As for soundung itself, a decent effect pedal board or processor can turn a bass sound into any tone wanted.

Cool, so you could equally play pick and make it sound like fingerstyle, thus regaining the mantle of most respected from those nefarious fingerers!

Of course, the really cool kids would then just bang their dicks on the strings. Nothing more manly than that. Not with an effects board.

So if finger players are better than pick players, where do I stand in all of this?

You stand in front of me, lah, so I can keep an eye on you... you dirty finger player, you :yarr:

You can easily groove with a pick, listen to Bobby Vega, but most pick players don't.

The pick seems to be generally used in a rock setting.

Bass snobbery isn't a good thing, so do yourself a favour, become proficient in both techniques and expand your playing possibilities.

I'm primarily a pick player mainly because I came over from the dark side. I also find it easier to play my Acoustic Bass with a pick than fingers. I'd love to be able to play with my fingers more and am working on it, I intend to persevere when I play my electric with my other band .

Struggling to find the difference between this thread and the recent 11 page epic?

Though it is one of those that's always valid to talk over again & again.

When I came back to playing the bass after an extended break I was determined to learn to play finger style, only because it seemed to look more proper and I thought my groove playing would improve.

I learnt the finger style and started using with my bands. Just didn't sound right to me, no attack, and I found with a little more thought I could play grooves just as well with the pick.

As has been said before, learning finger style means that I don't have to panic if my pick goes AWOL part-way though a track.

So IMO finger play is more respected, apart from few exclusions. No offence to pick-style bassists
So despite asking the question in your original post, you already had a fixed opinion about it?

I do understand fingering is a valid technique. As proven by the massive phenomenom that is 50 Shades Of Grey.

Anybody who says 'no offence' actually means to give offence.
I would be deeply offended if I actually gave a damn about what saddo finger jockeys thought ;)

No offence, but the original question is just plain stupid. Might as well ask what music is best to play or what colour bass to use.

Does anyone actually listen to music these days or are they too busy checking out the pick, the pups, the strings . . . . FFS!

I started off with a pick and over time became a finger guy. I use a plecktrum every now and again at rehearsals for a tone change. This has been discussed many times, but I would like to point out something else.
In Dutch a 'pik' is a penis; so if it's a pick or a finger, they both require a certain level of skill to master but the result will always be a different tone ;-)

Can't do that, it's a specialist area on Talkbass.com - think of the kids!

I prefer fingers but I'm also a guitarist who uses nails for fingerstyle on the guitar. To preserve my nails for when they're really needed I play bass with a pick, and guitar stuff that doesn't need fingers with a pick. If my nails were stronger I'd play bass with fingers.

Give the guy a break! It was his first post here, and I'm guessing he's pretty young and finding his way.

Could not even think that discussion will go that way!!
Don't get me wrong fellaz. I show big respect to some bassists playing picks relatively.
As I mentioned in my 2nd post, my concern is why many bassists prefer to play easy down tempo music with a pick. Because its cooler, more respective etc... that was all about it.
I just wanted your opinion on that.

And thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Whoever is offended let's go for a pint of extra cold one))

The technique used is of no interest to anyone but the player. All that counts is if it sounds and feels right in the context of the song and arrangement.

Unless you're on youtube, then you'll get 500 people going "USE UR FINGURS! U AINT REAL BASSIST COZ U USE PIC!!" After which they get given a nice fresh slice of my favourite pie, known as "f*ck off and grow up".

PS: LowEndBee, that 50 Shades Of Grey post has made my day, just completely out of nowhere.
