  1. As if I didn't feel old enough already...

I've just found out that later this year I'm becoming a great-great-uncle.

    Jeeves, bring my zimmer frame.

  2. Like an absolute idiot, I sold my Novation K Station a while back because I wasn't using it. Now, of course, I could really really do with it. Twerp. *slaps self*

And predictably, they're now selling for twice what I let mine go for.

    *slaps self again*

      @jezzaboyhas it spot on.

Just how predictable are we? :)

  3. Just been told by HMRC that I paid too little tax in the last tax year. Great. As if money wasn't tight enough already, now I've got to find an extra 30p a month to give them. :(

      martthebass

I've been hit with that for the last couple of years.....never makes sense to me as I only worked for a single company and they did the figures.  Robbing barstewards....

      StuartB

Do you have a way to double check the figures with a professional? The HMRC are not always right.

Totally worth watching just for Maria Doyle Kennedy's sultry, wonderful performance of "Never Loved A Man".

We watched it in our hotel room at the weekend. Knackered after a day walking around Camden. It's one of those rare movies I can watch repeatedly and never get tired of. A perfect film.

  5. Does anyone have any experience with St Modwen Homes as a builder? Have seen one of their houses that I reeeeeeally fancy but I want to make sure they're not shoddy/cowboys.

  6. Had my 'growth talk' at work yesterday. A sort of career progression thing that must be really handy for the younger engineers especially.

Boss's first question (admittedly with his tongue firmly in his cheek): "So Rich, where do you see yourself in 5 years..?"

    Me: "Retired."

Boss: "Want to expand your skillset? Anything you'd like to do in the meantime?"

Me: "Exactly what I'm doing now will suit me fine, ta."

    End of talk. :)

I personally enjoy being challenged in my work - I'm always fearful of stagnation and boredom.  Each to his own :)

      Daz39

Yeah - 2 of my 3 minions are in similar positions: one is 60something and happy to plod on, the other is my age (late 40s and is fine with being an expert at his middlish sort of level).

    4. prowla

I tend to find these HR box-ticking exercises tiresome.

I'm doing what I do, it's the right mix of interesting, challenging, routine, inventive, procedural, ad-hoc, variety, and fulfillment for me; I don't need to fill in forms to say so.

Setting goals and suchlike are an irrelevance; if the business gets to the point where they don't need me then they'll ditch me and if I decide it's time then I'll move on.

I've been working in pretty much the same niche for years and have no desire or ambition to be "promoted" or chase any other perceived progression or career path.

I'm happy in my lane and have no plans to retire.

  7. Today is a very, very good day. :)

      Rich

Yup. Pale finish, heavy relic, aged hardware. But that's enough about me.

  8. A bit of tweakage to my JayRay fretless. As it was based on an OLP 'Ray, it was originally passive... I'd intended to either buy a Stinger preamp or make one on vero, but then I rediscovered the 2-band EQ from my old Yamaha RBX765 lurking in the spares box, so I've fitted that instead. I'd forgotten how powerful a preamp it is. Absolutely brought it to life. I love tinkering with stuff, especially when it turns out as well as this has.

  11. Putting together a neo-prog covers project with my guitarist mate @Witters. I thought it'd be hard to find personnel but he already has keen interest from a drummer and a keys player. We're thinking Porcupine Tree, It Bites, Quantum Pig, Fish, Frost*, Steven Wilson, Hogarth-era Marillion... I'm quite excited by this.

    1. Rich

      Rich

I knew it was to good to be true. Drummer has announced that he can't rehearse the same night as everyone else, and doesn't want to do any covers but wants to do original material. None of us have ever met, never mind played together, but already he's diving straight into compositions. Surely it'd be better to do one cover to start with, to make sure we all get on and are capable? We've got to walk before we can run.

  12. In various locations across the country, railway workers are sacrificing their family Christmas time in order to perform vital upgrades to lines and infrastructure, improving efficiency and services to freight and travelling public alight. Spare a thought for these folks, up to their elbows in ballast and wiring and paperwork, as you tuck into your festive feast. I'll certainly be raising a glass to all my hardworking colleagues.👏🏻

And just in case anyone thinks I'm being sarky, no I'm 100% serious. I've done Xmas commissionings, and it's bloody hard work.

    1. jezzaboy

      jezzaboy

One of my co workers is working boxing day doing such work. The payment? £835!

As you say Rich, he will work bloomin hard for it.

    2. Rich

      Rich

We had one-off bonus payments for working over Xmas/NY, but only if we worked a load of shifts. Not for just one. Although we did get T+50% (or 75% for night shifts) for all hours. It does pay well, but then it bloody should.

    3. LowB_FTW

      LowB_FTW

This is the first Christmas I haven't worked it for the last 8 years.

Granted, it's not up to my elbows in ballast, I support an NHS trust OOH  for IT support, by my thoughts are never very far away from people that have to give up public holidays as part of their shift rotation.

  14. What's the difference between The Polar Express and HS2?
One's an improbable fantasy about a train, and the other is a film with Tom Hanks.

  15. Overheard an exchange earlier between a man and his very young daughter, in a supermarket car park:
Man: we're just going to wait here for a while.
    Daughter: why?
Man: because mummy's in the shop.
    Daughter: why?
    Man: she's buying some chocolate.
    Daughter: why?
    Man: because she needs some.
    Daughter: why?
    Man: *laughs*
It was a laugh that said "when you have your own bloody children, you'll know".

It's a great result BUT we must remain wary. It wouldn't surprise me if they instead quietly closed the offices one by one while using distraction to avoid publicity.

Fortunately, I've managed to avoid using rail services for the past few years.

It occurs to me, though, that perhaps they should look to attract customers (like me) back rather than save costs.

  19. Dog walks into a post office, says he wants to send a telegram.
"OK" says the clerk, "what's the message?"
The dog says, "Woof woof woof, woof woof woof woof woof, woof woof."
Clerk says, "OK, but for the same price, you can add one more 'woof'".
The dog frowns and replies, "But then it wouldn't make any sense."

      Reminds me of this one.

Remote Scottish village, general store cum post office, bell tinkles as the door opens.

'Mrs McDonald' says the postmaster 'We dinnae see you too often'.

'Aye, well, Mr McDonald died.  I'd like to put a wee notice in the paper, what's the cheapest?'

'£5, what d'ye want to say?'

      'Mr McDonald died'

'Feh £5 ye get 3 more words'

'Mr McDonald died.  Volvo for sale'

  20. Ska band's gig next Saturday is at a Conservative Club. Hmm, well a payday's a payday I suppose. Anyway... I've bought a special shirt for the occasion.

I think it's still OK on that part of the plate. It always used to be anyway... I guess I'll find out at the MOT

The letters and numbers are all the correct font, height, spacing etc. It's exactly the same as the old plate except for the clef in place of the stars.

    3. hiram.k.hackenbacker

      hiram.k.hackenbacker

I’m afraid it’s not @Rich. To be fair, there are thousands of plates that fall much further outside of the rules, so I probably wouldn’t worry too much about it. At least ANPR will be able to read your registration number (should it be stolen etc).

    4. Rich

      Rich

Yes, there's no way I was going to do anything daft with the actual reg number, it's asking for trouble. As I said, it's identical to the old plate apart from the clef instead of the stars and UK instead of GB. I've still got the old plates just in case I need to put them back on in a hurry. I can't see that happening though (he said hopefully).

Don't let it bother you. It's just social media, where opinions largely only mean something to those posting them
