Yes, this. I recently got a Squier Tele (Affinity, the cheapest) which turned out to have loads of lifted frets. I've tapped them down gently with a hammer and some softish wood to protect the fret (strings off) and using a hammer and acetate handled screwdriver for some spot fixes just sliding the strings aside.

Hohner Jack knurled Tuning knobs!!
MoonBassAlpha replied to dodgnofski's topic in Repairs and Technical
What's the exact problem here? Are they missing or just slipping and not holding tune? I can help with the latter. Cheers Jules -
Bill Nelson swapped his 335 for a Woolies Audition semi to set fire to on the "sunburst finish" tour. Even the "axe" on the album cover isn't a Gibbo, but the naked girl was a good distraction tactic...
I too will never let anyone use my gear as i had the same thing as the OP when we supported Wilco Johnson at Fibbers in York a few years ago. I explained to a certain mr Norman Watt Roy that the head put out more power than the cab could take so be careful ! When we packed our gear down after the gig i noticed that both gain & master volume were both up full ! Speaker shagged i had to pay for the repair cheers Norman
Ha, that's interesting, we supported Wilko years ago in some pub in Kenton and I cheekily asked Mr Watt-Roy if I might use his big Trace Rig, and he politely said no. I didn't expect him to, but it was worth a try!

I wonder if putting a couple of small washers behind the ball on the strings to move the worn part of the string off the fret would make a difference? might be worth an experiment?

Just looked on the G-S website, prices from £1425!
Only gripe is that it seems to be wearing through where the speakon connector is - this could be down to me sliding it on its back into the car.
Yeah, that would do it with pretty much any soft cover...

Rough saddle height screws, any solutions?
MoonBassAlpha replied to neilb's topic in Repairs and Technical
I would shim the neck. I've just done this on my guitarists Telecaster when I installed GraphTech Saddles which had longer screws. A couple of thin card strips at the bridge end of the neck pocket worked an absolute treat. -
Advice on Steinberger / Hohner drop tuner bridge
MoonBassAlpha replied to lownote's topic in Repairs and Technical
Can you pop up a decent picture of the rest of the bridge, some clever bugger on here is bound to be able to work it out. I assume it worked ok before disassembly? -
NIce! Mine is serial 6812. The Purplewood fingerboard is fabulous and no longer offered. They are really well put togther basses. Still quite rare though!
They will be even more rare now US Masters has stopped building

This was shot at the Jericho Tavern in Oxford a couple of weeks ago. Was going to put it in the "fretless in rock?" thread. Last song in the set, sorry about the singing and the face.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUUn_5qNguo

Hohner B Bass Professional IV truss rod size?
MoonBassAlpha replied to lownote's topic in Repairs and Technical
If I recall correctly it is metric. 5mm sounds right. You could try putting a layer of pvc tape over the end of the loose hex key, might give it enough grip. -
looking at the state of those cabs you might do better selling pristine looking drivers.....

Here is an interesting article by Stuart Ward, respected amp designer and owner of the company that made Sessionette amps: http://www.award-session.com/pdfs/Why%20do%20many%20old%20guitars%20sound%20mellower%20than%20new%20ones.pdf Guitar related but the theory would translate to basses too. Controversial?

I played a Vintage reliced strat a while back, the frets could have been finished better, felt a bit scratchy.
I've never seen another bass (or guitar for that matter) by US Masters. http://www.usmasters.com/basses.htm I bought my Fretless EP53 from fellow a bass chatter. But they don't seem to have any sort of representation in the UK. It's a lovely bass and plays as well as Stingray 5 Fretless I had a few year ago, anyway here's a pic. So I guess this makes a rare beast
You mean like these? Early serial numbers, 61 and 101, though the Lacewood one has a replacement fretless neck, and the blue one now has the Lacewood's birdseye and Pau ferro neck. Both from BobPalt on here. Cheers Bob!

Band naming....when the name exists?
MoonBassAlpha replied to Salt on your Bass?'s topic in General Discussion
Grow a pair and be Original. It will prove worth it. -
I know just what you mean, but I don't agree, this doesn't sound like the run of the mill pop and will catch my ear for that. I'm easily distracted at work.....
I'd love to see a "Dirty Loops shreds" version of this btw
It would sound like me doing my best!
-
There's more going on harmonically than most "bland" pop, and the arrangement is quite stimulating, especially compared with stuff that really IS a bunch of loops. I found it interesting to listen to more than once. I think "bland" is a bit harsh in this context.

What new high-quality PA system for pub band?
MoonBassAlpha replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Amps and Cabs
[sub]This may sound overly simplistic, but I would just start by putting your existing Bose speakers either side of the stage in front of the mics, then you should be able to get more volume FOH without feeding back so readily. As I understand your problem, its feedback preventing you getting enough volume on the vox, not the PA running out of puff?[/sub] -
Frunt! Anybody remember them? I borrowed one before I got my Laney Linebacker.
I remember seeing an ad with them and Percy Jones. The amps had big metal heatsink/handles on the sides which I thought was a really good idea.
