If it really does have a 25.5" scale, seems to me that design is almost certainly a bastardised guitar rather than an instrument designed as a bass.
Probably short on materials and/or decided to cut costs, By using a modified guitar design as you say.
Interesting and very strange-looking, certainly. But £850 for what is by any measure cheapo communist-era East German tat? Contender for the most spectacularly ambitious overpricing yet seen on Ebay, surely!
That was my thinking but I did my want to sound harsh. Lol. I think its interesting enough to worth some merit. But certainly not £850 not even close. And the overpricing award goes to the infamous Tennessee bass still on eBay.
-
Well I guess if the cabs were the same exactly apart from the drivers. Then the drivers will have slightly different specs even if in the same product line. Its possible they could sound very similar and again possible they would have a slightly different tone. I would ask the manufacturer directly. Or find out the exact specs and maybe one of the knowledgeable chaps on here could give a more detailed answer.

No idea if its worth £850 but its a unusual bass and looks pretty cool all the same. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291981712196

Has anyone gone from lightweight back to heavy?
Twincam replied to AndyTravis's topic in Amps and Cabs
The issue of weight applies on both sides... Many people are obsessed with the weight of gear (basses in particular). If we all obsessed over our own weight, and did some regular excersize, maybe the weight of gear wouldn't be such as issue. I'm now in the "over 35" age bracket, and to be honest, was starting to let myself get a little "cuddly" for want of a better word. I have also spent years playing sport/weight lifting and have more injuries than I care to remember (particularly at this time of year). Last January my wife and I decided to make changes and joined slimming world, started running, bought a road bike and got out there. So, the obvious thing was the waist size of my jeans when down by about 3", and naturally felt better, but the one thing I wasn't expecting... nearly all those "niggles" went away. Playing/carrying gear is really no issue (I use a stingray 5)... fact is, we could probably all do with moving a little more. It's. I wonder we complain about "heavy basses" when we stand up and play for 4 hours over a night, particularly if like me, you sit at a desk for a large portion of your work day. Obviously, if you have an injury, that needs to be respected, and there is a lot to be said for correct lifting technique, so look after yourselves. But get moving, and equally get stretching!!!
I have said this before, bit not as nicely. Then just after I said it I hurt myself lifting something fairly light! And I have lifted weights for years. It totally changed my attitude towards people who like lighter gear because of not wanting to be lifting a heavy amp. -
Although they`re not the loudest amps I`ve used, Ashdown ABMs seem to have the most solid presence of any that I`ve used, the sound just seems to slam into you. I find I have to push the volume on them much more than on other makes I`ve used, but once there the sound is very full. I also found this when trying out their Rootmaster amp. In comparison to my Tonehammer it had more solidity to the sound. But then I use a Sansamp to get all the solidity I need, on top of the sound I want as I really like the eq/gain/voicing of the Tonehammer. The Sansamp set flat just beefs it all up. Makes gigging with provided rigs easy as well - Sansamp and Tonehammer DI into whatever, my sound instantly.
I think Ashdowns are fairly rated. There not overly loud or under powered for there rating. Even the older lower powered ones had decent heft. In regards to volume as we know watts volume output is effect by all sorts. The marketing department being one of them, how they rate the amp lol. But even if rated fairly, the eq and any associated electrical trickery that's especially in many modern amps can have a big impact on perceived volume and heft.

Has anyone here converted a 4 string to a 5 string?
Twincam replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
There's a guy on eBay, a real guitar 'improver' who can turn a silk purse into a sows ear...
Lol. Careful we ain't really allowed to mention him. And its a shame we can't mention him as imo he is ripping people that possibly don't know better off. And his instruments have a huge potential to put new players off learning as they are not right. -
What really hacks me off is that they've obviously taken it in p/x, and taken some wonderful photos of the bass. I paid and then they phoned to say it was going for a once over (not with their advertised 'in house' luthier) and 4 days later they say "we can't get it working, the replacement pickups are expensive and hard to find - do you want a refund?". Just seems really lax, I should've known better when they'd listed it as the wrong model...
I bet they found out it was a better model or someone maybe the in house luthier taken a fancy to it and are talking bs! I would be peed off tbh. Because who takes in an instrument and doesn't test it. I mean even cash converters etc plug an instrument in. So I doubt they did not and it suddenly stopped working.

