They probably started by picking up a right hander and just flipped it over,so got used to playing that way. I'm sure that if you start that way then it becomes as 'natural' as playing in standard tuning.
That's what I've always assumed was the case with Lee Pomeroy and now that he actually plays left handed basses he still plays with the strings inverted! Rainbow. Actually Blackmore in Purple too, other guitarists have come into the band but they all had their own styles so none of them sound any way similar.

I find it strangely soulless actually. Didn't do much for me I'm afraid. Well crafted pop song you say? check this one out (OK it sounds dated but PYT does in its own way too); http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXq81-cGJr4
Yes it was. It's the local for one of the guitarists, hence the gig. It's been done up recently and the layout changed so the drums setup in front of the fireplace rather than trying to squeeze in between the bench seats. Still pretty bizarre and the early time slot doesn't make things any less weird.
Not played there for a couple of years, must pop over one Sunday and have a look, maybe next time your covers band is on, what's the band's name? I think the last time I played there a fairly well respected local bass player told me in the interval that he liked the way I 'commanded my part of the stage'. I think it was his way of saying that although my playing was a bit sh*t at least I looked the part

I didn't even know The Boardwalk had gone, though come to think of it the last time I saw a band in Sheff that I would have expected to play The Boardwalk they were on somewhere else (Plug?) so it probably explains it.
I acually live in Leicester, where the chance to even see good gear is limited. Is there anywhere BCers would recommend near me (Nottingham, Birmingham)?
Sadly there's not much in Nottingham but if you go down to the Hockley area there's Fuzz, Sound Control and also here; http://www.drumandguitar.co.uk/ Which is where shep (our own pantherairsoft) used to work for a while. Probably as big a range of basses as anywhere else in Nottm. Fuzz also has some nice stuff in (very small shop however) and if you want to try a ric they usually have one in. The prices are eye watering though.
Another gig with my covers band and a weird one. First the gig was in the late afternoon starting at 6.00 and finishing just after 8.0 so I was back home just before 9.00. It's a regular slot on Sundays at the pub and consequently the regular audience doesn't turn up until just before the first set, which means that until 5.55 the venue is pretty much deserted and we're stood around thinking that the gig is going to be a disaster.
Sounds like the Air Hostess at Tollerton. Played there myself in the past, it does seem like a weird time slot especially when its sunny outside. Bit of a pokey little room as well but had some good gigs there.
Ahh, my first bass, 30 years ago was a Columbus, a Jazz, not a P bass. Fond memories.
Me too, and almost as long ago! I was in a school rock band and didn't play anything, just sang. When we all finally went our separate ways I bought the bass players bass off him for £30. He'd butchered it and put a couple of Dimarzio P bass pick ups in between the original 2 jazz pickups, one of which didn't work anymore anyway. Years later I restored it back to a proper jazz config with some decent PU's and a mighty mite neck (the original one was becoming severely bowed and the truss rod was shot). It ended up as a present for my niece who was just starting to play in a band. Ironically she's gone the other way and now is a lead vocalist. I think the jazz has finally retired. Still worth less than the sum of its replaced parts! The only other Columbus I've had was a Gibson EB0 copy which i got just to see how I'd get on with short scale basses but it quickly got sold on to another new starter.
I've spoke to Rich a few times since he's been awol. He's Ok, just very busy.
Yep he's fine, see him most Sundays at the jam session in Beeston.

