Hope it's a good 'un. Personally I prefer jetglo to pretty much any other colour for a 4003, just looks *right* somehow. I picked up a 2000 model on eBay in 2002, it was barely played in and I still have it. It's seen the odd knock through the years but still a fine instrument.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised on my recent trip to Skiathos that in one resort where I went to a BBQ there was a full band playing (drums/guitar/bass/keys player who doubled on sax with guitarist and/or bassist singing). I noticed they were all very young and probably doing it for beer money. Definitely not the norm in Med hol locations. Mind you the 'one man and a cd player' approach isn't new - another charity gig I saw had various people turning up and doing a short set. One of them was an old German fella who got up with a little barrel organ round his neck , fed the bit of paper in and proceeded to sing over it as he turned the handle, sort of 18th century kareoke!

I'm not defending Love in any way but it isn't quite that simple. Love already had a touring BB band without Brian, Jardine and David Marks. These three members were added in for a reunion tour which has now finished. The intention was always that the stripped down (profitable) version of the band would then do some more shows later and this band doesn't include those members, it's just business. As I said I'm not defending Love and it is always upsetting seeing the founder and main talent in a band lose control over it but then I get quite uncomfortable watching Brian anyway in his current state of health.

Never mind the bass gimmickery, what a bloody awful tone for the lead guitar break...

£120....for a box.....with a hole in it? Yes I know someone is now going to quote the price of MIA P bass and go 'for a piece of wood with four bits of wire attached'. So I've done it for you

I know what you mean Bilbo and to some extent I agree but it's all on a slippery slope and it's where to draw the line. I'm sure some sequences by bands are triggered at the start of songs and the drummer has to work to a click track to make sure they are in the right place when some fancy noises appear at a point during the song. Others are triggered once but in 'real time' and then forgotten about and others, like midi bass pedals as used by Rush, Yes, Genesis and whoever should rightly be considered an instrument in themselves, they are no different in that mode to an oversized short keyboard that is being played 'fingerstyle' but with a foot. Hit the wrong pedal and you'll get as bum a note as hitting the wrong string, I've done it often enough

For the relatively unitiated what does this set up do that isn't possible with a midi pickup on a regular bass then routed through whatever midi devices one wanted or could afford?
-
I have this vision of Bottom E coming on stage and unplugging Rush on their next tour because they have gone beyond his guidelines of acceptable levels of samples and pre-recorded triggered bits

After one of my old bands broke up two of the members (who were a couple) started downloading midi backing tracks and adding in extra layers themselves and went out as a guitar/vocal duo. Absolutely swamped with work, far more gigs than the full band could ever get. Part of it was they could undercut full bands but also they could physically fit into such a smaller playing area it opened up lots of potential venues that were too small for the full band to fit in. Not really for me though I must admit. I did do a duo to backing tracks for a jubilee street party earlier this year and I have to say it was an extra level of discipline to make sure I got the timing/cues correct, no kind of flexibility with backing tracks, no nodding to the drummer for another go around or anything.

Mixed feelings over Flower Kings, some stuff I find good and on other occasions I can barely listen to them. Last album was OK though so had they been playing a little closer to home I would have liked to have seen them at least once. Which songs from the recent album did they do?
As I understand it, Fender used to be quite aggressive in protecting their brand until they realised there's more money to be made licensing after-market parts and presumably copies, so I don't think JH should be painted in quite such negative terms. Anyway, I'm still stuck with the problem of selling this bass via ebay so might take the approach of selling the component parts (which themselves are worth around the asking price) and sending them attached to a curiously shaped piece of wood? All suggestions welcome C
Not sure about this. My take on it with Fender was that they realised they weren't in a position to successfully sue anyone because the actual shapes of bodies etc hadn't been copyrighted in sufficient detail. The whole 'lawsuit bass' name is in some ways a myth. So they might as well effectively make their own cheaper 'copies' in the first place and thus the licensing of products manufactured overseas came about. Sort of 'If you can't beat 'em, join 'em' mentality. Ric went the whole opposite way with much tighter copyrights, retained exclusive manufacturing to one country and as such remain more of a cottage industry than the likes of Fender or Gibson.

