1.
I can. Tell me you can't play a 5 string bass after a year. Then I'll believe you.
The problem might not be that he can't play the 5 string, more that he just doesn't 'connect' with them. I have no problem playing a fiver, but I just can't ever imagine using one in a band situation, so I don't hang on to them too long. I recently had a Spector Euro 5 which was incredible but it just wasn't going to earn it's keep - so I traded it for a Spector 4 string. I have no problem with fivers whatsoever, I just feel at home with a 4. Each to their own and all that!

 3. Me, 8 1/4ins (21cm). My favourite neck shape is that which can be found on the 50s Precision bass, but I also love MusicMan and Spectors. I'm happy to play slimmer necks but after a short while my body rejects them and I get cramp.
 4. Say something, definitely. I've kept schtum, 'for the greater good', on too many occasions. Imagine how the guitarist would feel faced with the same situation!
 5. I recently bought a Spector Euro 5 because I love Spectors, and it was a great price. I've never really considered myself a 5 string player but I like the idea and though what the hell! Despite being an incredible instrument it sooned became apparent that I had no real use for a 5 string. I advertised on here to trade for a Euro 4 and made a deal within hours!
 6.
Or, if you play double bass, half a string
Seriously?!
 7.
There's nothing special about that, just thump a P bass through a distorted amp.
We all know you don't particularly like Fenders, but that is a ridiculous response. I could play a Precision through a distorted Ampeg, followed by a distorted Matamp - two completely different sounds, and neither of which would sound anything like the tone in the clip.
 8. There does seem to some very strange EQing going on there, but it sounds great. Love the album version too, my drummer and I like to soundcheck with that one.
 9. Evening all! I have recently acquired a rather fantastic Spector Euro 5, circa 2007. Apparently it's something of a custom jobbie, transparent black finish showing the wood grain underneath, and all black hardware. Apart from this it's standard. It's everything I want from a fiver, including a stunning B string, but sadly I just can't imagine a situation where I would ever need to use it. My basses have to earn their keep so I can't really justify having this one sitting around for occasional home use. I'm over the moon with the Spector tone however, so ideally I'm looking to trade for it's 4 string equivalent. Ideally I'd like to do a straight trade, so any prospective 4 strings will need to be in as near to new condition as possible - My fiver is in superb condition, I am unable to see any knocks or scratches. On the other hand, if anyone fancies making an offer to buy the bass outright that's cool with me - £850 inc. OHSC and she's all yours. Pics to follow when I've got a bit of daylight.
 10. My Dad used to play this all the time when I was young, and he jokingly told me the voice on side 2 was that of the Devil himself. Bloody terrified me. It's one of my favourite albums now, excellent bass lines abound!
 11. John Deacon John Entwistle John Wetton Geezer Butler Dave Hope Bill MacCormick Colin Hodgkinson Burke Shelley Plus loads more I can't think of at the minute...
 12.
EDIT: the bass on the whole album sounds like a Precision with various effects like Chorus, Overdrive etc
I think we need to ask JDB!
 13.
Does anyone prefer the USA mix?
No way! It made for an interesting comparison but the spiky, brittle mix of the original was utterly perfect. It's funny but the band themselves have always maintained that the US mix was far closer to how the originally wanted the album to sound.
 14.
P bass and James did the bass.
I wouldn't be surprised if JDB played the parts on record. But I can't believe it's a Precision!
 15. I've always concluded it was the Rickenbacker, running in stereo. I think the clearest you can hear the tone unaltered by any effects is toward the end of '4st 7Ib', he plays a nice little descending run between verses, sounds too growly to be a Precision. Incidentally, The Holy Bible is one of my favourite albums ever, and the bass lines and tones are just monstrous.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAJWtEIcDeo&feature=feedu Sounds pretty damn good. Looks discustingly pretentious IMO What do you guys think of it?
That's a very extreme reaction to a humble Precision bass...
 17. A few months back, a mate tipped me off that there was a BC Rich Ironbird bass (don't laugh) hanigng in my local CC. I hopped over ther to have a look, they wanted a very reasonable £90 for it. The neck was very curved so I enquired about the returns policy, the guy just looked a bit panicked and said I could have it for £50. So I bought it. Got it home and found out the only reason the neck was so bent was because they had tuned it far too high - it settled back down and its now fine. So they don't always know what they have!
 18.
I thought I'd post a quick note to say I was lucky enough to meet Michael Henderson in Blackpool at the weekend, and got to play a little on a bass made for him by Jim Fleetwood. It's a beautiful instrument he's called The Starship bass. I think it's wonderful that Jim paid this tribute to MH - he's simply one of the most important bassists ever and it's about time he had a signature bass. Most of his recorded work was with a Jazz bass, but the Starship has a J/M pickup set up. I'll try to get a few pictures and post eventually, but heads up, the Starship is landing in 2011.
Apologies for my ignorance, but who is Michael Henderson?
 19. Have they reversed the arrangement of the whole pickup, or just moved the DG side and left the EA where it always was? Hope this makes sense!
 20. I've used nothing else for over ten years. I love the sound but agree they do die out pretty quickly. I've only ever had a couple of problems over the years - a few months back I had an iffy A string, emailed Rotosound and they promptly sent out a whole new set - didn't want the old string, receipt or anything. I was pleased. I often wonder if I should try some other strings out, I sometimes fell I might be missing out on something.
 21.
I have been very disappointed with the TonePump. The signal is so hot that it is always distorted. It is really a shame that Spector would sell equipment at the Euro pricepoint ($2k+) and not even know how the gear works. The Euro 5LX plays like a wet dream but sounds like crap. I have been setting the bass and treble flat and running the volumes at 2.5/10 and I get a flabby distorted tone. Looks like its time for a ToneDump unless someone else has some suggestions...
Have you adjusted the preamp gain? If you open the back panel you will see a little white dial on the preamp - it tends to be on full when they leave the factory (I think) but you can easily turn it down with a flat screwdriver. When they are turned up full the output is a little bit much.
 22. ^^^ For some reason the word 's-w-a-n-k-y' is considered flammable... Good job I don't live in Scunthorpe.
 23.
"Fixed" Fender Deville died at a recording session in the studio. Had to borrow a Hughes and Kettner Warp 7 amp to record. I've never sounded so pants on record
A mate of mine used to play through a Warp 7 amp and cab. You have my deepest sympathies. My only onstage gear mishap was at a gig in Alton, about halfway through the set my amp started getting quieter and quieter... Turns out the valve was dying. Luckily it's just in the preamp so I switched to the 'clean' setting and the guts returned (if a little pristine and sparkly for me)! Did the job though, and I can't imagine anyone in the crowd could give a monkeys. I have studio tale of woe - I used to play through an old Marshall Superbass, the 100w all-valve beasts. Went to record my bass parts and within seconds of turning the amp on it was smoking. not good. Luckily this was quite a sw***y studio and they had a sophisticated amp modelling thing going on, so I went through this and ended up with a far better sound in the end. if you are worried about the Marshall, it was later serviced and all was fine.
 24.
There is no waiting for someone to answer the phone by someone who may be busy dealing with someone who could actually get into the shop. Pet peev of mine from doing counter sales where the boss wants you to ignore the person who has actually bothered to come in for someone on the phone to me it's akin to queue jumping and extremely ignorant t the person standing there waiting or maybe already being served and I hate doing it.
+1 to this. I briefly worked for Zavvi a few years back, and refused to answer the phone if I had customers waiting. Infuriated the bosses, that did. Their fault for putting me in the computer games section when I specifically requested otherwise. But I digress.
