1. Now I have got batteries for my jigsaw again, I'm going to revisit my 10" cab idea. I was going to make it sealed this time (I think I got the porting a bit wrong last time!) I was going to use 12mm ply but only have (loads of) 6mm. I'm thinking of doubling it up glued together but perforating the inner layer with 1" holes to lighten, and provide anchor points for stiffening dowels if necessary. Speaker is Celestion bn200x, Thinking of making the cab taller than the previous trapezoid shape. I seem to remember the volume needed to be about 1 square foot, is this right? or different for sealed? I have no real woodworking tools, so fancy joints are out-ish, but thought the 2 layer walls would open up the option of simple mortice & tenon joints. Might incorporate a handle/Shuttle 3.0 holder again too. Can you see any problems with the ideas here? Cheers MBA (Jules)
2. Poke the last bit of the cable through the cab handle to take the stress off the amp's input socket
3. Couple of funny incidents at our gig last night. At load-in the bass player with the first band asked me if he could borrow my amp, there was no prior arrangement about any gear share, so I asked if he had brought his amp: "I wasn't sure if I needed to, so I didn't" which I thought was mind boggling and hilarious at the same time! After saying no just to see the look on his face, I let him as they were up first, and I had sold him a fretless a while ago. The chap from the top band asked the same, but this time I politely declined, as 1) I'd never met him before and 2) I really wanted to go after I'd played. Fortunately, he had got his gear in the van, but he still seemed to have the hump about it...
4.
Custom sizes also available
Read "I've bought a Stanley knife"!
5.
[pedant] No, this will give the volume. The weight will depend on the specific gravity of the bass and its components. A hollow bass will displace the same volume as a solid, but will weigh less (typically...). [/pedant]
Wrong. The bass will float and the weight of the water displaced will equal the weight of the bass.
6. This probably depends on the overall level-ness of the frets. As you reduce the relief any higher ones will become more noticeable.
7. Who is going to be the first to ask about the weight of this?
8. My friend Phil has nabbed this. To quote: "I'm in love with fretless again"!
9. Sounds like a dry joint somewhere. I'd look for large components like caps and power transistors, big resistors etc. and reflow the joints.
10. Resale value isn't the slightest consideration, my 18th birthday present will not be sold!
11. Hi all I am a great fan of satinizing (if that's a word) necks with Scotchbrite fine scourer but have only done it on poly finished ones, not nitrocellulose. It's a '74 SG, and I have no desire make a pigs ear of it. Anyone done this with success? Comments gratefully received. Cheers MBA
12. Search ebay for 2sa1837 for uk seller. Cheap as chips!
13. Speculum, as a band name, says it all really!
14.
I played fretless exclusively for about 7 years but as the taste for it dropped do did my need for it and I haven't owned one for some time. However the band I play in just got a new guitarist who just happens to own a Wal mk1 lined fretless and he brought it along for me to play a few days ago.
That's one cool guitarist you got there!
15. I saw a young pop-metal type band using new Trace gear in a large rugby social club function room. It sounded really good and so loud I had to go outside. The PA was vocals only... I don't know what their most powerful head is but that MUST have been it!
16. Bright blue leds are quite bad for your eyes. \sorry for the buzzkill but green, yellow, reds etc are kinder on yer glasballs
17. I think most folks just man up
18. The sound, especially in the first half was very poor, boomy and quite chaotic sounding. As above, the bass had little definition. As it went on,the sound got a bit better, and the quieter passages were really nice. I would have loved it to be in a smaller venue where they weren't trying to do a big rock show, as this is groovy, subtle music, and in this particular venue, these things were lost a fair bit of the time. The highlights were still good, but on the whole, I was left a bit disappointed. For loud music, Cheltenham Town Hall really needs some acoustic treatment, imho.
19. I'd kind of expect to apply a bit of elbow grease to something I'd picked up SO cheap. Sounds like a good score for a bass with nothing ACTUALLY wrong with it at all!
20. I'd be interested to hear what others thought of the sound at Cheltenham last night.
21. I'd check the underside of the circuit board and see if any of the solder joints to the larger components has fractured. These will be the parts most likely to vibrate and break a join,or even a track. A rapid disconnect/reconnect at the output can cause the fuse to blow due to the inductive effect of the speakers. Often, a quick dab with a soldering iron is all that's needed.
22.
I properly hate fenders, so I'll be fine in that respect, credit card is being left behind and girlfriend is coming with me to keep me sensible lol
she might want to take a book!
