The amp is far more likely the source of that noise than the speakers.
Maybe but as said with a different cab it was totally fine. Although its a different ohm cab. Could they amp simple not like 4 ohm? I think the next step is to test the cab with another amp. I will see if someone local can borrow me one.

I have a peavey tvx 410 (4 ohm) it must be one of the first ones I think. Its old anyhow. I've removed the tweeter as I don't like them and the associated lp filter these have has been removed too. Its just straight to a jack now. It sounds alright I like the tone and seems to put out a fair amount of volume which I'm surprised as its not a modern efficient cab. However there is a noise kind of like a very very faint distortion or grainyness after the notes that you can hear mostly when directly in front of the cab, at other angles you can't hear it hardly or not at all. And in any mix its unnoticeable and in some ways its not unpleasant but I know its there and soon as I hear something that's it! lol. The cab seems solid enough and I've removed the grill. I've pressed on the drivers and I'm sure there's no coil rub. And I'm sure it's not any wires in there. The noise gets no worse turning up, it does get louder but stays the same level relative to the bass notes at all volumes, if you get my meaning. I've tried my amp with another cab and no issues, no distortion at all. Although it is an 8 ohm cab maybe the amp doesn't like the 4ohm peavey? (old mag 300). So I'm thinking maybe the drivers are just a bit tired? Any ideas, thoughts? The specs of the Sheffield drivers are not great at all, I'm thinking of changing them out. Maybe they don't like the extra highs they have to now deal with now the lp filter was removed.

Do the 600s have a traditional a/b power section or class D?

New embassy (and also thunderbird) bass, Classic style!
Twincam replied to tommorichards's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm not sure what you mean by this - I can think of very few basses with authentic Thunderbird-style pickups or tone. If you're referring to the Embassy, that is a reissue of a bass that used Thunderbird pickups as well, so it's authentic on that front.
They stick tbird pickups or alike pickups in everything. And fine if you like all your range to sound the same but in different shapes. I realise often basses have used the same pickups as another model and a reissue would possibly stick to that, but what's wrong with a little more variation on a theme. They literally have 4 basses with probably similar tone, bar the shape. Its to me like if p basses and j basses from fender only used jazz pickups or very similar in both models. I have no problem with Epiphone or Gibson. -
Has TE or Peavey not listened to what any bass players has been asking for them. I actually feel a bit annoyed. Its been clear as day (almost) what people wanted from TE. They could of even made that micro amp a tiny tiny miniature version of any of there past successful amps and people would of thought it was cool. But no instead they make some indistinct thing, which might be a half decent amp but its only notable feature is its tiny. But least the brand name isn't totally dead.

If it doesn't get the required volume on the amp then set the volume at whatever you like and use the volume pot on the bass to make any more adjustmemt if needed. To be honest I think you need a bit of volume to really sound as you should. Apparently you can here me play outside while sat in a car. But I'm not even that loud! Maybe you can work put a time your neighbours won't mind if you turn it up for half an hour or so.

New embassy (and also thunderbird) bass, Classic style!
Twincam replied to tommorichards's topic in Bass Guitars
Why are they putting those thunderbird style pickups on everything. They belong on a tbird I bet they are even in a similar space. I honestly wish some manufactures would give a little more variety from one bass to the other in terms of tone. -
Is there a reason for the apparent dislike for active basses...
Twincam replied to Rocker's topic in Bass Guitars
I never thought there was any dislike I'm not sure I've seen any particular distain for them. There are situations where either would maybe have an advantage or disadvantage in a situation. -
Taping them would be the simple way yes. But if taped use good proper insulation tape and absolutely use enough to make sure the connectors are well covered then tape and arrange the wire not to rattle.

Are they woolly? Only joking!

I think if your happy with your amp then as others suggest just a cab change to something with more kick might be a good option. A 4 ohm 2x12 or as already said maybe two separate 8 ohm 12s. You may find that just the cab change is enough of a change up and if its not then look into a new amp too.

