1. Started off with Aardvark's self titled album then moved on to Barclay James Harvest and now going to dabble with a bit of Blues Traveller as I'm chronically unfamiliar with their stuff but I like a bit of harp now and again.
2. That's my point, if the original CD keeps getting handed round after the initial sale then the artist gets 1 lot of royalties. If the CD ends up on a file sharing site then the artist gets the same. In terms of how much the artist has made it doesn't matter how many copies there are. Then it's down to guesswork as to how many of those people who have it might have bought it from scratch if it wasn't otherwise available. I've bought lots of things secondhand I wouldn't have paid full new price for and that includes music.
3.
It might be technically illegal to rip CDs to a hard drive, but how does that deprive musicians of income if the CD has been legitimately purchased? Unless we think it's fair to pay once for a CD and once more for a download for our iPods. Personally, I don't.
Not read the whole thread but this also then brings up the subject of the second hand market. CD bought once, artist gets their cut. Subsequently sold on, artist gets nothing. Are we all immoral if we buy second hand units?
4. On the subject of Cream I think a lot of people (admittedly of a certain age) would recognise 'Badge' just from the bassline alone without necessarily knowing the name of the song. Moondance was clearly ommitted from the list just incase Bilbo was browsig the NME

6. Having been forced off my bike on way home last night and horribly spraining my right wrist it looks like I'll be using neither pick nor fingers for a couple of weeks at least
7. Never got the whole 'fingers only' argument and I've had a few interesting discussions with far more talented players than me about it. I'd say I wasn't a 'real' bass player if I wasn't playing with other musicians to be more pertinet than what method I happen to employ to make a string vibrate.
8. Well someone finally picked it up for start price with seconds to go. So Louis now has to pay fees to eBay and possibly Paypal too depending on how the purchase is made. Way to go hot shot.
9. I assumed it was probably one of these, maybe inspired by The Ox? Just for clarification I found a link; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfBvoDsA_kE
10. Only about 15 mins to go, which one of us is going to crack first and actually put a bid in then?
11. I think also featured in the same old TOTP episode as that XTC song there was a band called Liverpool Express and the lead singer/bass player appeared to have a bass that was a Fender neck attached to a Thunderbird type body, or was this actually an obscure Fender model I've forgotten about?
12. If they are happy doing the 'ahhs and oohs' type vocal backing then; Mr Blue Sky - serious choral stuff going on toward the end. Also check out things that bands have done live with choirs that aren't on the original versions. Thinking of stuff like 'Question' by Moody Blues.
13. We did our little 2 man act yesterday with backing tracks to assembled 100 or so residents and other invited guests to our own street party. Several people taking photos but not seen any yet. We got though no more than 2 or 3 songs and there was a sudden heavy shower but it only lasted 10 mins or so then cleared and rest of the day was fone. I'd bought a gazebo so we stayed pretty dry, just a bit of rain got to the floor subs and wedge monitors but it all carried on working OK. No RCD but no lives lost. Several people came up to me later and said how great it was to have live music, made a difference to the overall atmosphere.
14. Just listening to Clockwork Angels at the moment. The download I have lists 'Headlong Flight' as track 0 so is this song actually on the regular release or not? there are 12 tracks including HF though BU2B part 2 is a bit of a throwaway. There are a few more songs running at over 6 mins in addition to HF. Quite liking 'The Anarchist' at the moment. Seven Cities Of Gold has some good moments as well. Overall the geneal sound and production is pretty similar to Snakes and Arrows. I think what is letting recent Rush releases down is Geddy's singing. He's hitting the notes but it just sounds a bitstrained and the approach to a lot of songs is so similar (both here and on S&A) that a lot of songs become a bit homogeneous. It makes it a bit of a relief when a song like 'The Wreckers' comes up with a less complex sound and more laid back feel so his voice comes through clearer. Overrall a decent effort though. May post more thoughts after a few more listens.
15. Afternoon gig on the bank holiday Monday. Offered to provide live music for a street party so I've ended up having to bribe a mate to join me in a duo set with backing tracks. At least it will only be 100 yards from my house so no travel involved and I can enjoy a beer or three between sets. No permanent band at the moment so at least it gives me chance to wheel the bass rig out for an afternoon.
16. How about this - it's quicker than SHA but fits the pattern reasonably well;
17.
1967, at the ripe old age of 9, my first ever gig, Quo Darlington Civic. God knows how many times I've seen them. Apart from all the Big Fat Mama's etc, Unspoken Words, Gerdundula, A Year has gone, Railroad, wonderful wonderful stuff. Would be really great to see the original 5 again. Karl.
I can't see them getting Roy Lynes back at this stage
18. Dance music was never my thing but I remember 'I Feel Love' coming out and the impact it had, nothing sounded quite like it. Georgio Moroder mainly responsible for the whole sequencing thing on it I think and Summer's voice is the icing on the cake..
19. I stopped at 'takes 25 minutes'....
20.
Me and the drums are wetting ourselves as the guy can't sing a note.. not remotely close to one.... I am crying with laughter and can't keep the song together..so I bend down by my cab pretending I can't hear it so I can turn my back.. He never looks back which is just as well. he seems oblivious to us hardly keeping it together... in truth, we can't..!! The guy carries on with his rock god pose for the whole song... and we are dying.. tears and everything, my sides ache.. He turns round at the end to ask how was it for us...!! Bless him... still one of the funniest things ever in music for me...
But then he formed The Smiths and went on to have a solo career so who's laughing now eh?
21. Once auditioned for a band that were doing more modern/indie type stuff of the time that I fancied a go at as I'd been doing classic rock in previous two bands. So I got a list to learn, thought I made a decent job of the basslines in the time given and turned up. They had failed to book a rehearsal room and it ended up being in one band members living room. I recall there being at least 2 if not 3 guitarists involved and potentially 2 lead vox, one male and one female. Except the male singer was busy organising his wedding so didn't turn up. Then it transpired that the drummer who turned up wasn't actually a band member but another audition candidate, they were auditioning a rhythm section from scratch who didn't even know each other! After a few songs it was becoming uncomfortably clear that for the majority of the songs I seemed to know the structure and form of the songs better than the actual band themselves. I went through it all with gritted teeth and left as they had other people lined up to look at. I had to stop on the way home, pull the car over and text them to let them know I wasn't going to join even if they asked me and just go with someone else. Months later I was still seeing want ads for musicians for what could only have been the same band.
22. Think I'll be bailing on this too for much same reasons as WOT. I really only went last time to hear all of Moving Pictures done as a 'suite'. Even if they did all of Signals (which was rumoured at one point) I couldn't justify those prices. I'll probably nip to the Diamond later this year and catch Bravado for less than a tenner instead
23.
I once banged the guitarist's ex on a rehearsal room floor. That was awkward.
I think the normal etiquette would have been to wait until the rest of the band had packed their gear up though...
24. Make the kids start hauling in backline and setting the PA up, they'll soon lose interest and ask to be left at home.
