cd of all time. Others must haves: Sketches of Spain, Porgy and Bess and Miles Ahead are all Gil Evans collaborations - orchestral/big band jazz at its best - all Paul Chambers Milestones, Cookin' Relaxin' Steamin' and the other one - similar line up to KoB etc Birth of the Cool - created the West Coast sound in one hit (the band only ever did two weeks of gigs but still managed to change the world), Al McKibbon on bass Miles Smiles - Wayne SHorter/Herbie HAncock/Tony WIlliams/Ron Carter line-up - great band I am not a great fan of the electric stuff (there is better stuff out there). Tutu is not a players cd its a producers. Its a Marcus Miller CD not a Miles Davis one!
