1. After investigating it seems like the bass amp is pretty much the guitar 10w version with a few minor changes. So I did the led mod the same as the guitar version and it stopped the amp clipping as early. Then I hooked it up to an old cab the amp has a good amount of bass and character. I wonder if I can find some better 5 inch drivers to replace the originals that are pathetic
2.
You put bleach on the fretboard/neck of a bass. ??!!
Oh yeah! Zero bad effects so far too. I will say that this was a old bass and not worth much and it had a ski jump in the neck anyhow. I wouldn't do it on any bass but then again the stink from the fretboard was extreme! And I had tried everything else. The wood came up really nice after being re oiled.
3.
Clearly I've been mistaken - I assumed that Twincam was talking about one of the guitar amps, but I was oblivious to the bass amp that Meddle describes above! I'm with you there: why put two pokey 5" drivers in when you'd probably do better to use a decent 10"? Particularly as I don't imagine Vox go to the same lengths as Phil Jones when it comes to designing and voicing the cab...
Indeed it is a bass version although I bet that the guitar version is possibly a better bass amp. I've had vintage bass amps like a wem dominator which were open backed, not ideal but still sounded ok. But they used an actual bass capable driver. The Vox pathfinder bass amp uses what I can only describe as alarm clock speakers why just why I cry lol and both the amp and speakers clip easy. Could of been a really cool little amp.
4. I think they have subtle variations. Although i had a fender USA p bass once that sounded like the very definition of a pbass, it made other p basses that I had owned or played sound very ordinary. But it was a bit too much for me.
5. Picked up a bass. Disgusting strings and manky fretboard. Not the worst I've seen but still a bit gross. Totally unadjusted truss rod too. Why would anyone not change strings or not clean the bass every now and then. I certainly wouldn't sell a bass in such condition. Last year I bought a bass that no joke I had to put bleach on the neck to get the stink out. Dried it very carefully and oiled it after, it was fine. But you should of seen the sh*t that came out of the neck wood it ruined multiple tea towels (gf was not amused lol) Oh and I once had to scrap the sh*t off an epiphone fretboard once too. bork!
6. I bought a little vox pathfinder for living room practice. I was surprised at how nice it looks and well built it is especially for its price tag. However the sound quality is pretty low and rather hollow sounding. The open back doesn't help but I think its mainly from those 2 little 5 inch speakers they use. Why didn't they put in a proper ten inch driver or 2 eight inch ones and also added a gain control as it clips too easy. Then it would of been an incredible little living room amp. I just can't fathom the idea of using the terrible little speakers.
7. Interesting. So how does it sound with a bit of gain/volume does it have a nice overdriven sound? And what a lovely looking amp btw. Very nice.
8. Oh i've seen this bass in person and had a little play of it. It is indeed in fantastic condition! Sounds great too, just like a jazz should. Marks a nice guy too and despite his avatar is not at all a scrooge lol.
9. I've fancied one of these for a while now. I believe Bugera themselves said that it could be used as a bass amp also.
10. I agree low action. Also of course taking out a touch bass and bringing up the mids and highs. Or as bill said above some type of biamping. Some guitar heads can be used for bass on there own too that naturally will give more that sound.
11. Maybe Grangur could help?
12.
I'd try zinc, supplement not strings....
Good call. Also you can get this brush on stuff for the nail and cuticle. No not nail varnish! Lol. Not that I would no about that kinda thing.
13.
This is a sticky subject, as of course music is subjective. But.. there is some absolute garbage out there. I was subjected to this on saturday. Now I'm an open minded ear, but nothing prepared me for how sh*t this is. How on earth this record made money(and it did) is just beyond me. Alan Patridge's Monkey Tennis is a good idea compared to this. The thing that really did me in, is that the song changes key a lot. And it goes on and on and on, and i was subjected to the 12' version. Im not a musical snob, but you have draw the line somewhere. What is the actual point of this record. I have no idea.
Excellent question. Not sure if I can think of the worst song I've heard. Oh its I think called mama I love you by the spice girls. My younger sister played it on repeat. I will spare everyone by not putting up the vid link. Also this might explain a few things but seeing that very Star Trekkin vid is an early childhood memory of mine haha, I liked it then I kinda like it now. Its is rubbish though.
14. I think it was the price that was the main issue if they were I dunno 200-300 pounds they would of been a easy sell. I actually played one in a shop briefly the whizzer cone thing had been knocked both had been and it gave some buzzing. I would like to try a properly working one. Intact pmt all the floor bass amps were in poor condition! One way or the other.
15. Its a Fake! Haha
16. According to most advice these days one simply can't gig or even jam without at least all of 400+ watts
17.
OK people, enlighten me please. First off I went searching for a forum called Noodle Bar, or at least a sticky thread. None found so found one of the noodle bar polls and now I'm wondering... it's just a poll / post within the General Discussion forum right? Don't take offence at my use of the word 'just' - it's not demeaning in any way!. If you're pointing at the screen and calling MisterT a muppet for not finding the actual Noodle Bar then fine, I'll be Statler. Or Waldorf. Being new to this, yes, I'd be interested in posting but being a bit new to playing I don't fancy it as a competition, would just rather post and see what people think or comment on others' playing asking for tips or whatever. You lot post all the time but us beginners are a bit fwitened of posting in the first place, let alone for there to be a winner or at least a ranking factor. And assuming I was right with the polls being posted straight into the General Discussion forum then the Noodle Bar deserves a sub-forum in its own right, save having to trawl and of course that forum sees a new topic drop off page 1 in a few short hours. Just my 2p.
