  1. Same here…… I guess that included a lot it radio on in the background, music in films etc….. but even so still a lot.
  2. True, but I’m more amused by “there’s only two types of music, good and bad”
  3. Went over my head too. As did Hellzero's joke-explaining reaction. Took Teeb's in-depth breakdown to bring me up to speed.
  4. Just remember the old bass players adage: If you like a zing - fits new strings. If you like it mellow - leave them, fellow ! (Ok I might have made that up!)
  5. It sucks for sure to be replaced, not a nice feeling. I think they just got in early enough that you were still on trial rather than a full member so hopefully that will help you feel less aggrieved. Pity you sank a lot of time into learning but on the plus side you got some new experience. Good luck with the next one!
  6. Yes Mackie is great but won’t help with protecting the neighbours from your sax😐
  7. Just don’t use it on your Ernie Balls😉
  8. I'm undergoing some culture shock in this area. My old band (now on long term hiatus after two members left) used to practice regularly and it was expected to turn up having only semi-learned the song. We'd fix the rest in practice room, sometimes could take a while. It didn't help that 3 of us sang both lead and backing vocals and with two guitars we never knew in advance who would do which vocal part or guitar part. That was worked out in the practice room. My new band which I joined just before lockdown and is now re-activating have only occasional rehearsals. We had one 4 hour rehearsal before lockdown at the end of which the BL said "see you at the first gig"! ( but there were no gigs due to covid) Big change for me. So we all learn our stuff at home and polish up in a single session. It helps that its one vocalist (me), one guitar (BL), one bass and one drums. Both bands are punk and new wave covers.
  9. Apologies for ignorance 😃 but what are rack ears?
  10. Good point well made.
  11. True for many, but there are some bands who are tight by gigging so don't need rehearsals to get tight. (Note: I have never been part of such a band!). I think they just learn new songs individually, quick run through at an occasional rehearsal and they're good to go.
  12. I normal don’t drag anything but choose “add files” then “photo library”
  13. Bit strange… pity they couldn’t reunite while Andy was still with us 🙁
  14. This came up on one of my FB groups from 1982 features Michael Stipe’s sister on bass and vocals , they are called Oh-OK
  15. Yes ^^^^, would like to hear what happened in the end🤞. I do have a bass drum pedal but I’m nowhere near Bridgenorth though! Don’t sack the drummer though, we need to look after our drummers even when they F up a bit! Our drummer forgot his snare at one gig and luckily there was someone in his family who could bring it down in time.
  16. Dub special of the listener-led "now playing" show - with guest Dennis Bovell - on 6music tomorrow:
  17. I don't really know anything the topic in general...... but I have seen a couple of times people using a keyboard to play brass parts and also blowing into a breath controller to get the expression. Might be worth looking at, depending how far you want to go of course.
  18. Yeah, I’d probably give that a miss….. wouldn’t mind having a go at a bit of gospel though 👍
  19. Phew that’s a lot! Out interest what kind of songs were they?
  20. Long answer: I don't believe that certain pitches sound better - it's just a myth. The only important thing is that everybody keeps to the same pitch.... which is why the standard exists. The specific pitch of the standard is arbitrary and doesn't matter. It seems that the standard has changed over time though.... don't know why that is, but I reckon it wasn't right or wrong at any of them.
  21. It helps with the singing too probably to keep a consistent reference pitch for the whole set. And good luck re-tuning the flute, piano etc !
  22. Short answer - play them in 440
  23. Some genres work well or even better with a drum machine. Apart from that a drum machine is a poor substitute for a real drummer in my experience. However I believe Beatbuddy is based on recordings of a real drummer and gets good comments on BC.
  24. Acoustic Guitar Chat: Non acoustic guitar players shouldn’t play acoustic 😃
  25. The two biggest camps in bass would be fretted and fretless IMO. But for the genres you mention (and indeed most) no need for fretless.