I had an ag500. Was a very good amp not sure about legendary however, maybe a bit too mids forward for me and I felt it was slightly underpowered for its rating. I did like it though. The cabs I used it with were not the best admittedly. At the same time I also had a ashdown abm 500 and a te 200w combo. Both of which had more power it felt like, and more bottom end. So if the updated version has a bit more power and a tad more low end then it should be a fantastic amp. I hope it still retains some of the character of the original.
I think this is such an amazingly well put together peice of music. The album that it comes from is also superb. I love early Police like Sycronicity 2. Really fantastic music. But Ten Summoners Tales is just one of the greatest albums. Like him or not, his music is really good. Imo http://youtu.be/pG7_gceIFL4
My theme tune to asking a girl out when I was 19. Circa 2003. And I had a rival for her affection. He won. The mirror squeaked away I ran. Sunday was too late!. After that I never repeated that mistake and became bold in matters of the heart. But whenever I hear the song I think back to sitting in my first car, its snowing and desperately trying to work up the courage to ring her. And in the CD player was the very best of sting and the police.

Boring choice but black night and smoke on the water. I don't know the full deep purple catalogue admittedly. But imo those two songs have stood the test of time better than some of there other stuff. I'm not saying there better, I just think much of there work now sounds a tad dated dare I say. And who doesn't like playing black night, its one of those that is simple to play but totally satisfying when you really nail it with playing and tone.
Our guitarist uses a 20 watt valve combo and can still drown out the bass (and drums!). Maybe 15 watts is a sensible max for guitars?
I actually think 15w valve watts for guitar can cover an awful lot of ground. I had a wem dominator bass combo 15w which I replaced the driver for a modern full range job and did a few little mods to the circuit it made it better for bass. But used with guitar you could really crank it without the driver breaking up, and in a smallish space it was ear splitting loud.
Love my Trace Elliot gear, the weight I can live with, but I really wish the power button was on the front instead of the back... Love my Bass Collection Nanyos but I wish the input socket wasn't at such a daft angle on the side.. So what lets your gear down??
You could have the switch and jack socket located. Of course it would maybe effect resale value slightly but if done right and you really are going to keep the bass and amp then it might be worth looking into.

Have you tried changing the strings? Its unlikely to be the truss rod when playing a g string in one spot but not impossible. And if it is you could maybe give it a tighten. And because it just started then some times an old or even a new string after a certain amount of playing can develop a rattle that is noticeable on a certain note. The noise sounds like its coming from anywhere but the string. Often the string is just fatigued internally or at the kink on the bridge. You taken the string on and off it got better which leads me to believe it could just be down to the string. So you could try a new set of strings and a good setup.

Just as long as you remember you can't use an extension cab if fitting two 8ohm drivers. I used a couple of fanes before they are decent drivers. Big magnets on them they seem like a very controlled driver (in the right cab of course).

Power is cheaper than ever so why not. I'm also slightly dubious about some class d ratings. What I dislike is when a company charges significantly more for nearly the same amp with more watts. It will cost them more money here and there fair enough, but they whack the price right up. And if your lucky they throw in an extra knob or two if your lucky.

There's a vote and discussion going on in the recording section to see if we should keep or cull the noodle bar. With its falling participation numbers it would be nice to see if we can get a little more interest and keep it going. Maybe someone has ideas on rule changes or something. But if its to be culled then so be it. I tried to come up with something to get a little more interaction but if I have to fall on my bass then I shall lol. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/298244-basschat-noodle-bar-keep-or-cull/#entry3215559

