1. Wow I didn't realise my idea of going to a shop was such a divisive subject! For what it's worth, I do sometimes succumb to buying some things online (accessories mainly), but always prefer to make big purchases in a store, for the pre- and after- sales service. And also small purchases like picks and strings, because what's 50p difference, especially if you've enjoyed a browse and play on some instruments. Great if you're always stocked up but when you break a string or snap your last pick on the day of a gig, the internet's not going to help you! Bass Gallery and Wunjo are both fairly near to me so I'll have a look in both, thanks for the suggestions.
 2. Where's the best place to go amp shopping in London?
 3. Is the combo still available anywhere? Is anyone looking to sell theirs?
 4. Based in Oxford but regularly in London so either would work. No metal.
 5. Head: Hartke HA5500 (8 Ohms 330 Watts, 4 Ohms 500 Watts) Cab: Hartke 410XL (8 Ohms, 400 Watts) In perfect working order, I'm only selling as I no longer have a lock-up and don't have room to store them. £500 Pick-up in person from OX4.
 6.
Remember that the RedSub is "only" 250W in the combo because of the 8 ohm speaker, if you want the 500W you have to plug in an 8 ohm extension cab or take the head out and use it with a 4 ohm cab (or pair of 8 ohm cabs).
Thanks! I hadn't looked far into it but you've helpfully pointed that out before I do. Much appreciated.
 7. Thanks for all the recommendations so far. I'm being swayed towards the 'cube' amps, the size of these certainly takes precedence over 'smallish' amps (but thank you for those suggestions too).

Roland Cube - Is 120W the most powerful? Is that enough?
RedSub BT5110 500W - This would be perfect if it's not too good to be true.
AER Amp One 200W - I think I'd be spoiling myself spending that much.
8. Thanks for the quick responses, basschat is always reliable Roland Cube looks good, certainly is small. Yes to PA support. Looking to spend £200-400, a second hand bargain if I can find one. The smaller the better because physical space is at a premium in both transport and storage.
 9. I need a bass amp to use on stage that's small in size as I have limited space in transport and storage.

What specs should I be looking for? (I don't want to end up with something only suitable for home use, which is my fear. I need something small but with enough power.)
Any particular brands/amps you'd recommend?
I've kept my questions to the point as I'm sure this isn't the most new and interesting topic for most I'm a fairly novice bass player and not a tech head at all, but my band is playing mid-size gigs and small festivals so I need something half decent. Thank you for any advice you can give me.
 10. Huge sound on stage. £475, I'll also listen to offers for them separately. Pick-up in person from Oxford OX4 or other arrangement.
 11. Thank you for your help, everyone! I ended up going for a Hartke 410XL 400 watts, £102 on ebay (+fuel to collect it). I found browsing through second hand listings quite a difficult process - restricted by distance (which on this forum for example isn't explicit in the ad title) and ad titles not always descriptive of the item's basic specs (probably not an issue for those who know what they're doing!) - but I got there in the end! I'll let you know how I get on when I've got the gear set up. Thanks again.
 12. I've just bought my first ever bass and had a search on ebay for any amps being sold locally. Found the Hartke 5500 amp head, read only good things about it in review, and managed to get it for £205 (good deal?) Now I need your advice please to be absolutely sure I buy a cabinet that correctly matches it. The head is 500 Watts of power at 4 ohms. What specification do I need to look for in a cab? And are there any in particular you would recommend? It's my intention to become a gigging bassist so it needs to be something that can be used on stage. Thanks, Andy
