Does the small chrome plate on the back hide the truss rod adjuster (wheel)?

A luthier's experience with tonewoods

Now make all the pieces the same size and repeat your 'experiment'... you'll then hear pitch change with density. And have made a funky marimba 😉 -
Round about '79 or '80 I started using Superwounds (the ones with the bare core wire over the bridge, like piano strings) on the Stingray, and really liked them.

If it's only a wee bit out then chop the spring in half - that'll get you an extra wee bit of range.

I was after a new Precision in 1980 and remember the price at £350. I eventually got a new '79 Musicman Stingray for £375.00 in Buzz Music, Hereford.

A luthier's experience with tonewoods

Yup, pickup position and type are a major factor in how a bass sounds. -
First confirm the truss rod is bust - if could have just been excess glue breaking away. Is it a separate fretboard? If so it would be worth trying to steam it off to get at the truss rod - if the neck is knackered you have nothing to lose and can have a bit of fun trying a truss rod replacement.... Taking it to a pro luthier would be too expensive - worth looking for a s/h Squire neck... i.e. Fender Squire Vintage 70s Modified Jazz Bass Neck | eBay NEW Fender Lic Allparts Jazz Bass NECK Maple Unfinished 10" Radius 20 Fret JMO - The STRATosphere (stratosphereparts.com) or equivalent.

Meh, that's just Conventional rock 😉 -
Yes, BrightOnion are a good choice. I'm running a Dual AB Looper with Tuner Mute and it works just fine.

"It's nice if it lines up, but it rarely does with any real precision." It's not just Precisions, real or not... 😉 Have a look at the MM Old Smoothie - 5 pole pickup with 4 strings.

Bone is very good, camel bone is super hard. Synthetic bone / Micarta is very good. Plastic can be truly awful, through adequate to excellent (melamine and Tusq). Synthetic bone is the safe option...

Valve Amp Random Crackles and Pops...
Bigguy2017 replied to binky_bass's topic in Repairs and Technical
Pull out the valves and reseat them. Tap the preamp valves with a chopstick and check for ringing / microphony. -
What kind of sound are you after and what kind of tension do you like? Sustain is not really a string thing, more down to the bass - check all the neck, bridge and tuner screws are nipped up tight... 😉 Strings for shorties vary a lot - more so than on long scales.

1. Look along the neck - compare it to the super straight string. Is it straight or a little bowed. Ideally you want a tiny bit of forward bow (relief). 2. String height - a good starting point is to slide a 10p piece under the strings, on top of the 12th fret - it should just catch on the string... Adjust bridge saddles to suit. 3. Now have a look at the bridge saddles - are they fully down on the plate or way high with the screws maxed out? Ideal is about half way through their adjustment range. If way out the neck angle is wrong. 4. Nut height - this may be your problem. Fret each string at the 3rd fret and slide a strip of paper (standard copier paper) between 1st fret and string - it should just fit - more than a double thickness or less than the single paper is a problem. 5. Check for high/low frets - a straight edge or fret rocker is needed here. To fix 1 requires a truss rod adjustment - with the correct size tool, a newish instrument (and some common sense) this can be attempted - should only take a quarter/half turn. Otherwise requires a visit to a bass tech... To fix 3 requires a shim in the neck pocket. To fix 4 & 5 requires a visit to a bass tech and either a replacement nut or some filing.

Have these Lockdowns improved your bass playing?

I'm playing bass or guitar, for one to two hours most days. The most practicing I've ever done. -
There's this (somewhat dubious) article MyVolts 14V DC power cable compatible with Creative D200 Bluetooth speaker - UK plug: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories 14VDC 2A - doesn't show if it's centre hot or not, or what size DC connector - might be work asking...

Most of my basses get a quarter turn on the truss rod, sometime in spring and autumn, as the weather changes...

Check you are going into an XLR line input and not an XLR mic input - it may be switchable.
