1.
Robannas, Birmingham?
That's not the one, i'm in Walsall (just down the road) but funnily enough they have those rigs at a studio near me.
2.
I've been playing in a new band of late. More of that to follow. The rehearsal rooms are fairly well equipped. The one we've been in the last few weeks has an Ampeg SVT450H into an EBS 8x10.
You don't happen to be in West Midlands, England do you? It's just there's a studio near me who uses those bass rigs.
3. Thanks for the replies guys, going on holiday later today, so i'll speak to Steve when i'm back. I want to tell him politely to pull his act together and get ready for recording, he isn't willing to put the time and effort in when two of us are I think we're inclined to take my drums back and drop him.
4. He is a good mate to both of us, but we don't want to be held back musically. If he's willing to take things more seriously then as we're writing more music he can catch up and get his drumming up to scratch. But yes, he has had enough chances, we've even rewrote and rearranged things just so he can drum for it, or even scrapped songs that are do-able on guitar, bass and singable for us but he can't keep up with the drumming.
5. First off, I'm not sure if this is the write area, but it doesn't belong in gear and not in the marketplace. If it doesn't belong here, can a mod please move it? Thanks. WARNING: This is a very long post. Two years ago when I just started to play guitar I was interested in forming a band. I put the word around school and found myself a decent bassist (call him adam) and my cousin (call him steve and who also had recently started playing guitar). We were going for steve on rhythm guitar/vocals, me on lead guitar/backing, adam on bass/backing vocals. All we needed now was a drummer. Found out a lad in my year had been taking drum lessons so I asked him if he'd like to join and he agreed. So we had our lineup. Every year, my school gets all the people interested in playing together and makes bands and puts on a gig at a local pub. We played that, then adam left due to moving house. No hard feelings, but that now left us without a bassist. As I owned a bass already, I started to take it seriously and took up bass in the band. Now as a three piece, we did a few gigs and the school show again this year which was last month (which went down pretty well). Now here's the catch... I'm a half decent drummer, a music teacher at school is a wicked bass player, my drummer wanted to sing a cover of ''green day - basketcase''. We got my music teacher to fill in on bass and got an awesome reaction from the crowd. Since then, my drummer has been fixated on getting a new bass player, me drumming and him taking over lead vocals. Me and steve aren't very happy, as i'm much more comfortable on bass and he wants to carry on with the vocals (plus the chances of us finding a bass player aren't very high). People have even told me i'm a better drummer than him (not trying to sound bigheaded, just a matter of fact). I've even left my kit at his house for him to practice and get better (as he doesn't own a kit and his only time to practice was at drum lessons and playing as a band once a week). My drumkit was sitting in different corners of his garage when I was at his place yesterday, gathering dust. Also, we have a collection of material wrote that we're planning of recording in the next few months. Me and steve have been having talks of me recording the drum/bass tracks, and him doing guitar/vocal. Overall, this will make our recorded songs sound much better. It's been dawning on us for a while now, as me and steve have progressed with singing/guitar/bass and my drummer has been given my kit to use and isn't even taking the opportunity. What would you do in my position? Drop him, possibly find a new drummer and (if not possible) record our material with just me and steve? Or convince him to up his game? I know that this won't happen overnight, but I think it's fair that if he isn't willing to put the effort in then me and steve should be liable to drop him and take my drumkit back. He isn't exactly a great drummer anyway, and we're having to scrap covers or rewrite our material to a suitable level for him. What would you guys do in my position? TL;DR Been together for two years as a three piece, drummer won't up his game for recording of our first original tracks, given him my drumkit to practice with and hasn't even touched it. I could probably record drum/bass tracks and steve record guitar/vocal for our release. Having to scrap lots of cover ideas/rewrite songs suitable to his level. Not expecting him to be John Bonham overnight but he's had everything handed to him and isn't seizing the opportunity. Do we drop him or ask him to up his game?
6. My great uncle played guitar for a living. My grandmother was (said to be) a very good piano player. Other than that, there's no musical heritage in my family. I was exposed to a lot of classic rock, prog rock, folk, drum and bass and motown from a young age. However, my cousin is also in the same situation (just 6 weeks younger than me, same musical exposure and heritage, parents had no musical ability whatsoever). He is quite the guitarist, with me quite the bass player (so people say). Is that an insight into inheritence jumping generations?
7. Someone asked for a list of gear, so hear it is: Me(bass): Carlsbro 65watt amp Precision bass guitar Woolly mammoth clone fuzz pedal NYC big muff Guitarist and vocalist: Cruiser les paul Marshall 100watt amp (forgot the model) Vocal amplification (forgot brand/model) ZVEX fuzz factory (borrowed from me for practice sessions) Delay pedal Drummer: Fairly standard kit: snare, two rack toms, floor tom, bass drum, crash and ride cymbal, hi-hat Bearing in mind the guitarist has a 100watt amp in comparison to my 65watt bass amp, it is running nowhere near full volume, we set everything around the drummer's volume
8. Thanks for all the replies guys, I've got a practice session tomorrow with them so i'll be trying these out - also a new woolly mammoth clone being delivered, so we shall see how that goes
9. Ever get it sounding right roger ?
10. In my main band we do mainly covers, and have decided to have a go at two Oasis songs, ''Hello'' and ''I hope, I think, I know'' (links are below). We get through them easily enough, but at the end of each, our guitarist/vocalist takes a guitar solo. We've never really had a problem with sounding thin, but whenever he stops the open chords and starts the lead it just really drops out. We're doing the usual things, lots of open hi-hats and heavy cymbal usage, digging into the bass line, not just pumping out root notes. It's only with these songs we are struggling with the sound. 11. Fender Medium - but I only ever use a pick when I play with my punk band. It's hard enough for heavy playing but just enough bend to make playing comfortable and easy.
12. 16 year old bass player seeking a new band, into any blues or rock but mainly classic rock in the vein of Led Zep/Deep Purple. Two years gigging experience, looking for a covers band but also willing to write own material in conjunction with other members. Based in Willenhall, West Midlands.
13. By 15 watts I mean a 15 watt guitar amp was enough to keep up with my drummer, on 6-8. I was using a 25 watt bass amp pretty much cranked to keep up with the drummer/line 6 15 watt amp.
14. Budget is up to £150, but if a bargain is present I can push to £200. Based in West Midlands, England. Bearing in mind the drums won't be mic'd and this is just for practice, where we are playing gigs the gear is provided along with a PA system.
15. My guitarist plays through a Marshall 100watt 2x12'' speaker amp, my drummer plays moderately loud, but at school we had to use Line 6 Spider IV 15 watt and that kept up with our drummer. I don't want my bass being drowned out due to lack of power and being able to keep up with one guitarist, one drummer and a vocal amp, possibly a moniter wedge. Not used for gigs, just band practice