Just thought I'd mention that I got both my US Fenders (see pic below) untried via eBay though I did pick both up in person I was not really in a position to play them through any gear, just a cursory look over. Hence I wouldn't really say I genuinely 'tried before I bought' and I was pretty much committed to it as an eBay transaction anyway. However they both played extremely well from the off and have had minimal tweaking from a luthier since. Other players that have tried them at jams etc seem to think they play well also. All mass manufacturers are going to have some QC issues and Fender are probably no worse than most given the huge number of instruments they churn out. For MIA as the OP's preference then yes I'd say buy second hand but preferably from somewhere you can give it the once over first.
I was in contact with a guy who was doing the transcriptions for a book some years back. It was all done and ready to go but then Andy Powell apparently had some issues and it never happened.
Well if it's never going to get published persuade him to knock up some GuitarPro files then

Hi Luke and welcome to the forum. This topic has been brought up many times on the site and it may be worth your while cruising around the archives using the 'search' function to pick up on old threads. You will get many and varies responses I assure you. I once had a reissue Bison and I have to say it was the bass that stayed in my collection the shortest. Never got on ewith it at all. I'm not the tallest person in the world and the headstock end always seemed miles away from a comfy playing position for me. As for fenders it's a whole can of worms. I have 2 US Fenders from 2003 and I think they are well made and good quality instruments. However I bought them 2nd hand way under what their new price would be. I really don't think I'd pay out the current rate for a brand new Fender from US.

Yep, preparation and enthusiasm are the main things. However don't be afraid to turn them down if they don't match your expectations.

I was talking to a bloke on my recent holiday in Skiathos who was appearing as a duo. Even the 'full band' is only ever a trio at full strength. Basically the sort of money they get in these holiday resorts means that anything more than a trio and you might as well be playing for nothing.

Are there any decent music books for WA with good bass transcriptions? I don't recall seeing one and though I've tried to work out a few bits of some of their songs it would be nice to have something more definitive.

Bought misc. equipment from 4ebayers in a week...
KevB replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
I must say after reading eBay related threads on here recently I entered into putting a cheap bass of mine up for sale with slight trepidation. Someone bought it for a sensible price and picked it up in person, paid cash. Couldn't have been easier. All I got on bc were adolescent tyre kickers and 'Can you wait until the end of the month'- this for a £130 bass! -
Saw these guys last Friday in Derby. Not that big a fan of the artist in question though I like his 'hit' stuff, they were certainly worth a look; http://www.toopetty.co.uk/

First gig you went to - who was in the band?
Wishbone Ash, Fairfield Halls Croydon. 1975 or thereabouts. With my schoolmate Barry Butler. His brother picked us up afterwards. Happy days.
A threesome at that age? It's interesting so many listing Gillan. I think it shows partly that a lot of us on here are of an age where we were just getting into rock in late 70's/early 80's and that Gillan were a bloody hard working band. I've posted this before but indeed it was Gillan for me too.Torme had just been sacked and Gers was in by the time I saw them in 1981. Tickets were about £5 and there were 2 support acts, Nightwing with the late Gordon Rowley on bass followed by Budgie (Burke Shelley) and finally Gillan with the unmistakeable McCoy. -

I had a quick dabble through 'Fear Of The Dark' by Maiden for a laugh as a mate's band had covered it the night before (along with 'Fool For Your Loving' coincidentally) and I'd never played it. They aren't actually a classic rock cover band at all but they throw a few in to keep things ticking along between their own original material.

I usually only buy bass related things when I'm in a gigging band but I couldn't resist this and it has accompanied me to the last couple of jam sessions... http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3a6ce1ef10 It was the 'may contain bum notes' smallprint that sold me...

Check his web site - around 100 official gig bookings for 2012, probably doing something right
