1. I have never, ever had to ask a guitarist to turn UP his volume. Most (all?) of them seem to be incurable. I think what you are suggesting is totally reasonable and what's important too is that excessive volume is the killer of good musicianship and audience enjoyment. Stick to your guns. Frank.
2. That's the perfect Stingray. Lovely. Frank.
3. My mini rig is a Barefaced one10, driven by a GK MB200. This has a tiny footprint and a very low weight too. Wonderful sounding and loud enough to gig. All bought used for about £400, or slightly less I think. You might do better than that? This is completed by a Steinberger XT-2 bought here for £150. Slightly over your budget but can you get smaller and still be gig-worthy? Frank.
4.
Will the production team have been combing through the recording, checking whether anybody is visible who's died since it was recorded? At the rate they've been dropping off the twig, there's plenty of potential for embarrassment.
Frank.
5. I fancy the new Quilter 800 amp although I'd like to try before I buy 'cos I don't really need another amp. Frank.
6.
Now £199 https://www.anderton...i-bass-amp-head Very tempted to get one as a backup - should be loud enough through two Tecamp 112's for my 4-piece semi-acoustic jazz/swing/pop crew. Shouldn't it?
As posted above, the GK MB200 is probably a better option. I know mine is surprisingly loud and I really like the tone, although that's subjective. The MB200 is slightly more expensive but it's smaller, has great features and I've never heard a bad thing said about them. Just my opinion of course but quite a few people seem to agree. Frank.
7. Great playing and singing Blue. Thanks for that. Frank.
8. I fixed mine using superglue. Works a treat. Frank.
9. A two fret stretch between index and second fingers. Frank.
10. I've gone half way on the amps - a very wonderful Thunderfunk, but I'm impressed by my recently purchased EBS Reidmar 750, so a bit of both worlds really. I've nothing against class D amps but I feel the earlier ones were let down by their feeble power supplies - not the fact that they were class D. Although I've owned, and still own, amps with valve pre-amps, I've never owned, or wanted to own, an all-valve amp. In fact, I prefer amps that are 100% solid-state. However, my Barefaced cabs are going nowhere. As a slight aside, the combination of Thunderfunk amp and Barefaced BB2 cab is the only rig I've owned that gets regular positive comments from non-bassplayers. (And from bassplayers too of course.) Frank.
11. EDIT: I'd be better to post when I'm sober. Frank.
12.
I'm probably being a bit thick, but looking at the spec, how can it be 17 inches tall, have a head and two 10 inch speakers??
The depth and height figures are swopped. Frank.
13.
It got that dirty because I literally dimed the gain to the max, as Sratas asked. You can see the position of the gain dial each time, and the drive is engaged adding another 6db. There's lots of clean tone, which is why I love the amp so much. The tubes? Again, that's what makes it what is - if iit had an SS front end, it wouldn't really be for me.
Yes, I saw that. I'm not one for that much dirt, but, like yourself I think, prefer a cleaner sound. Interesting amps and being hand-built from discrete components, something I'm very happy to see on the market in this throw-away age. Thanks for the video. Excellent work. Frank.
14.
OK.. does this answer your question? (Recorded at very low volume as the kids are in bed...!)
That's horrible. The clean tone is lovely though. There are two things that put me off these amps - firstly, I'd prefer solid-state throughout, no valves. Secondly, I'd prefer it if it didn't get so dirty. These seem to be super amps at a bargain price. Frank.
15.
Looking forward to getting the BH - hopefully early next week. I hate waiting for new gear! Trying to get Thomann to deal with the LH-1000 under the terms of their 3 year warranty, but so far no joy.
That's very disappointing. Their 3 year warranty is the main reason I bought my last amp from them. (EBS Reidmar 750. Thankfully it has been 100% reliable so far) Frank.
16. I'd forgot all about bassworld and basstalk. I was a member on both, so I think I first signed up around 2003/4. How time flies! Frank.
17.
Crazy money. Crazy. You could pick one up for around £1050 if you shopped around a year back. I can imagine sales will drop. In no way is a Fender worth that money IMO. My Flea Roadworn Jazz is the best Jazz I've personally played; I prefer it to my 2011 USA Standard (but that is going NOWHERE!).
It'll be fine and people will pay it. I remember back when the updated US Standard range was released in 2008 and people were saying that £795 rrp was too much for them. This year people were paying £1200+ for the same thing. (And don't get me started on "custom shop" pickups on the post 2010 models that justified another price increase. What the hell is "custom" about winding a pickup ffs?) Frank.
18.
Update: It looks like the next stop is small claims court they have till the 20th of December to reply. I will let you know how it goes.....
Good luck. It's a rotten situation. Frank.
19. Very interesting. I love Markbass gear. Thanks for posting. Frank.
20.
I've had a couple of those, yeah. Really great for the money, to be fair to them Would love to see a pic of your strap extender
I can email you a pic - I can't work out how to post an image here. I'm actually getting mark 2 made at the moment. I think using the original strap pin as a fixing is putting the extension arm in my way when playing above fret 15 or so. Mark 2 will be fitted higher up the body above the existing strap pin. Frank.
21.
What do you have, Frank?
Oh just the cheapo Steinberger XT-2. I bought it to take away in my campervan because of the small size but I've been very pleasantly surprised by how much I like it. I got a carbon fibre extension arm made to position the strap above the 12th fret. This is designed to fold away. I do intend to gig with it soon. I'm also very interested in trying a Status Streamline in the future. Frank.
22. Lovely. I'm a recent convert to these. Frank.
23.
Lots of punk and hardcore bands in the 90s onwards use/used a Stingray. One of the reasons I got into them as a 12/13 year old. Good Riddance - mid 90s. Mad Caddies Lagwagon Screw 32 Descenedents The biggest influence for me was just the entire look...I loved the oval plate. As soon as I heard one, I was like 'that is IT!'.
It's funny. I remember walking into a music shop in 1976/7 and seeing a Stingray hanging on the wall. I instantly hated the oval scratch plate. I've got used to the look now but it took about 30 years. Frank.
24. Here is what Bill Fitzmaurice says about the speaker in the Orange OBC115. It makes interresting reading from a man who really knows his stuff. "This is one of those cases where the drivers used is known, so you can make valid comparisons. The 115 uses the Eminence Kappa 115. It displaces 343cc. The 410 uses Beta 10s. They displace 102cc each, for a total of 408cc. The Kappa 15 does have a lower frequency range than the Beta 10, but when you go lower in frequency the displacement requirement for equal output increases. If the 115 was going to be a good match with the 410 it would need considerably more displacement, not less. A 115 along with a 210 would make far more sense. As to the Beta 10 and Kappa 15 specifically, both are low end drivers, frankly not worthy of being used in cabs in the price range of Orange. There are many cabs with better drivers that sell for less. Something to think about before parting with your cash? In the end though, if you like it, you like it, and that's all that matters. Frank.
25. I'm very happy with my GK MB200 for both tone and volume. I use it with a Barefaced one10 and it's a good match for this cab. This combination gets used for rehearsals and small pub gigs and works well. The light weight and compact size are a huge bonus. EDIT: I just noticed that you have a Barefaced Midget. The MB200 works well with the Midget/Super Midget and is slightly louder than with the one10 Frank.
