Funny enough I cleaned a dirty sr500 last week. For the body a damp cloth. Also a damp cloth works well on the neck, but on stubborn buildup its ok to use a small amount of lighter fluid or say methlated sprits. After cleaning with any harsh fluids its best to give it a rub down on the bare woods of the neck with an natural oil I use boiled linseed. The above suggests also sound good. Unfortunately nothing will stop the body finish coming away. Although you could lacquer the body or strip and stain it.
It's scented mineral oil from what I understand. It works fine... I've been using it for decades. Spot it on a cloth and wipe it on the fretboard. It may take a few applications, but leave it a while before reapplying. Once the fretboard retains the vibrant, freshly oiled look, stop. Easy as that.
Mineral oils smell nice and don't do a bad job. But boiled linseed oil gives a little more protection especially after its been treated a few times (sparingly) but it does smell a bit for the first few days. Too much of either oil is a bad thing though. Once or twice a year is sufficient. And lighter fluid is good to remove crap but I wouldn't use it too often. I hear jimmy Hendrix was once using it on stage to clean his guitar with disastrous results lol.

I have had similar issues in the past. From weight lifting mainly. I didn't have any feeling in my hands. Worst thing I did was carry on doing the same thing that caused it. Had to rest for a few months, no weights etc and did not even play any bass. After the rest I was fine and I started doing some light stretching before any activities that might annoy it. Also noticed light gauge or lower tension strings help also a lower action. That might help help a guitarist also. It sucks to rest properly but that's what the body needs. I doubt he will never ever play again.

Options to repair/disguise chip on headstock.
Twincam replied to scoot's topic in Repairs and Technical
To be honest if it was in there really tight that could of happened to anyone! Such is the nature of wood. Although maybe he could of been gentler? I mean even the very best luthiers come across bits of would that split or do other funny things when working them. But indeed it is his job to put it right. And although it will never be 100% his glue job looks rough. Options are asking him to re do it. Or paying someone to try sort it out. Doesn't Andyjr1515 of this forum do refinishing? You could always his opinion. -
They claim to make a lot of it themselves. Among the gear I bought the is the bass straight-edge with notches for the frets. Man, that thing is weighty! It must be 2.5mm steel or thicker.
I bought a straight edge from them that wasn't straight. Sent it back got it replaced and tbh I'm not 100% about the replacement! Other tools I've bought from them have been ok though. And have held up nicely with regular use.

I have just been listening to some isolated bass tracks. Any that have all the string, fret and finger noises in and then comparing them with full track or even my playing. They always makes me feel better about my playing tbh. But I've always wondered what is the exact science of a very noisy and sometimes sloppy bass track, that in the mix sounds great? Is it a case of certain frequencies being lost in the mix, but then the added frequencies of all the extra string noise etc helps it cut through? Or maybe the more noisy players are naturally using more mids? I would be interested in hearing examples of a very rounded clean bass tone in the mix and then the same mix but with a more mid sounding, rough and noisy bass track. Ha just a thought imagine a Chris Squire clanky low action tone on a Motown recording and then a Jamerson tone, high action, flats on a Yes track. Would they still sound as good?

So I've been using a traditional file for recrowning frets. I'm pretty proficient with it. I like being able to control exactly the shape of the crown. However I find its a bit of a pain to use on the higher frets with basses that have set or through necks, as I find the body of the instrument gets in the way. So been looking into getting one of those recrowning tools with a pre cut profile. But there's loads of them out there. Any recommendations? Any downsides to these type of tools?

I almost bought one of those, or the 2 pu version. However I like a really thin neck so was hesitant. Nice pics you taken btw the bass looks fantastic.
This happened to me too. I bought one in late 2015, but it has a 2012 serial. Furthermore it's in a colour which was only available for 2013. With Fender, the serial number only dates the neck; it doesn't tell you when the guitar was actually put together. It could have then spent a while at a distributor, and at the dealer before finally being sold. It's not concerned me at all. I think the value of any post 2012 American Standard would be based more on condition than age.
This is true however I've only seen neck 1 or maybe 2 years older than when it was assembled together. As they sometimes but not always have that info on the bottom of the neck I've noticed.

Does this bother you? If so I would ask for an actual new bass. As fair enough old stock etc but 2012 is a bit too much imo. I mean it could also effect its value if you chose to sell it on also.

Good tune. I know some have derided stings lyrics. But I have always enjoyed them and found them very apt. He seems to have a song for every emotion.

I think the jury is out on that one. Personally I would have just a little tension on it and have the neck straight or some relief. Bit its probably more important how you store the instrument.

So are we rebooting the noodle bar?

I don't think I've trully been happy with any bass I've owned. Oh actually there was one I loved how it played and sounded, the shape and weight was great. And aesthetically it ticked all the right boxes. Oh course I sold it! I envy people who can play any bass. I need certain things like a small/thin neck and a little and fairly lightweight body to be happy (I once told a gf that lol). I also get on with certain pu positions. This limits my choice.

Serveral times I've had to sell my only bass and a few times had to wait a few months before being able to buy another. And I really missed having one around and instantly felt better on being able to buy another bass. However there is another way sell your bass and use maybe a tiny amount to buy a cheap bass just to get you through. It can actually be fun to try find these cheap basses. Its not going to be anything flash just functional.
Public Image by Public Image Ltd springs to mind.
Great tune! Extra points to since Jah Wobble plays sitting down, keeping it extra simple lol. -
The Light Pours out of Me by Magazine. Quite a tricky one note riff in the verses.
I want to like that, but the guitar sounds like that Gary glitter tune and its just off putting. -
Spotted this old Cort. Probably will make a decent cheap bass, looks in not too bad a condition, just needs a good sprucing up. I think its pretty cool. But then again I nine years ago, also had a mk1 micra with brown interior that I thought was cool haha. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122406767689

Its not 50s imo. And I'm not sure about high quality, although it does have a certain look to it and I do kinda like it. Looks possibly like an obscure low volume brand that was run out of a shed at the bottom of the garden.

As said above some great mentions already. And some others I will have to check out. -
I was thinking there is some great simple baselines out there that while obviously solo don't sound like anything much but in song sound great. So just for fun what are the best but most simple bass lines? Extra points for the fewer the notes etc.
Last year I saw a Squier P Bass in a charity shop, it absolutely reeked of curry. Even for the asking price of 80 Euro, I would have to get it home, disassemble it, clean it and fit new strings. The smell put me off. One can only speculate on the standard of hygiene in the previous owners house/flat/bedsit.
Haha this made me laugh.
