In my experience, strings fracture at the machine head end when taken off a couple of times, not surprising at all. I don't think I ever had this with repeated boilings with double ball-end strings.
Also, I'd try to use a proper pillar drill rather than a hand drill, as the holes are more likely to end up in a straight line on the back of the bass.

LOL. I am used to listening to gigs and appreciate that the best ones have a clarity to the sound where the air isn't filled with noise ALL the time.
They're talking about filming a rehearsal. So it will be interesting to watch it back.

ooh yeah! post it up here for critique by the good folks of BassChat!
Used to see it years ago, in places where the audience got in for nowt. Not seen this for years, but I think it's a really nice idea, if you've had a really great time. Show a little extra appreciation, after all, it's not mandatory, like door fees.

Miidgets need a LOT of watts.well my new super midget does...
I recently got a super midget so i could go to rehearsals in my GT86! What an extravagence.
My GB Shuttle9.2 has to be cranked much higher to get the volume I get from my S12T.
I fear if i'd had anything with fewer watts than the 9.2 (500W @ 8ohm) then the super midget would not achieve required volume

Interesting comments Ian, but what does it sound like at required volume? Does it do the job?
Yeah, I pretty much told the guy this, but I think he has his heart set on a new rig now, one of the TC amps with the "free" speaker add on deal. The power of GAS!
One that sticks in my mind is ELP on Karn Evil 9 (first impression) at 3 minutes in, where Carl Palmer gets a bit excited in a drum breakdown and speeds up, then it all crunches back in to time when L and E come back in. Didn't they listen back to it and think eew?
Old Barefaced Midgets fit the bill. Might see some coming up used now the new range of barefaced is out. They are definitely mid focussed, though you can eq bass in if needed without farting out.
Ah, ok then, I might suggest that it's only the cab he needs to change then.
It seems that all 15s are not equal then, there's a lot more high mids on my Compact than that Ampeg, that's for sure...
Thanks for your input chaps.
Hi All
last night I used the bass rig from our drummers other band as we were on the same bill.
I'm not sure what the cab configuration was, possibly 1x15 as It seemed a bit too small for a 4x10.
It sounded plenty loud in the bass (almost too much) but however I set the amp, there was just no top end at all.
The amp was an Ashdown LG1000 with the treble right up, and I also tweaked the treble right up on my MXR Bass DI+. Just made NO Difference. It sounded like the cab was lowpassed at about 2khz max.
Any suggestions? Do some Ampeg cabs have mid crossover that could have failed, or something.
The guy said he was looking to get a new rig because of this issue.
Cheers
Only just spotted this thread, but as someone else pointed out, the brown thing isn't a cap, it is either a varistor or thermally resettable fuse. If this has been added by a third party, it may not have been correctly rated.
Not sure about the blue one either. Doesn't look like the normal fare for a crossover. The PTC on it may be positive temperature coefficient, i.e. another protection component

I saw the MP11 referred to above...I am a proud owner of one! Amazing bit of kit, although I think technically it's more of a graphic eq than a pre-amp. I'd love to see this incorporated into a new class-D unit.

Like an Ashdown Superfly?
Is it just me, or is the headstock on the Graft range reminiscent of Kryten's head?

This is lovely, Nigel. And available on vinyl too!! I'm gonna order a copy.
Funnilly enough I saw a sitar player at a local gig this weekend. He was accompanied by a guy on 6 string bass. It was magical! I was thinking of starting a thread to see if anyone had any recommendations for sitar/Indian/fusion type music. But spookily enough, here was your thread just when I needed it, lol

Try "Indo Jazz Fusion" by John Mayer and Joe Harriot for a take from the 60s and Bada Boom by Ranjit Barot for more modern fusion.
Presumably not to be confused with the long-standing American band of the same name? :
