2. Thanks! The 70s Staggs were significantly cheaper than the Gibson originals. It was cheap today as well, I bought it at the 2013 Gothenburg Fuzz guitar show for £170! Quality and soundwise this particular instrument is Gibsons equal, I think. Have tried to track down other early Stagg basses but without success, so I cant say if they were generally this good. Cheers Johan
nice job Johan, I liked the stagg to,is this a budget model or are the old ones superior ? The jaguar sounded great to me to ,nice playing.
3. Thanks for the kind words, gjones, Roland Rock, davedave, Dingus, Thunderbird, simon1964, Highfox, Musicman20, Prime_BASS, ezbass and Billy Apple! Cheers! Johan
 4. Thanks Douglas! Appreciate the feedback!
Good evening, Johan... Thanks for taking the time and trouble to produce such a 'class' video and 'shoot-out'. Special mention for the playing in which there are no apparent signs of boredom. A fine feat in itself..! Your 'wrap-up' comments ring true to me, in suggesting that any and all of the instruments featured have a place in the spectrum, and will each shine depending on context. You managed to slip in a quick 'extra' for the Rickie, with and without mutes; it's understandable why you can't reasonably be expected to go through the entire gamut of all the basses, with their tone rolled off, or switching and combining p/ups. Nevertheless, a fair rendering of the tonal differences is clearly portrayed. Some extremes in the choice of basses, from quite high-end to 'starter' models; despite this, none disgraced themselves (imho...), at least sonically. Any more to be compared..? I can't help you there, I'm afraid; I'm a drummer..! Maybe a few older 'classics', to hold up against their reissue brethren..? Thumbs well and truly up, in any case. Many thanks for sharing; I for one learned a good deal from that, and enjoyed doing so.
5. Thanks cytania! Love your description of the T-bird!!
Artfully done video, you are skilled Johan, excellent funky playing. 1. 2013 Gibson RD, Krist Novoselic - Very likeable, rounded, balanced but with a tiny bit of grit. 2. 2013 Fender Jazz Bass, American Deluxe - Not very defined for a jazz, less clang more rounded woolliness. 3. 2013 Rickenbacker 4003 - Trashy but commanding, reminds me of my Nuggets 60s garage punk CDs, cheap sounding but utterly gets the listener's attention. Even the mute was interesting and funky. 4. 2013 Fender Jaguar - Retiring, it doesn't want to be anywhere but at the back of the mix. 5. 2013 Fender Starcaster - Muffled, goes into the distant background of the mix :-( 6. 2013 Gretsch Electromatic - Lacks personality, soft with a tiny bit of edge. 7. 2010 Gibson Thunderbird - Big, gruff, like a high tension steel cable on a suspension bridge being plucked. Commanding. Stadium metal and Bootsy funk attack. 8. 1970s Stagg EB-3 - Another muffled tone, better than the Starcaster though. 9. 1990s Cort Precision, P-Bass - Funky, touch of nasal fuzz breakup. Good. 10. 1965 Gibson EB-2 - Muffled but manic, 80s synth-computer edge to the tone. 6. Hi! Here is a new bass Shoot Out. In the Youtube clip below I compare 11 basses: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ym5lUOL-btU The basses are: 1. 2013 Gibson RD, Krist Novoselic 2. 2013 Fender Jazz Bass, American Deluxe 3. 2013 Rickenbacker 4003 4. 2013 Fender Jaguar 5. 2013 Fender Starcaster 6. 2013 Gretsch Electromatic 7. 2010 Gibson Thunderbird 8. 1970s Stagg EB-3 9. 1990s Cort Precision, P-Bass 10. 1965 Gibson EB-2 11. 1973 Fender Precision, P-Bass In my previous clips I played through a combo. However, many of you pointed out that the differences in sound would be better accentuated in a 'line-in' setup, with cleaner settings. So, here I use a Universal Audio 2-610 preamp straight in into the sound interface. Please tell me what you think! 7. Thanks for the kind words bagsieblue, Lozz196, timhiggins, Bassman Sam and Musicman20! Great Feedback! and yes I will include a fully clean sound in my next comparison!
 8. Hi visog, Thanks! and I will! later this week I'll compare another set of basses. Cheers
You need a Rick in that line-up! Chris Squire and Geddy both get awesome crunch tones out of theirs... Good vid BTW... intrigued that the Stagg held it's own alongside others costing x10 as much!
9. Hi gjones, This was actually recorded at extremely low volume so the contribution of the amp, besides preamp distortion was kept to a minimum. How would you suggest to get a good comparison between basses with as little amp coloration as possible? Cheers Johan
All I really heard was the amp.
10. Hi grayn, badboy1984, Roland Rock, FuNkShUi and cytania. Thanks for your comments. Really appreciate it! Cheers Johan
 11.
First off great video production and recording. Thanks! Really appreciate the feedback. Cheers Johan 1. Gibson EB-2 - Gave the song a '60s mod band playing on an early disco record' feel. A compressed synthy tone. 2. Gibson EB-13 - Snarly without much rubbery body. 3. Gibson Les Paul Bass - Better but still snarly. 4. Stagg (!) EB-3 - Has a definite lisp, a raspy edge to each note, least good. 5. Gibson Thunderbird - Distorted metal tone, like Metallica had covered this groove as an attention getting funk cover very early in their career. 6. Fender Precision Bass - Ah that's more like it. Has the best of the EB2 and EB13/Les Paul worlds. The clipped 'pop' section works best on this. 7. Fender Jazz Bass - Also good but just a shade more wiry and clangy.
