There seems to be a change recently in "Basses for Sale"

Well,

I have just got back from the local pub watching the footy, and I looked (of course) at "Basses for Sale"........

Is it just me, or has there been a shift to some very expensive and rather esoteric (I've been waiting to use that word) basses?

I mean, every other one is a six string, hand built from fossillised ebony dinosaur bones for a very reasonable £6k or so (plus postage).

Wow.

I know, I know , I'm exaggerating ( and I've done so at least a million times), but I do feel that there has been a shift.

Perhaps we could have "Really Expensive" section and a "Meat and Potatoes" section of basses for sale.

Or maybe it's just me - having been hyper-sensitised by several large glasses of the old amber nectar.

Hmmm.........

There is quite a range - some budget gear and some serious "Coffee tables" as well as quite a few somewhere in between (most fenders, MM etc.)

Given that fewer people can afford the most expensive models (e.g. Top of the line Foderas & alembics) so they may take longer to sell. Plus the more custom or modded models may take more time to shift if they're not popular or reversible mods/options.

That's my insight. such as it is. Some insanely awesome examples of basses old & new on here - The limiting factor being money. (For me at least!)

Is it related to the introduction of fees? (I realise this discussion has probably been had already). The meat and potatoes stuff can often sell quite easily through free local adverts, so perhaps sellers are trying there first while the guys selling more specialised or higher end instruments see the benefits of advertising here rather more.

Market place is great but there has been a huge flux of timewasters you know the ones that PM you and say "oh Ill have that mate" only to never get back to you or the other ones who want everything thing for f*** all I mean we all love a deal but some of em on here do take the piss that could be a reason why a lot of people aint advertising the low end gear as it is not worth the hassle? I just dont know but the has been loads of serious top end gear on here of late

Speaking personally yes. I have happily paid BC fees in the past as I think this forum is well worth it but....

For me the economics have changed. I don't have any real high end value (1K +) stuff and if I'm selling now its because I need the money.
It costs nothing to stick things on Gumtree and you only pay significant amounts if you sell on ebay-its a no brainer. Thats where my gear goes if I need the cash. Note: All my recent stuff for sale has been sold off locally, even low end pedals that have been advertised on BC but failed to sell.

On the other hand If I'm looking for gear BC is always worth a look.

Note: If I was making some money through my music it wouldn't be an issue but I'm not :)

There is a lot of high end stuff flooded in a stagnant market. Either the real special pieces sell, or the usual Fender/Musicman combos. The 1977 Precision I have for sale has had a few PMs put in my way, and I could have easily traded out for something by now. But I am waiting for something to catch my eye, or someone to offer a trade with more cash then trade value.

Swings and roundabouts. There is not much free cash flying about, so people who do have it are shrewd and buy things that will sell fairly easily.

you might find that because the 2nd hand market has been so subdued recently that people with mid to low end stuff are hanging onto it because there's no point in selling it unless you have to. you might as well keep it as a back up until the market starts to pick up if you can afford to keep it. if you've got a more expensive bass you might want to shift it or trade it as it will release you some serious cash or get you a change of bass for something at the same level. Just a thought not fact based.

How one's mileage may vary.

About twenty or so transactions on BC in the last year and every one of them went off fine. Couple of people didn't read the 'collection only' caveat on one ad but no biggies. Everyone else was the soul of politeness and good humour.

By contrast I sold one item off Gumtree. Four responders, of whom one rudely demanded additional photos then went to the great beyond never to be heard of again; two wanted to see it 'immediately' then dicked around on times. When I mailed these last two today to say it had gone, one of them had a whiny little pop at me, saying 'it's really unfair you sold it!'

So, the final twat-score is Gumtree 3:0 BassChat

The OP raises a point though, maybe there is an argument for subdividing the basses for sale section. Perhaps have 3 sections, all the under £500 ones together, all the £500-£1000 together and the over £1000 together. Someone browsing with a particular budget then might find stuff that's relevant a bit quicker? Or is there some fancy button on the site that can list them in order of price anyway?
Fantastic idea but I would think it would not be very easy in practice as would involve a lot of extra work for the site staff/mods

As a 5 string player I always find it a pain to have to look through all the 4 stringers.

From the way sites that sell new & used instruments - a way of loose categorization could be useful - e.g. left or right handed (already implemented!)

Overall I think the volume of instruments is such that it'll be more than adequate for the time being.

Ideally you'd have them searchable by price range (updatable?!), string number, Scale length, Fretted/Fretless, Collection Only vs. Delivery optional, etc.

Maybe an up to date asking price in the title should be a requirement - then people can easily filter out bands they aren't intersted in.
That will only work when sellers mention the bands famous for using this particular model.

;)
