1. I was going to post a clip of Northern Lights quite early in this thread but then when I looked around for examples it seemed they were all on a twin neck that doesn't look like a ric at all (John Birch or similar maybe?). I'd assumed it was a ric from the studio sound but presumably it wasn't. Great bassline all the same.
2. Here's one just for Bilbo... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HHr3Ub8Jm4&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL5AA4C3701FBD30D3
3.
We play soft-rock/pop/indie covers. Other people (I'm one of them) would choose a band name that gives promoters and audiences some sort of idea of the music we play. So - what do we think, folks?
Yep - 'Tired Old Sh*te' it is then
4. Aussie Floyd must have really hiked their prices up, it was about £27 to see them do the whole of The Wall plus a few additional songs tacked on the end in 2009. They did a greatest hits gig at same venue in 2010 but I didn't go so don't know what price that was.
5. Not seen BF but did see Australian PF twice before BF existed. I got the impression that some members of BF were in fact defectors from Australian show but that might have changed now. If it is the case I'd expect a very high standard.
6. It's because they're modern. In another 20 or 30 years time they'll be great and whoever is modern then will be crap. I thought everyone knew this. It's just the way we are.
7.
Actually thinking about it some more a condition of winning should be that you are prepared to perform one of your songs there and then at the awards. So if you win you pop up on stage to collect your award with the minimum of fuss and then you show us why you are deserving of that award.
I'm not sure I agree with this. Would you prefer someone accepting an acting Oscar to then be obliged to re-enact some part from the film they've just got the award for?
8.
Fair enough. I think the point about all of this is that the 'Outstanding Contribution' thing means nothing.
This was at the back of my mind in my original post but probably didn't put it across very well. By habitually including such awards at events it inevitably devalues them which shouldn't be the case - an outstanding contribution should be just that. It's like 'lifetime achievement award' has got to the point in some cases that it just means 'you're still alive then?'. If there are no clear candidates just drop it until an artist more universally acknowledged comes to the fore. You might only give one out every ten years but it will be meaningful. I happily admit to hardly ever watching awards shows even in genres that I have an interest in such as music or film.
9. 'Montezuma's Revenge Burst' perhaps?
10.
Are you honestly going to try and claim that 24 million album sales and two decades in the musical public consciousness that Blur haven't made a significant change to British popular music? You might not like them, but for once I'm happy to go along with the Brit awards on this one. It's irrefutable.
I'm pretty ambivalent about them tbh, they just never came across to me as a band with anything like the influence I'd associate with an 'outstanding contribution' award that's all. Probably just in a genre that I'd not bother with much so don't hear the subsequent bands who'd cite them as an influence I expect.
11. Is the band you mean Pete? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6SAs1MFhBw
12.
I think it was the millions of albums that they sold.
Ahh I see. I thought that's what the silver/gold/platinum album things were for. Maybe they can rename it 'outstanding contribution to music sales' award in future.
13. Did anyone actually find out what their outstanding contribution to music is in the end or not then?
14. The subject came up recently on here when someone was offered a gig that stipulated the bass player had to own a Gibson T-Bird but that subsequently turned out to be Marseilles so in theory yes we can all still apply! I got to hear the latest UFO album last night and in truth it's not that great to be honest...
15. Yep, I'd feel I was letting the other band members down by not helping clear the PA and other communal gear. I guess that's the life you have if you don't make it and don't have a squadron of roadies at your disposal...
16. Could be partly psychosomatic because you know the gig is tonight and the nerves are kicking in a bit? Turn up, do your best and don't worry about it. They can't knock your commitment at least.
17. The guy playing bass with X-UFO in the original post isn't ex UFO at all but did play with Michael Shenker for several years. I've no idea who the bass player will be in the genuine UFO's tour next month, it seems unclear from the official website. I'd be happy with the guy who stood in for the last tour (promoting 'The Visitor') but can't recall his name. I got to hear the latest album 'Seven Deadly' last night, not bad but far from a classic. If they pick the best 2 or 3 songs from it and fill the rest of the set with classics and fan faves then it'll be a decent gig. On the basis of the youtube clips I wouldn't pay to go see X-UFO I'm afraid.
18. I've always been in covers bands so obviously I'm quite replaceable, I'd be slightly delusional to think otherwise. Curiously though of all the genuine gigging bands I've been in I've actually only been replaced in one of them, shortly followed by 2 other band members from what I later heard.
19. He didn't play with them on the last tour at all. The last tour I did see him play on he was a bit wayward, playing itself not too bad but clearly out of it, Mogg was definitely getting quite annoyed with him by the end of the set. He seems to have sadly degenerated further, I'd totally forgotten about his guest slot with MSG at HV. The band's official site doesn't feature a bass player in the lineup at all, last tour had some blond guy from the USA guesting and he was excellent. The real UFO play UK shows next month, would be very surprised to see Way even making it as a guest.
20. [sub]Enjoy your first gig, it will absolutely flash by and you'll wonder where the time went. I started way too late in life and that's my big regret. Convinced myself for years that I wasn't high enough standard to gig and should have been out there 10 years before I did it seriously.[/sub]
21. I think if the original bassline was, for example, a sideboard then I'd probably be nonchalantly leaning against it rather than sat on top of it swinging my legs against the drinks cabinet. Does this help?
22.
What would've been hilarious is if someone did get in contact with the deceased relatives, and they just said something along the lines of "F*ck it, its of no use to us, its yours" Liam
You mean via a ouija board or psychic or something?
23.
Walk on By for me too. My fave Stranglers track and a regular on my IPod journey to work. Great song ( obv by Bacharach), great bass, great guitar solo, it just has everything
+1, one of the best cover versions ever. From when JJ comes in to the 'blurry bass notes' stuff over the extended keys solo it just smacks of someone confident and at the top of their game. Nice n Sleazy is also a belter both for the line itself and tone.
24.
Not sure if "You're The One That I Want" is in the original score but the movie soundtrack version has a great bassline.
That's the only one I ever learned from it as someone said they might need it for a jam session (never got to play in the end though!) Wouldn't say it was especially easy but a nice line as you say.
25. There had been many 'moments' before this and many after but I always recall the first time I listended to Zep's In Through The Out Door album. The song 'In The Evening' has two of them, first when Plant finally comes in with the opening line after a long long buildup. Then later just as Page starts his solo he kind of launches into it with the most over the top racket that sounds either like some huge piece of machinery cranking into life or something being dropped down the stairs. But it works.