Fault or not Fault? Thomann`s customer service
Twincam replied to zvirus's topic in General Discussion
If they now don't take it back. Which hopefully they will. Then move the bridge to the best position and see if a nice chrome bridge cover will cover up the rear holes. It looks just like a weird factory mistake. I had a bass that had a very slightly misaligned bridge that I bought from thomann it must of only been a millimeter out but I wasn't happy so I got a replacement from them within 3 days. They were really good about it. I was overly polite in my request. -
From the "Blue Peter" school of speaker maintenance: if I'm changing drivers or have the cab grille off for any reason, I usually give the cones a quick spray with Mrs Shaggy's hairspray - helps to seal the paper against damp / stains, and also gets them looking nice and black again (unless they were never black in the first place of course....). It's a tip artists use for sealing watercolour paintings and pictures done in pastel - too much I'm sure would over-stiffen the cone, but just a touch seems to help them last in good condition Haven't heard that one, but large drivers (eg: 15") are apparently prone to "cone sag" and you're supposed to rotate the cab through 180 degrees every now and again when stored to compensate for this. Never done it, mind....... Never happened to me with a bass cab, and somewhere like Wembley loudspeakers could do a proper repair of course. But another "Blue Peter" bodge; my prized 1970's Dahlquist DQ-10 hi-fi speakers started farting a few years ago, and inevitably I found that the foam rubber mountings for the cones on the woofer drivers had disintegrated, as above. Stuck them back to the frame surround with adhesive woven acrylic tape (used for surgical dressings) smeared with silicone rubber sealant, with a bit of a fold to allow movement - still going strong.
You spray paper cones and possibly rubber surrounds with hairspray! I see your logic of sealing things kinda! but knowing what chemicals etc that are in hairspray. Then I can not understate how much I would say this is a bad thing! As it could break down elements of the cone material and weaken glue. Looking at the first ingredient in hair spray is Alcohol! Which isn't a good thing for paper or glue or rubber! Etc etc. Then a whole host of other stuff that doubtfully would would protect a driver as a coating. But more likely break it down or weaken it. Not to mention even a few light coatings will start to add mass as some elements will remain on the cone after every coating. Changing the drivers specs. I hope that wasn't the cause of your hifi speakers disintegrating. Please no one coat there drivers in hairspray.
I hope we’re not considering the Noodle bar as taking a Cat to some deceased equine creature. Whaddya reckon chaps and chapesses, shall we see if a January Noodle Bar provides any more entries? Congratulations to Skol, by the way and also thanks for overseeing the Bar these past months.
Well hopefully it won't come down to that. I already have another (crap) noodle. However it does really need a few more entries than last month. As I actually felt embarrassed haha. I know it was said the established composition comp doesn't get the attention it deserves considering the amount of members. This was supposed to be an even easier way to get forum members involved. But alas poor Twincam not many are interested. I think people must be frightened lol
Come on people, FFS! (...that's shorthand for 'Feeling Festive Surely'). Here are some short, 60 second clips of people playing bass. On a bass players' forum. And here's a no-expense-spared infographic, summarising this conundrum: Thanks for Mark Ewbie for this slice of insight.
I did think the 60 seconds limit would encourage people to have a listen as its not to much effort. Even spread over a few days during voting its even easier. Think this is the lowest turnout of entries to date . Of course no one has to enter etc but it really is a bit of fun and takes very little time. And the sheer thrill to know you might get voted by the bass playing public as the best noodler for a month should inspire. Alas know one is reading this. Im getting the feeling one should fall upon the sword with the noodle bar. I did try to get a little more forum participation going. Maybe a rule tweak could gain a few more entries? Bribery?

Had a bvp5500 its a very good and well made amp. However things to note its heavy and its only approx 350w rms at 4 ohm and approx half 8 ohm. The veyrons seem to get a lot of positive reviews and I believe they were tested to be in the region of 500 - 700watts rms I can't remember the exact figure. If I had to buy a new amp and was on a budget I would possible buy the veyron tube version. And I would definitely own a bvp5500 again although its needs 4 ohms to really get going or a very efficient cab or lots of drivers. Its not underpowered but its not the loudest amp. Probably the best amp that you can buy brand new for around £200.

