1.
hi , the blue Patrick eggle you saw on e bay a few weeks ago , I bought it, wanted one for ten yrs, took the cover off to replace the battery, and the cables fell to bits im now waiting for all new pre amp to arrive, to fix it , , on close inspection someone had botched it up
Guitarist in an old band of mine has a red one. The preamp is a pain, it is epoxy potted and one on the wires fell off. PIA to fix.Seems like an afterthought, and not very well executed physically, but sounds ok. Also, no separate battery box so you have to take the scratch plate off to change, another drag. I liked it to play, though his has issues with the neck, I could only just get the relief right. I'm not keen on the single pickup in the middle, but it does sound very solid. Sperzel tuners are good, make sure all the locking thumbwheels are present! (though they are still good tuners without the locking bit) oh and def 34" scale!
2. How soon do programmes become available on i-player?
3. They still do the money back trial period thing, so you'd only be out the cost of postage if it didn't work out for you....
4. That lipstick looks great! the cool rails do seem popular for this. Personally, I thought the stock was ok.
5.
No-one who hasn't seen them live or on video would know that it wasn't a "guitarist" rather than a "bassist".
Yup, I was a bit surprised! Anyone got any idea what pedals are going on here? (My guitarist cant play lead for toffee....!)
6. It's the annual freaks charabanc trip from Oxford to the seaside. 4 bands, we are on at 7.30, playing the psyche/pop end of rock. The audience are as entertaining as the bands, often! Cheers MBA
7.
I've never had a problem with gig nerves in my life, I just absolutely hate gigging. I have absolutely no want, need or desire to provide entertainment for strangers, I hate all the hassle of loading in & out, I hate the hanging around for hours before playing & more than anything I hate the enforced pseudo-camaraderie that being in a band always entails. I love playing, writing & recording but gigging is, for me, just one big negative experience.
Try getting in a band where there's genuine camaraderie then...
8. +1 that will be it.
9. Well, I've done some tweaks, some suggested here (thanks chaps!) and by my guitarist, and I'm a lot happier now, and so is he: Thanks again for your opinions, it has really helped me on this one. I love this place! Cheers MBA
10.
Here you go. At one time it took pride of place in the lounge, you can just see it on the right... and here's the missus ably demonstrating it using pencils as drumsticks - It was a real 'hit' with the neighbours! Sadly it has now been relegated to the loft to make way for a dining table that we sit at once a year
That's amazing! that's the same finish as my Rogers kit, but yours is in SO much better condition! I'm only using the snare at the moment. Do you know what vintage it is? I'm guessing mine is early/mid 60s
11. I still haven't played around with it myself all that much, but I will say again that it seemed to work better on the distortion channel with single coil pickups. I only tried it briefly with a humbucker guitar (Eggle Berlin) and it did sound harmonically richer, but with a kind of wolf note on single note lead lines. Chords sounded quite lush though. I really need to try it out with a guitar I know better, as the Eggle is new ish to me. Still to try out my old SG with it. Also, beware the lead-time, mine was nearly 3 months away. I'm not gigging on guit, but make sure he's covered with a backup. Of course, lead time may be shorter now as the Blues Baby launch is now done.
12. Good job, they can be rightly proud of that!
13. The "lightness" of the bass end in my mixes was exactly one of the reasons I popped the mix up - I think my monitors are too upfront in the bass, leaving the mixes bass light. I guess it could be the room, it is almost cubic, only damped on 1 wall.
14. Thanks for your comments gents, it really is appreciated. To answer some points raised: I'm using a Zoom MRS 1688 (?) all-in-one jobbie, there IS some reverb on the snare and overheads, but I agree, it still sounds a bit dry. Only got the toms in the overheads, so it's hard to get them up without the (paiste) cymbals dominating. I think I went a bit too close on the Ride this time. I have done another mix, but now got the snare and backing vocals up too high, so I won't post that one yet! I also brought up the bass, and that does sound better. As the bassist, I'm reluctant to make the bass too upfront in the mix as it will sound "like it's been mixed by the bassist" if you know what I mean... Since I've got tinnitus, I'm finding my ears get fatigued more easily now, especially on distorted guitars and cymbals, have any of you chaps found this too?
15. Err, Alex already has his own logo, why would he want to put a knock-off Marshall alike on his gear?
16. I think I've got the cymbals a bit loud and maybe the snare too quiet, what do you guys think? Sorry it's a bit long, and a little proggy Damn, cant get the link to Dropbox working. I'll try Soundcloud tomorrow, too late tonight! I'm not really trusting my ears or my monitors at the moment. Comments welcomed Cheers MBA
17. Just sayin, the links without embedding the vid work great for me (and my cursed kindle HDX) Most of the time, I have no idea what you good folks are posting!
18. Pixies at Brixton Academy is one of my best ever gigs. I like going to jazz gigs as you are nearly always within a few feet of the players - no large screens required!
19. I think this is the most harmonious single-cut design ever. It just looks right, most others don't imho. Good luck with the sale.
20. Well, tried it out in practice last night, guitarist using only the clean channel. He LOVED it. He couldn't really articulate it very well but it was along the lines of "still really clean but much richer sounding". Get this - even our drummer noticed, and said it sounded really great. Shame we didn't get to the dirty channel, but he uses his Turbo Rat for that, and that always sounded good before anyhow... This exercise has got me even more interested in Award-Session's new product, the Blues Baby. It uses similar design principles and is sold as chassis only that fits into a Fender Blues Junior cabinet. See here http://www.award-session.com/bluesbaby.html I really don't need another guitar amp, but....
21. Well, if Didcot is nearer than Basingstoke to you, you're more than welcome to give it a bash. Anyone in Oxford on Sunday (23rd) can hear it at the Bully (now called the Art Bar) at 3pm, some kind of all-dayer, I think!
22. Blast! I would have paid £20 any day!
23. Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was a stripped out version with crappy converters or lower sampling rate or other stuff that would make it kinda rubbish. Might have a dip on a second hand one then.
24. Well it is back in it's cabinet and I've given it a go. Some of this won't mean much to people who don't know the Sessionette 75, but here goes: Clean channel In standard trim, the clean channel is ultra clean and quite glassy. Now it has more bass and more warmth and that slightly "pillowy" articulation that you get with a Fender Twin reverb. The new Presence control does quite a lot but is a bit of a pain as it is on the back in place of the old line-out volume control. More of a global flavour to just set and forget really. Distortion channel The standard distortion, I always found a bit scratchy, but quite usable in a band mix. Now it is smoother and more retro (for want of a better word) sounding, which is exactly the idea. This doesn't mean it is lacking in top-end at all, but it seems to respond really well to the guitar's tone control, and the distortion will clean up nicely as you reduce volume on the guitar, something most solid state amps don't do very well. It seems to me to like single coil pickups better than humbuckers, single notes sounding a bit sweeter. This may have a lot to do with the designer's love of Telecasters! The whole thing is more phat and less boxy than before, i found myself turning the bass down, I'd always run pretty flat before. I'll be interested to hear my guitarist through it at the next practice. He uses a Tele and a Turbo Rat for the noisier bits. It will be interesting to hear that combo through this combo. All in all a very interesting development that makes a lot of difference. It feels a lot more like my old Wem Dominator to play. I haven't tried it out with my SG yet though - that would be the best comparison, as it was what I used when I was gigging on guitar (13 years ago) Any local valve fans are welcome to try it out! Cheers Jules
