Hi!

Here is a new bass Shoot Out. In the Youtube clip below I compare 11 basses:

The basses are:

1. 2013 Gibson RD, Krist Novoselic
2. 2013 Fender Jazz Bass, American Deluxe
3. 2013 Rickenbacker 4003
4. 2013 Fender Jaguar
5. 2013 Fender Starcaster
6. 2013 Gretsch Electromatic
7. 2010 Gibson Thunderbird
8. 1970s Stagg EB-3
9. 1990s Cort Precision, P-Bass
10. 1965 Gibson EB-2
11. 1973 Fender Precision, P-Bass


In my previous clips I played through a combo. However, many of you pointed out that the differences in sound would be better accentuated in a 'line-in' setup, with cleaner settings. So, here I use a Universal Audio 2-610 preamp straight in into the sound interface.

Please tell me what you think!

This is much better. I enjoyed the sound of your last video but I felt the overdriven amp disguised the actual sound of the basses too much.
On this video, I really liked the deeper muddier sounding basses as they sounded better in the context of the music you played as a backing track.
I especially liked the Gibson EB-2. The others I liked were the Gibson RD, The Thunderbird and The Stagg EB-3 .
I think it's worthwhile trying the same thing with a different style of music to show how basses sound better or worse depending on the style of music they are playing within. For example the Jazz Bass may have been my favorite sound if the backing track had been funkier, or the Rickenbacker if the backing was rockier.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to produce such a 'class' video and 'shoot-out'. Special mention for the playing in which there are no apparent signs of boredom. A fine feat in itself..!
Your 'wrap-up' comments ring true to me, in suggesting that any and all of the instruments featured have a place in the spectrum, and will each shine depending on context. You managed to slip in a quick 'extra' for the Rickie, with and without mutes; it's understandable why you can't reasonably be expected to go through the entire gamut of all the basses, with their tone rolled off, or switching and combining p/ups. Nevertheless, a fair rendering of the tonal differences is clearly portrayed.
Some extremes in the choice of basses, from quite high-end to 'starter' models; despite this, none disgraced themselves (imho...), at least sonically.
Any more to be compared..? I can't help you there, I'm afraid; I'm a drummer..! Maybe a few older 'classics', to hold up against their reissue brethren..?
Thumbs well and truly up, in any case. Many thanks for sharing; I for one learned a good deal from that, and enjoyed doing so.

First up, congrats on the video, the added split screen visuals were more entertaining than just watching someone play for 10 minutes or so; loving the headphone monkey! The basses I liked the best were, quite possibly, the cheapest - the Jaguar and the Stagg copy, although the Fender P was very nice too.

For future 'shoot-outs' it'd be interesting, if possible of course, to hear some boutique exotica head to head, with a couple of mainstream basses thrown in for balance; what do you really get, aurally at least, for all that extra money?

Thanks! The 70s Staggs were significantly cheaper than the Gibson originals. It was cheap today as well, I bought it at the 2013 Gothenburg Fuzz guitar show for £170! Quality and soundwise this particular instrument is Gibsons equal, I think. Have tried to track down other early Stagg basses but without success, so I cant say if they were generally this good.