How to fix the noisy crack/snap when I turn my bass combo off?
Twincam replied to kiat's topic in Repairs and Technical
Tube? Nope its all transistor. Its probable best to get it serviced. It could be it has some capacitors that stops that thump or at least dampen it that need changing. -
Is it definitely a hiss or a hum? Have you checked any connection blocks or grounding wires are secure. The thing is how do you know its the preamp? It could be a power section issue. Although since your getting an issue more using the synth it would suggest its indeed somewhere in the pre fx section.
Can ya ..damn I just done this naked ! Listen to Noodle prints by Timothy Terrence IV #np on #SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/timothy-terrence-higgins-iv/noodle-prints
Very Beatles at the start. Then goes into a true noodle.
I can't leave Skol languishing here alone any longer. 78 Precision with rounds into Audacity then compressed & normalised. Might just play this to the rest of the band and see if it goes anywhere. https://soundcloud.com/agwin/ags-idea
Very smooth err bottom end on that piece lol. Would sound awesome really cranked shaking the walls.
So what's the script? you can use drum tracks and FX?
Fx yes!. Drum beats and certain click tracks to bend the rules no lol although on occasion I don't see why some rule bending shouldn't be allowed to let slide. Loopers are the devil here haha. The original concept is to keep it as simple as possible. Which levels the field so to say and that anyone can join in without feeling They need a certain amount of gear. Its a shame its not caught on more. I really wanted people to engage and because of the simplicity any one with a bass, amp, phone etc can join in no matter what there noodle ability. And it doesn't take much time up. There's been some great noodles over the months.

Was messing around with the overdrive on my gf's fender rumble v3 I liked it only at higher gain really. Could of done with having a blend as well as level etc to make it useable at lower settings. https://soundcloud.com/user-531446910/noodle-overdrive

Nick Seymour / Crowded House appreciation thread
Twincam replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
I do love a tasteful bass player! I'm not a huge fan of Crowded House, but the John Deacon style of serving the song is one that I very much gravitate towards. Of course it helps if the material is top drawer to start with and the other musicians appreciate the space in the arrangement...
This pretty much sums up my thinking. Some crowded house I can take or leave. As Conan said though very tasteful playing. Some of his bass line are beautiful without being overbearing or overly flashy. Later on will have a listen I think. -
Not to be harsh and I know a few are for sale but the ba300 & 600 in all speaker configs were one of the poorest reviewed ampeg products of all time. Look on talkbass and product reviews on retail sites to get an idea of what I mean. I nearly bought one and I'm glad I didn't. Your maybe better off getting a new ampeg v2 combo. They sound great!, Although when I went to test the new v2 combos they had some rattles. But they can't all be bad.
Like the video! Sounds good too. No rush on that, especially as I'm currently set to win by default. Did I mention that the deadline is - ahem - 1st December?
I have a noodle however its another rather simple/naive affair. Probably with terrible recording too lol. So I doubt I will be in line for a win. Must get it recorded in the next few days. Where are the other entries? Normally we have a few by now. Come on people.
Not sure this is the right place for this – if it’s decreed from on high that it should be elsewhere so be it – but I thought it was (tenuously) relevant here. Last month fellow noodler, Twincam, suggested it might be interesting to see a video of me playing “Octonoodle” Well I’ve finally taken my phone from my pocket so here’s a slightly extended version: https://youtu.be/stgZZO3NBto Obviously this is not this month’s entry – I’m still waiting on my muse for that one
Great vid I enjoyed that. Very good sound quality considering.

Squealing is normally from the valves. And not uncommon. If you replaced a tube or so and its stopped, I would say a trip to an amp tech is probably a waste. Not that I'm saying you shouldn't. Its always good to have something checked over. Seems like it was just a tube issue.
-
So is the bass playing right? You say its back and they done there best. That sounds like its still not too your liking? Put it this way your bass is of a quality it should be in a way exactly like you want it and be able to get the same as other wooden neck basses if not better. I'm honestly surprised you've had issues. And not at all saying it's you. Many good manufacturers and good luthiers seem to not be doing what they should do of late! I won't say anymore but I've been getting a not annoyed at certain things and customer service of late of people whom should be doing better. And of late I've had too put things right that should of been correct in the first place.