I see the poll attracted all of three votes! Currently Haha. I'm obviously up for keeping it going. I still think it was a good idea with good intentions. I think the recording section as a whole doesn't get enough attention. As I've said on many an occasion the rules were so simple practically anyone could join in. And while I think the main composition challenge is very good my thinking was that some people don't have the equipment, knowledge or time to put together a full composition. So I thought the bare bones approach would attract some participation on the forum. Maybe people just think its aimless noodling, which sometimes it is but it can be a section/passage of a song, a riff etc. Some have entered there isolated bass from the composition challenge. I'm up for keeping it going as long as it gets some form of activity. You never know in 2017 it may become the next big thing haha. Just one more thing. Maybe it would make it more interesting if we allowed use of a looper?
I've had a very mixed experience with these cabs. I tried the 2x10 combo and 1x15 in Dawson's and they sounded great. Would of happily bought them there and then but I needed a 2x10 cab and not a combo.unfortunatley Dawson's would not be getting one in stock for over a month. Being impatient I went home and ordered the 2 cabs from GAk. On arrival the size and weight of the cabs ticked all the boxes for me. The problem started once I plugged them in. The 2x10 gave out the most horrendous farting/buzzing noise whenever I played an A note. The 1x 15 also buzzed but not as bad as the 2x10. I tried different amp heads, but the problem remained. I tried my Mark bass 1x15 and genz Benz 2x10 and there was not a hint of buzzing when I used my old cabs. This seemed to prove the fault lay with the Ashdown cabs, which were returned the next day to GAK and got a full refund as they had no replacements in stock. A few weeks latter I saw the same cabs in Rimmers Music and tried them out with TC BH500 amp head. The 2x10 cab had a faulty speakon connector and the 1x15 was buzzing and vibrating in the shop. The sales guy confirmed he could hear it too and it was local to the cab rather than something else in the store vibrating. Bottom line was I love the weight and size of these cabs but I have lost confidence in buying them now. Did try the Fender Rumble 1x15 combo with a 4x10 cab as a comparison and it sounded fantastic.
Many times the buzzing on ashdown cabs is down to that large metal ashdown double winged emblem. And it can be very audible! I've had a few ashdown cabs that had that issue. And heard it shops too. The older smaller single winged emblem never had the problem. On certain notes the emblem wing tips vibrate against the metal grill. Solution is to put thin rubber strip or a thin bit of electrical tape behind them. Some cabs already have this from factory but I've seen others that dont or its not located correctly. Ashdown really should fix this issue. In fact they should attach the emblem better in the first place. I've seen a couple of ashdown cabs new and old that didn't have the grill screwed down correctly too. Other than that Ashdown cabs I've found to be ok put together.

Fret buzz - Climate change? Add or remove relief?
Twincam replied to markdavid's topic in Repairs and Technical
In general if you get fretbuzz on frets 1-7 its down to needing a touch more relief. Assuming frets are level of course. And I would say your assumption about an atmosphere change is correct. Although sometimes frets can move also. -
Replacement bridge for heavy guage strings
Is it out of the question to just ream the hole out a bit?
My thoughts exactly. Either with a drill or if only minor adjustment a diamond coated file. -
Anybody use foam underneath an amp head? Like many I normally use trusty Halford's car dash non slip matting to keep a micro amp in place. I've noticed that my LM 800 seems to bounce a bit more than most (whadya mean turn it down ) Anyway, I got to thinking, long term, that amount of vibration can't do it much good. So, I'm thinking of getting some 1/8 inch foam and cutting it down to just more than the area covered by the feet of the head. Daft? Worrying about nowt? Thoughts folks? Cheers, Karl.
I've had a few amps which have rattled etc loudly enough to be very audible even at higher volumes. Sometimes its the feet but often its internally in the amp. So I now make a point of putting something under the amp. I don't care what anyone says but it will also help protect some elements of the amps circuitry (amp depending). Its amazing how much resonance etc a cab is making. Its bound to over time have the possibility of weakening solder and larger capacitors on older amps have been know to break lose from the leads at the boards and internally. Especially when adding a heat cycle to all that too. Obviously some amp designs are more "solid" than others in this regard.
