There are some nice ocatves in 'Paranoid' that I am struggling to get up to speed. The band I've just joined does a cover of this so I'm gonna have to get my finger out. Literally!! (Did I mention I was in a band? I think I may have alluded to it in passing, lol )
It's great to put it in once you've mastered it but you'd be amazed how many covers bands don't bother and just stick to the root in that section!

Don't wish to hijack the thread but if anyone's interested in a P bass special I have one up for grabs at the moment; http://basschat.co.uk/topic/180678-squier-precision-special-l150-collected-or-short-delivery/page__hl__squier__fromsearch__1

I think Duck's beyond worrying what anyone thinks of him now...
No. Something this beautiful would be wasted on the Beatles
The irony being that 'Something' is indeed a Beatles bassline which uses....root/octave

Yes I heard that too. There was a period where he effectively left the band as he wasn't interested in carrying on without Ozzy. I'm not sure if it is 100% Geezer on H&H or MR albums but whoever it is can lay down a bassline! Bob Daisley was involved with Ozzy's band around that time so I'd be surprised if it was him. Craig Gruber (another ex Rainbow man) was involved while Geezer was away but it is possible that any lines laid down by other players on H&H demos were then replaced by Geezer's own playing when he came back into the band just before proper recording sessions began or so I've read.
To ignore the post-Ozzy material is to wilfully turn your back on some truly amazing music and for what purpose?
Indeed, any sensible rock bass player should listen to some of the post Ozzy era for the basslines alone, how about the bassline for 'Die Young' for instance? quality playing in my book.
Oh, and the last 2 or 3 Ozzy Sabbath albums are a bit pony too, there is no sacred lineup, Never Say Die is ****.
I quite like some of the songs on NSD, a more experimental jazzy feel with some good keyboard work from Don Airey. For a band falling apart it wasn't a bad effort.

It's the sort of sound I usually associate with J Taylor in Duran Duran stuff (choruses on Rio and Hungry Like The Wolf) or am I thinking of another pattern?

Bill Withers' 'Lovely Day' King Crimson's '21st Century Schizoid Man' -
The album immediately after Heaven & Hell (Mob Rules) tends to be rather overlooked but has some cracking tunes and strong performance from Dio. The first couple of albums with Tony Martin on vocals (Eternal idol, Headless Cross) worth a look too. The album they made with Gillan on vox (Born Again) is a mixed affair but some good stuff included. Some of the later stuff sounds a bit tired and lacking in ideas to me (Tyr, Cross Purposes, Forbidden). Edit - wrote this before Doc J nipped in!

I've done occasional oasis covers in jams or with a band with only 1 guitar and it's not easy, as has been said they tended to put a lot of guitar layers on the recordings and had plenty of guitars on stage for live work. There are things like the Akai Unibass but ideally that needs to be routed through a separate amp & cab for full effect. Other alternative might be midi pedals triggering a synth guitar sound while yer man solos away. Either way you'll get the short straw and will need more gear, more expense. Is it worth it for just a couple of songs?

Yes - Heart of the Sunrise. Doff my cap to you if you get it nailed and would be surprised if anyone in the audience actually recognised it anyway How about the main riff from Spirit of Radio? -
Squier P bass special Had it a few years but purchase of US P deluxe makes this surplus. Nice bass, very playable and in good nick other than v small ding on back (see enlarged pic at bottom). Used regularly for home noodling but that's about it. Specs are as in link at bottom, think this exact model discontinued, closest equiv now around £220 new. Please note my version doesn't have colour matched headstock for some reason even though that was in specs when I ordered it. Photobucket not uploading headstock pics for some reason, will update this when I get that sorted or just PM me if interested and will send extra pics direct with serial number. Shame they weren't a bit more rigorous with record keeping but probably understandable, they must have churned out thousands of instruments per year. Unfortunately Fender parts are often easily interchangeable so after sales questionnaires to establish a database isn't going to be vastly useful either, eg must be hundreds of necks that are no longer attached to the same body they came out of the factory on.

A couple from a little festival a few weeks back where I stood in for someone as a favour to a mate. The provided Laney backline was a nightmare but struggled through. Came off my bike a few days after this and haven't been able to play since due to a badly sprained wrist. Looking at the pics makes me realise a. my god I've piled on the pounds over the last couple of years and b. I think that hair's got to go... -
Excellent news. Maybe initially get a few songs tight with the band, find open mic/jam sessions and do those to gain confidence whilst working up a full set for pub gigs.
-
I have nearly all of those 13 albums. This is, of course, where any remote similarities between me and the gedster well and truly ends, as anyone who has heard me play knows.
-
From the disproportionate number of fluffs, chokes and duffers I reckon a lot of people walking in the Dog&Duck would immediately think 'Hello, has Kev joined another band?' within a few notes...am I famous yet then?

I def don't wear my bass at correct height, though not far off. I knew all about the 'same strap adjustment as when sitting' and every time I've done it when I stand up it feels like it's up round my armpits. So I must in theory be actually slightly lower than ideal for my preferred strap length when playing standing up. I feel very little change in my hand positions when going from sitting to standing so I doubt I'm very much lower than ideal. I did once suffer the same symptoms as the OP at the end of a long set during one of our encores. It was embarassing as it was a song where the singer briefly introduced the band and we did a very short solo each. My hand had locked up so much I just had to signal him to leave me out and move on to the next band member. It was absolutley 100% due down to me overplaying and digging in too much while playing fingerstyle and not being relaxed enough (it was a bit of ahigh profile gig for us at the time even though it was just a pub). I got my hand loosened up just enough to grip a pick and finish the last song that way. Never happened since though and I recall another bass player recently telling me after I'd played how he liked my 'light touch' so I guess I have changed style a bit as I've matured!

Cheating or not the technology is there and it won't go away (hello Cheryl!). I think I did in fact refer to it as a 'cheat box' in my first post to this thread. It does open up an argument though. For many bands the fact that the singer can actually sing is a bit of a bonus. For live work it is only half the story. I don't want to sound demeaning but, since it's one of our own members bands here, I'd say that for a band like Dick Venom that the actual technical quality of the lead singer is maybe less than half the story. It's also clearly about a very strong look and engagement with the audience. Now, consider the scenario of putting a band together and it's down to choosing a front man that sings like an angel but has the stage presence of a wardrobe or someone that's Jagger and Morrissey and Ian Anderson and god knows who else charismatic godsend that makes all the rest of you look less like knuckle draggers BUT he needs just a bit of help keeping in pitch. What to do?

'Funky music for the soul' Then I look down the 'favourite songs' list and I see that perennial soul classic that is... All Right Now Seriously, it looks a good layout on the whole. I don't know if it has been changed since some of the original comments came out but when I looked the musicians order now has singers at the top which is as it should be. For the time being the way that the focus can be shifted on to the twins in the photos is just re order how those band shots come around so that the one of the girls always comes up first. They are a big selling point really.

A mate of mine goes out as a solo act with backing tracks but also does small band work. His system is mainly Electro-Voice (subs and tops on each side with crossovers) and I must say they sounded extremely good. Due to the use of hard wearing plastic on the cab bodies they were also pretty light to handle too. Can't recall which powered mixer he used though.

I think this'll go over the heads of most of his intended targets but good on him for showing that some 'merkins can do a bit of sarcasm/irony.
