I'm fine thanks Bob. Hope retirement is suiting you well! In the end I did these myself: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/215382-luminlay-side-markers/page__fromsearch__1 Quite pleased with the results. Thanks all for the other suggestions - anyone know how the Rothko and Frost ones compare to Luminlay, they are loads cheaper, and their light is too?

I soundproofed the rear third of my garage. Just enough room for a 3-piece, leave all the stuff set up and a Flats drum kit. Barely any sound escapes.

I had ONE rehearsal with a loud drummer, near his crash. He was wearing earplugs, so I don't think he realised how loud he was playing. This ONE practice has given me tinnitus.

Ok chaps, pretty much all done. Tips I've found out on he way: Pilot drill the holes to full depth properly - 1mm drill is good Hand held pcb drill will drill slightly oversize. Using a pin chuck might have more control Push rod into hole, hold sharp blade along neck and rotate rod to score all round almost flush to neck. This gives a cleaner break with less waste, so less filing later. The picture attached is before I tried this! I used the insulation tape to pull the rod out of the hole, added a spot of superglue to the end and re-inserted. Easy, but have some kitchen roll handy to wick off any excess - less finishing later. Drill hole in insulating tape to put over rod for initial filiing flush, I used 600grit paper to go flush then buffed with a nail buffing board to finish All in all I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. They are plenty bright when first charged. It's pretty hard to take meaningful pictures in operation:

If the nut is cut wrong, and the string is "fretting" at the back end rather than the front, the lower frets will appear sharp if the intonation is set correctly at the 12th. More likely the nut is too high though, as Mr Foxen suggested.

What diameter rod did you go for? I went for the 2mm (smallest) as it is what the original markers were. I daresay the 2.5 or 3mm ones show up better, hope the small ones are fit for purpose.

I cant speak for the Cube 20xl but the Cube 30 was very good at all those things you require.

The Luminlay has arrived, 10 days on the button, exactly as stated, from order (posted from Japan) Something to do this weekend now if the weather is rubbish! I will be using a small hand pcb drill. I've already marked and piloted the holes with a 1mm drill. I'll do a couple of test holes first on some scrap before I get to the neck for real.

speeding up ageing of roundwounds?
MoonBassAlpha replied to tedmanzie's topic in Repairs and Technical
Get my guitarist to play them, his sweat is toxic to strings. -
I think you are on the right lines here, may be some protection cutting in. Using the compressor to knock the peaks off may well be the answer. I've got a little Spirit powered mixer that does just this if it gets overloaded.

Another Sessionette 4x10 here too. Did me for years, only just loud enough though for the band I was in at the time, but not too heavy either. They've got a very quiet preamp and might be good in to a class d power amp. Before that was a Roland Bass Cube 60.Not loud enough for a rock band even with an EV speaker. I ran it together with a Sessionette guitar amp on top and together did the job.
chewing up the fretboard, for one
My US Masters fretless has been my main gigging and practicing bass for 6 years, only ever with rounds, and there is no wear that affects the sound at all. There are the fine lines across the board which appeared straight away but have hardly changed in the interim. The board is Pau Ferro (don't know if this is meant to be harder than rosewood) and has a satin sheen similar to the neck itself, so it probably is some sort of treatment. If so, it clearly works!. My defretted Hohner Jack had an untreated rosewood board, and I would never describe that as chewed up either. I think this is a bit of a myth, or certainly overstated, in my experience. Anyone else had the polar opposite?

ok then, no takers. I've ordered some (from Japan) and I'll give it a go myself. I might even take a couple of pictures as I'm doing it if anyone is interested.

Hmm... interesting use of microtones on the bass line.
I know it's not a fender, but I'm gonna suggest you have a look at a Peavey T-40
not exactly light in weight though?

can't think of a compelling reason not to use regular roundwound strings really.

placing a speaker in a corner is generally reckoned to boost the bass....
This is my Shergold fretless 6 String Marathon one of only four ever made two of which are now fretted!
I can't believe there were only 4 made. I had one and Andy Pask from Landscape reviewed one in Musicians Only Mag (I think..) back in the day. I converted mine to long scale and added a Gotoh soapbar humbucker at the bridge. Sold it to guy who came up from Bristol. Quite a sweet sounding bass.

Hi all I've copied this over from repairs and technical as ther is prob more traffic on this forum... I'm looking to get side markers fitted in a spare fretless neck, and also the original dots between the frets removed/covered. The neck was spare as it was a custom order and the markers were in the wrong place (between "frets") Can anyone recommend a luthier who will do the job for me? any help much appreciated. A decent and timely job more important than cost... Cheers Jules

Strings echo - has anyone else had this?
MoonBassAlpha replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
That sounds like the signal processing of a modeling amp. I think they all do it to some extent. The signal processing probably "gates" itself once it decides there is not enough signal to process anymore. I've certainly noticed similar on a Line6 Studio 110, can't remember about the cube, that was too long ago! -
Epi EB0 mod and rewire problem

1.4K seems very low for any pickup resistance. Sure it isn't 14K? -