We post our noodles in the noodle thread for that month in this recording section and we can discuss them there also. Then after the allotted time frame there a vote on all the noodles in the general discussion section. Here is an example of last October's entries. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/293233-october-noodle-bar-now-open/ And here is its voting thread. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/294506-noodle-challenge-voting/
18.
I personally like the Noodle Bar in it’s current form (no I don’t mean on hold and under debate) the only change I would suggest is possibly doubling the allowed length of time so that a noodle could be anything from a few seconds up to, but not necessarily using all of, a couple of minutes. Mrs Agwife has mentioned in the past that some people could be put off entering if they feel their playing isn’t up to scratch, which I can understand; however, the challenge aspect asks us to vote for our FAVORITE three NOT the most technically proficient or best structured or whatever – you get my drift. Anyone who watches Strictly will tell you favorite doesn’t necessarily mean most accomplished. To me the joy of the Noodle Bar is listening to and being inspired by everyone’s contributions. I’m sure most of us can agree that our bass isn’t primarily a solo instrument but having said that I’ve been frequently surprised and amazed at the sheer variety of sounds and styles that manifest themselves in the Noodle Bar.
I pretty much agree with that. Especially about the challenge aspect. I think people should not be put off as you say its not a vote on abilities. And I think the voting itself provides discussion and interaction. People also shouldn't fear getting the least votes or even non. Have courage! Be brave! Once more into the breach of the noodle challenge! I'm glad people have chimed in with ideas etc. Because I honestly thought no one was interested. It will be interesting to see what happens and what changes will be made. Whatever the change I will still be in however. On another note I've been sitting on a noodle and slowly refining it.
19.
IMHO the Noodle Bar is a key to the sort of thing that should be the life-blood of Basschat. Whenever I see it Mrs G and I like to take a look and listen to the contributions. By the time I notice the thread it's normally too late to vote. It's the competition element that puts me off of contributing to the Noodle Bar. Compared to most here I'm new to bass and I'm chap at playing, but I can see that for most who do enter it's the voting that makes it worth doing. It's sad that it doesn't get the profile on the forum it deserves. IMHO it's more relevant to BC than the composition thread, yet I know that struggles too.
Ah don't worry about being any good because a noodle can be a rather simple affair. Also i have came last in more votes than amyone. In a way its part of the fun. Its not a competition its a challenge, to use the bare bones but still get something hopefully half pleasent, within the allotted time and rules. For me it's a challenge against the agreed rules rather than going up against others. Although I have dreamt of getting the most votes. And how for a month I could say I was the best noodler that month in the world!!! I don't think there's another noodle challenge for bass anyhow. My gf plays bass better than I do but for some reason she just can not put a little noodle together. I'm going to see if she will join bc and join in.
20.
didn't we discuss that before and the idea of the challenge to a picture takes away from the composition challenge. i don't understand why this needs to be a "challenge". i thought the original idea was to get people recording, without the pressure of a composition. putting pressure on people as a challenge, or to work from a picture probably puts more pressure to make something. i know that some months in the composition challenge, i back out cos i just cant see anything in the picture, and that would happen here. just keep it open as a safe space for people to throw noodles in, with no pressure and with loops or other instrumentation if they wish. there doesnt have to be a winner or loser, just have fun with it.
I just think a challenge adds something. Focuses the mind maybe? And stops it being a free for all thread where if your lucky someone might give it a listen before it gets buried. Not that we are initadated with entries haha. Its not really a serious competition just a way of grouping the months entries together and asking people to give them a listen and a vote if you like any. I really think if its just a thread for noodles it would seem a little aimless. I need that bit of motivation. I'm all up for keeping it a play anything you like. Maybe having the votes every two months, with multiple entries allowed??? That would give people more time and it would maybe get a few more entries.
21.
Totally. I had an Arsedown Evo which always had that very slight 'fizzing' at the tail end of a note. Tried two other different amps with my cabs and completely clean. Curiously enough, one of their 'After Eight' 15 watters fizzed too even through an extension cab.
I've tried it with another cab it doesn't have that problem. Although I do think an abm 500 I owned had a little fizz/grit at the tail end of some notes.
22. Ive spotted this local to me on eBay I think I've seen it up before. I'm curious what were these like? Any good? Seems in relative good nik but what do these actually go for? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/332096329620
23. A few more thoughts. To open/spice it up a little more while still keep things relatively simple for everyone. Make it more of a challenge/comp like the composition thread, by having a picture for inspiration. Also the winner of that month chooses next months inspiration pic. The pic can be anything at all. Increase the allotted time up to 100 seconds which is still short but maybe not as constrained as 60 seconds. If people want to use less time then that is obviously ok. Allow fx still. But also Loopers is now allowed. After all its still bass playing. I'm not sure about drum tracks as I feel that is getting into full on composition challenge and possibly getting from the simplicity side??? Really we just want the bass guitar instrument. Maybe singing? I personally wouldn't but I would really dig someone singing with just bass (and the allowed fx).
24.
Is the cabinet lined?
Yes sides and back.
25.
It's probably just a little resonance you didn't know was there. All speakers have lot's of little resonances and if you hit certain frequencies the can seem to jump out at you. It may be that it is just bad luck that it coincides with something the amp or your bass is doing and emphasizing something that was there unnoticed all the time. Without hearing it it is difficult to say. The fact you only hear it head on suggests it's quite directional which you'd expect with a 4x10. Actually a lot of older cabs are more efficient than modern ones and your amp will be fine with 4 ohms.
Maybe to the resonance although it is there on every note. Which I thought might imply a mechanical driver issue. Rather than resonance which I possibly wrongly assume would more likely only effect certain notes etc? The top two drivers seem to be making the noise more than the bottom two. I suppose I could hook up the drivers individualaly and give them a listen separate also.