Best Beatles song to play in a pub band?
KevB replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
Considering mercuryl is in a guitar/bass duo I would assume that serious rearrangement is a given. I've got to say, I'm struggling trying to imagine some of the songs suggested with such a limited line-up.
There's an acoustic duo round Nottingham that only do Beatles songs and they get regular gigs; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4mZWPDwHcE&feature=related -
Best Beatles song to play in a pub band?
KevB replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
Whichever ones you choose, concentrate on the vocals first. There are a number of (particularly early) tunes that are pretty high pitched so if you are going to do them in original keys make sure you are comfortable singing them first before tackling the music. Nothing quite as painful as a badly sung Beatles tune. As a regular at jam sessions I've heard some howlers and some of them have been me! -
So I went to see Jack Bruce & His Big Blues Band Last Night...
KevB replied to Schnozzalee's topic in General Discussion
I saw him about 10 years ago as part of a package deal line-up that also included Glenn Hughes and Jack was clearly past his best even then. Poor health and age has taken its toll sadly and I think people will have to take it into consideration to avoid disappointment. Still a legend though. Still can't play the live version of Crossroads quite like he did... -
How about 'Cross Eyed Mary' from Tull's Aqualung album?

I bought my US Fenders as standard no nonsense workhorses, going to have to think seriously about their insurance values at this rate!

The Musical Box - The Lamb... - The Apollo this Thursday
KevB replied to ead's topic in General Discussion
Just as a side note has anyone here seen The Watch playing as a Genesis tribute? I'm not that big a fan of Genesis but they are playing reasonably locally so I might give it a go if they are worth seeing. I have a couple of albums of theirs playing their own material and that does sound uncannily like early Genesis. -
I've just had a track sent to me by someone looking for a bass player, it's an original tune and he's played guitar, synth and bass on it with a drummer. Although it is interesting it is beginning to look uncomfortably like it might be technically beyond me which is a bit embarassing as I've not had problems in my covers bands up to now. I guess it has really rammed home to me my general averageness on the instrument. I'm raising it as one of the issues is related to Peteb and Linus27's discussion above. The drums are in 4/4 but what is being played over the top of them isn't and it varies slightly even in repeated sections. I started by 'locking in' to the drums only to find I was slowly getting further and further out with what is being played over the top of them, bit of a nightmare. Going to perservere with it though for a while yet.

Here's one from Yes's 90125 album that gets rather overlooked, nice bass work from Squire and the band are as tight as a gnat's chuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hr_hLxisXso

Fender Jazz and Rickenbacker have one night stand...
KevB replied to TPTroll's topic in General Discussion
Could be worse. They might have modelled it on a Warwick or something. -
I'd expect more information than that if it was covers, not much excuse. It also gives an inkling as to how organised as a band they are. If they have been together a long time then they could have fallen into a pattern where everyone knows the stuff and they assume someone new coming in will too or they could have thrown you in as a test. What would worry me would be that it might also show how disorganised they might be at working up new material and I'd be cautious about joining even if offered it. I once turned aband down before they even offered me the job. I might have failed anyway but didn't give them time to make the decision. I thought they were so shambolic in their approach that I pulled over in the car on my way home and texted them that they could rule me out before they got back to me.

Hi Sallie. I wasn't much younger than you when I first tried noodling around on bass and I didn't play proper gigs until I was well into my 30's so it's never too late to start! welcome aboard.

Now THIS is what a Rick should sound like!
KevB replied to Cosmo Valdemar's topic in General Discussion
The studio version is definitely Rick. My 4003 with the tone cap engaged and everything full on pretty much nails that tone, it's joyous.
As I mentioned in my earlier post I'd assumed it was too but then why go to the trouble of always apparently playing it live on a different instrument? there are 2 or 3 youtube clips which I think are from around the time the original was recorded and they are all on a twin neck. Maybe they always played the song live immediately after a song that needed the twin neck and he didn't want to swap basses? -
Just assume their entire stock is dodgy, confiscate the lot and make them start again from scratch. Any instruments that can't be reunited with proper owners to be auctioned off and the money donated to a music based charity.
When Matt played with Glenn, Glenn was using a Yamaha bass, not the Nash, that came later when he was with Bonamassa and Black Country Communion. Nowdays Glenn endorses Laney.
Think I've seen Glenn doing a solo show using the Nash but it was probably around the time of BCC or just before, is it a reddish colour and quite road worn? He also used Vigiers for a while, think it was late 90's, early 2000's?
