Most hateful song on your covers bands set list?
KevB replied to Dave Tipping's topic in General Discussion
Re Sex On Fire, the band had been doing Molly's chambers for a while so we thought we'd have a go at another of theirs. I was adamant we weren't going to do Sex On Fire as I'd heard it by practically every covers band I'd seen over the last 6 months. However after perusing KoL's back catalog I was struggling to find something with similar impact. In the end I picked Use Somebody which apparently is also fairly common yet I've not heard anyone do it locally myself. -
£33 to see what is really only a covers band
The Aussie Floyds are about as close to the originals as you can get. If you wanted to see the real Floyd (assuming they were still alive, talking to each other and gigging), you'd probably have to pay a lot more than that. I saw the Aussies a couple of years ago doing the Wall and it was a really fantastic show - as close to a real Floyd show as you could fit into Leicester's DeMontfort Hall. Having said that, I'd be thinking twice about paying that much to see an original band, let alone a tribute. Maybe I'm just an old skinflint
It was the Leicester gig that I was at too, pretty sure that was between £25 and £30 with booking fee. -

I've seen at least 3 different bass players in Tull do it and I don't think any of them completely nailed it either so I wouldn't go too hard on yourself with it -

My last (now defunct) band also had Dakota in the list. However I took on the lead vox for that so it seemed to go by fairly quickly and I didn't drag it out fully at the end. Our drummer was depping in another band and he was all for us chaging our version to how the other band did it - he said they based it on a live vs where the ending 'went all quiet and basic and then slowly built back up again' I took one look at him and said 'You mean it actually goes on even longer than the studio version?' The one that I never really got into was Zombie by the Cranberries. I'd already done it in a previous band and thought I'd escaped it for good. I came to despise Sweet Home Alabama but not done that in a band for 6 or 7 yrs now. -

I think there was also a pretty accurate guitarpro file for it available at one time. I may have it at home if you have the software. -
Record shops closing? Who cares? new documentary
KevB replied to redstriper's topic in General Discussion
BigRed's on the money here. It's definitely a two edged thing. Yes I used to support the independent shops as much as I could, enjoyed a rummage through the giveaways and second hands but you could see they couldn't last once the internet got going properly. Must have seen at least 4 or 5 non-chain outlets in Nottm go under in the near 30 yrs I've lived here. However I've been able to get hold of some stuff online either physically posted to me or as a download that I'd never have seen in even the more obscure indepepndents. I do use Fopp from time to time but it's mostly only good for filling in a few blanks of some ageing band's back catalog on the cheap, not much of a selection of new artists unless it charts. It's still worth supporting on the whole though I wonder why HMV keep propping it up, can't be a big profit margin when a big chunk of the stock is £3 or £5 per CD. -
Yeah, the APFS guys played Gilmour's 50th, and apparently then did so as Brit Floyd at his 60th!!
Doesn't anyone else find this just a bit weird? If I'd been in a successful originals band most of my life and it was basically my job then the last thing on earth I'd want is some people coming and playing the stuff at me again on a major birthday. When I'm fifty I'm not paying someone to come over and do biochemical assays in front of me I know that... To the OP I've seen APF show twice, once when they did whole of DSOTM and then a few years back when they did the whole of The Wall. I think there was a split in the band and some of them now appear as Brit Floyd, think it was something to do with management. The Wall was about £25-£30 a ticket and worth it as it was a big production number. Not sure if I'd pay £33 to see them just run through a greatest hits package but if you are a serious PF fan and haven't seen them they are a great tribute act. -
Well go enjoy yourself, they can't expect too much having given such a meagre brief as to what they want. They may just not know what they want themselves at this stage if it's a new project. Ideal opportunity to make that slot your own and sell yourself to them as a character and player. At least they can't start nitpicking with the 'I'm not sure it goes like that dude' bit.
Not much of a bass line though . . . .
In a nutshell as usual flyfisher. It showcases his 6 string bass as his ultimate instrument I think but I wouldn't go further. Close your eyes and its a guitar solo in a lower register. Fine playing for sure but it doesn't really register with me as what I consider 'bass playing' at all. If he's in a jazz trio or something with no guitar then I could see it working really well though. And no 'Clutterbucking' which is worth brownie points

