  1. I’m about to buy a new PC for my home music recording….. what spec will you go for? Laptop or desktop? If you don’t mind me asking of course!
  2. I use Studio One , have seen a few of his videos and agree that he’s pretty good. However the kind of stuff I need to improve is not DAW specific, more the general guidelines to follow to get a good sound etc.
  3. I wasn't laughing 😉
  4. My personal enjoyment of bass solos can be encapsulated in the following: If I were to list my top 10 gigs I ever went to it would most likely include The Magic Band in 2002. If I were to list my bottom 10 gig moments it would most likely include Rockette Morton's bass solo from the same gig.
  5. I think a bit of unconditional love is OK at the beginning, and after all turning up is a very good start. If the band are no good you can always boo, throw bottles of wee or write strongly worded complaint later.
  6. Bass solos generally aren't great. If I had to do one I'd like to have the following rules I'm not on my own. The drummer continues, maybe with a stripped down beat. Maybe the odd chord from someone else. It's short - maybe 8 bars as suggested by others. The bass keeps the main feel of the song going, playing a variation of the actual bassline - either stripping it back or adding embellishment as appropriate.
  7. No problem with that, as long as you unclip it when you are not tuning up 😉
  8. Can imagine that sounding good with that genre of music. The recorder gets a bad rep due to the shrill poor tone we heard as school children. If your partner could suggest a good folk or folk-rock tenor recorder song I’d be interested to give it a listen.
  9. That's good advice for effect-y stuff. The flip-side of that is "always on" pedals if it forms parts of your core tone - like boost pedal to drive you amp, distortion pedal, thumpinator, Compressor and the like.
  10. You need to be different- a USP if you will.
  11. If ever there was a candidate for a universally applicable comment to recap any thread 😃!
  12. It also underlines the point of this thread….. even though she did that without agreeing it with the rest of the band, they didn’t complain on stage… or even give her a funny look.
  13. Wilko Johnson: Pedals? I’m playing guitar, not driving a car.
  14. Classic picture of it’s time, the man plays the guitar while two women look on adoringly 🙄
  15. Not sure if it’s a common practice, and does not directly answer the OP, but it’s related so I’ll mention it anyway. We played a gig at a local pub where the band got a flat fee regardless of takings plus a percentage of takings over a certain amount. I can’t remember the numbers though. I do remember that we got the flat fee only!
  16. Only available to some IP addresses.
  17. Like the bass drum ! What does it sound like and do you use it when there is no space constraint?
  18. Seems to have been pretty organised. She did well to apparently keep it secret from the rest of the band.
  19. Quite. This is the "Other Instruments" section. We can talk about any instrument here, no need to link it back to bass.
  20. Might be extenuating circumstances 😃 (on Edit: I mean that might the extenuating circumstances to cause you to say that)
  21. I've benefited from loans a few times... for example I went to the US with work, and went to an Americana/roots thing with a few open-mic spots in the interval. I went the the desk t pay and said I'd be interested in the open mic but didn't have a guitar. Without a beat one of the guys said "I'll lend you mine". Happy to pay it forward. In general I'm happy to help out another musician. If there are a few @rseholes out there who will take advantage of that then so be it. Most people are OK. And it's simply not in my nature to give the "if I can borrow your wife/car etc" type of answer. Just the way I am and not about to change.
  22. A new indie band called Porridge Radio (OK I'm not sure about the name either 😃) - Jan 20th - rescheduled from pre-covid. Not sure I can wait that long for next gig...might have to look for one before then.
  23. I went to see Robyn Hitchcock recently and the support act was Jessica Lee Morgan. She mentioned ("I like to name drop"!)that she was the daughter of Tony Visconti and folk singer Mary Hopkin. Her set was OK, but unfortunately nothing to suggest that he's inherited much from her parents.
  24. Reminded of this more recent group as they were chosen by Idles (normally it's a listener who choses) for the "Trunk of Punk" feature on 6 music yesterday. I think they are supporting Idles on the tour too. Sounded a bit post punk to me. The other two they chose were Discharge and Crass. Big Joanie - Baby Rust
  25. Bit surprised to be right about that to be honest😉
