Of course all the purists will point out how bad his technique is with the thumb over the top, he's clearly never going to make it as a pro...

We were offered a Dec 24th gig but we knew we'd end up having to learn a load of crappy xmas songs just for one night (I know the Slade one but that's it for me) so we politely turned it down.

Like some of Hillage's stuff, especially the Green album which I picked up on cassette in the early 80's and now have on CD. Bands like Ozric Tentacles probably wouldn't exist without the groundwork done by Hillage et al. Not quite so keen on Gong, one of those bands that I listened to expecting and wanting to like but it just didn't float my boat to the same extent, do have their 'best of' CD though.

I bought a jetglo as it was the one I thought best out of the common finishes. I ideally wanted a white one (well actually a Chris Squire sig model but my financial common sense wouldn't allow it ). Come to think of it is there a proper name for white in ricspeak? Love it if it was 'albinoglo'.

Is this 'chimp finger' then?

That's excellent, always good to feel you are progressing in some way. I think I realistically peaked about 10 years ago and probably won't get any better (and I'm very very average at best) but occasionally there's something that just won't work out quite right for ages and then miraculously seems to fit into place and it's a little victory. If Black Dog is a good workout get an accurate transcript of The Lemon Song and give that a go. It's a bit of a beast from what I recall!

I'll be honest, I didn't actually listen to it when I posted it, I simply searched youtube for a clip of them just so people would recognise them (seems to be wrong name on drum kit, maybe I should have picked another clip!). The tambourine thing was just a bit of a bonus. Now actually hearing it I have to say they weren't nearly as good as I was expecting just watching silent footage.

Get it down the glue factory next time she pops out, claim it 'just ran away'...

As it was so cheap i picked one up for my ric. Whether I can actually be arsed to set up 2 amps to check it out when it arrives is another matter!
-
I like the tambourine fail in this one... They don't seem to have a bass player - what kind of band is that?

I saw him in the mid eighties playing with Rory and IIRC he was usung a P bass then.

Been using a Samson 'bug' type for years on and off, only had problems with interfering external signals on 2 gigs, both spotted at soundcheck and just didn't use it. I started using one as I was playing midi pedals more and more and the lead from the bass seemed to be constantly getting trapped under a pedal or in the way of my feet as I was attempting to switch patches so I went wireless purely from a practical necessity. There is a bit of accompanying low level 'white noise' when you play with one but you can't hear it at gigging volume, only if you really listen close up at bedroom practice level. Being able to nip out front at soundcheck and double check the mix is handy too.
We've been asked to 'turn down an octave or two' in the past, and have used it as an in-band joke ever since
That must make the strings really flappy The 'show' thing is still pretty standard in the US and interchangeable with 'gig'. When have you ever heard anyone saying 'OK guys it's gig-time'?

I've just realised I don't think I've ever actually owned a kettle with a 'kettle lead' and certainly not since I've started using music gear. I think I went straight from the old fashioned ones you stuck on a gas ring with a little whistle on the end to tell you when it had boiled to the ones with a hard wired base that the jug kettle then sits on and connects with. I'm pretty bad for mixing and matching kettle leads from various bits of accumulated music gear but they are all similar fuse ratings so not a problem.

Back to the OP, any of you actually been to Spalding? it's a real backwater, probably more so in the late 60's. Imagine all those guys turning up to play the gig - locals probably thought it was an alien invasion or something!

I don't watch the Tues short vs, prefer to record the full Fri night then catch up with it over the weekend. Did anyone see Little Roy doing the Nirvana covers last week? I really didn't quite know what to make of it. It seemed at times to be slipping into Dread Zep territory which I'm sure wasn't the intention I quite like the Miles Kane set, nothing original but I'd probably go see him live.
Seen him with the Blockheads half a dozen times and he never fails to impress me, my fave living bass player. I still can't play the brill bassline to Hit Me... properly
When Jools was interviewing WJ the other week on Later and they chatted about Norman WJ mentioned that 'Hit Me..' still remained a challenge for bass players and he's not wrong!

Leaving a band, without another band to go to. Yes or No?
KevB replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
In my case I tend not to seriously look at other options until I actually leave a band so for me it's pretty much essential to make the break before starting a new project. If it takes several months for something that I'm genuinely interested in to come along then so be it, there are open mic/jam/dep sessions to keep me ticking over playing wise while between gigs and I'm not that desperate for the money. Nothing worse than being in a project you don't feel committed to. -
I must say that, as I almost exclusively play small venues, I don't think I've ever actually DI'd through the Hartke pedal, I keep it in the chain for the tone shaping which seems much better with it in place than without (normal rig is TE 1X15 combo linked to SWR2X10 extension cab). The TE combo has DI out itself anyway.
-
Hartke Bass Attack pedal has tone shaping and acts as a DI unit, robustly constructed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C91FNiALTFY&feature=related

I saw him playing with WJ in the mid 80's and I was rivetted by his playing. I couldn't have cared less about Wilco doing his old clockwork mouse routine, Norm was the man that night.
-
In my experience it takes musicians longer to tune to each other by ear than a quick run through an electronic tuner so how taking longer about it somehow improves the 'momentum' of a recording session I don't know. As for live situations I cringe when I see a band come onstage and then waste what seems like an eternity going throug that ''Ere Fred, give us a G will ya?'' rigmorole.

I often got variations of 'I'm too good for this sh*t' from a middle aged drummer in a past band after another Saturday night pub gig. It was his band, I was a relative newcomer and I didn't feel it appropriate to point out that a fun side band I was also in had a 15 yr old who was technically better than he was, so no he wasn't too good for pub gigs, it was pretty much exactly his level (and mine).

Break a leg, not a string My gig last week was the first in nearly a year out of it. I'd forgotten how they flash by once you start playing the first sing. Hope it's a good 'un for ya.

More new Fender models - The 'Modern Player' Series
KevB replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
I already have a jazz and precision deluxe in Butterscotch Blonde so a Telecaster bass would fill out the family very nicely. I'll wait a couple of years until there are a few around on eBay in the £300 range. I normally don't go for a really thuddy sound so the addition of the bridge pickup would hopefully allow for a wider range of tones.