Have you heard that Thin Lizzy Track?...Perhaps Not?
KevB replied to MB1's topic in General Discussion
Hopefully someone will spend some time scouring through this lot with an objective ear and compiling a selection which isn't jus the usual lame 'bonus tracks' that turn up on too many reissiues and the like. Hopefully out of 700 tracks there might be a few that are genuine unreleased songs recorded at acceptible quality. Then again it might just all be junk. How many tomes have these sorts of tracks eventually ended up on new CD versions of albums, you get all excited and go buy it and on hearing the previously unrealeased track think 'Yeah, I can see why they left that off originally'? -
It's all good except for "Use Somebody." That song is such a buzz kill.
Did it a few times in my last band, went down well for us. Guess it depends on the audience and the delivery. Marv's original list looks OK to me if it's a pub full of mixed ages. I quite like a bit of diversity myself in a covers band if you can pull it off, some bands can't. Make the songs your own. I'm guessing this is a female vocalist, if not then as Steve K mentioned a couple of them could be a struggle.

Do they have cash converters in Holland? Seriously if we have any Dutch members in the area (the Ahoy's in Rotterdam isn't it or have I misremembered?) then all the usual secondhand/pawn shops are a good start.

Beth Hart did an album with Joe Bonamassa last year (I think) that's was very blues/country roots. I just wondered if that might be what you were thinking of but I know nothing of Del Ray (apart from one slightly tedious song on Jools Holland) so maybe she's been Bonamassering as well
-
I heard she'd collaborated with Joe Bonnamosa (probably spelt that wrong) and this what heralded the "going back to the roots" phase. She's still bloody awful. And has crazy eyes. Just keeping the cynicism alive for you.
You're not confusing her with Beth Hart are you?

So you have to use a Thunderbird or you dont get the job
KevB replied to grimbeaver's topic in General Discussion
I had heard of them vaguely around the time they were gigging first time round, mainly a support act but don't recall actually seeing them. I didn't know that Buchannon had been in the band originally until there was some publicity about them when reforming a few years back. As far as I can see the only reason for the T-Bird stipulation is that the guy who is being replaced was playing one, it wasn't a particular 'feature' of the band. Decent gig though all in all, congrats to the OP and hope he has some fun on the mini tour. -
I've really stripped down over the years. I don't think I ever owned more than 6 at the same time and I thought that was too much. I now own 4 but would seriously probably only gig 3 of them, the fourth (Squier P special) is fine for keeping around for quick bedroom practice session. Of the 3 really decent ones I never take more than 2 to a gig and its usually the same 2 so decent quality bass number 3 spends months at a time in a case under the bed which is a bit ridiculous. However it was the first 'name' bass I bought so it does carry some memories.

What is your favourite piece of music featuring a precision bass?
KevB replied to M-N-Y's topic in General Discussion
It's what they did best, they did a lot of support slots. I had a brief "chat"with their singer/guiatrist John Reid(??) for a while years ago. He said they became known for blowing away the headliners which I believed - until he said that included Slade in '78 - which just didn't happen - I was there.
Sorry to hear that Gordon Rowley had passed away. As you said in an earlier post he was a fine player and visually commanding on stage. Strife were just a bit before my time but I did see him play in Nightwing in 1981. Very striking with that huge mane of red hair flying around as he played. As for my fave P bass lines well there are dozens of them and many bands have already been listed. However, here's a P bass sound that (although it may be tweaked with an effect perhaps?) I've always liked and in particular scroll to the cool riff at 5:40. Also of interest is that it is Ian Anderson playing this bassline. John Glascock (another fine player) was too ill to manage more than 2 or 3 tracks on the album and Anderson did the rest. Glascock died not too long after from a heart condition: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuM-yatN0pI -
[sub]To the OP, I started out with a D110 unit too (still have it somewhere in case of emergencies) but then found a JV unit that was much more sophisticated in what it could do and had the 'Vintage Synths' card (plus 3 others) installed as an expansion board. This card has some pretty decent Moog emulations as well as Oberheims, Junos etc. Works fine with my PK5's. [/sub] [sub]The JV unit is like this one;[/sub] [sub]http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Roland-JV1080-Sound-Module-/300653661520?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Pro_Audio_Synthesisers_CV&hash=item46005acd50[/sub] [sub]The vintage synth card is this one;[/sub] [sub]http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Roland-SR-JV80-04-Vintage-Synth-Board-JV1080-JV2080-JV1010-etc-/180804570882?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Pro_Audio_Synthesisers_CV&hash=item2a18cacf02[/sub]
