Now I'm confused. I interpret from Laimis reply that it actually is one bass on the soundtrack but it's not him ('it's not anything like my bass was sounding at least') but he recognises himself from the video ('yes it was me playing') ie yes that is footage of him playing the tune but the sound is someone else. Or maybe I'm misinterpreting him? Not that I'm too bothered either way since I didn't take part in it. Come to think of it I'm not that wild about the tune either

Got to be a single track after the intitial semi acoustic. Check out the right hands of those where you can see it, most aren't synch'd properly, ie it's not their actual playing you are listening to. If I were one of them I'd be quite annoyed and ask for my contribution to be removed (unless it was my actual line that was used for the whole thing). They are effectively miming and they might not even be aware of it unless whoever put the comp together got in touch with them all to ask if it was OK with them.

'Fender....Erudite and Classy...no you don't get a f***ing stand with it'

It's not so much anti bass solo as anti solo bass. Different thing. Egan's following the melody and working round it with the other players accompanying him. Not doing the meaningless mechanical and repetitious w***ery that passes itself off as soloing far too often basically.

This one came up for the first time in a long time

Sort of but she was a regular round the working men's clubs of West Yorkshire (she's a Bradford lass) before she was known nationally as well as doing uncredited stuff for the BBC. Got her break as a solo artist on Rocket Records which is where Eltie comes in (did the same for Judie Tzuke too). -
I recently depped for a band hired to play a birthday gig. And flatly refused to play the birthday boy's request for 'Zombie' by the Cranberries. I'd like know that I can leave each gig with at least some integrity intact.
You can be safe in the knowledge that you probably left that gig looking like an unprofessional prima donna tit.

I was channel hopping and tuned in just in time to hear mark owen singing the word 'pwesidents' and promptly switched over. Anyone wanting to see Pomeroy up close and personal should check out It Bites on tour before they finally implode for good. They have a new album out soon and presumably will tour to promote it next year.

Those words to the Vauxhall chevette song disturbingly scan fairly well to the tune of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town...

Years ago I bought a job lot of authentic Rickenbacker strings for my 4003 and a couple of the packs were ground wound, thought it might take some of the edge off the ric sound. I still have a set on a cheapo Aria semi acoustic. They did seem like a decent compromise between flats and rounds.

I use a combo, I'd have to turn it upside down for it to be on the floor

For general 2 or 3 times a month gigging it's not a problem for me. If we had to travel I'd just take a half day or full day holiday. It's my hobby, I can't expect my employer to change it's rules for me. They don't pay much but do give relatively generous annual leave which in theory I can take when I like as long as I give adequate notice. There are some limited times of year where it is clearly stated I'm not supposed to take casual time off. I was approached by a band recently who were talking about possibly touring the USA for a couple of months once they had a firm reliable lineup but I had to turn them down. That band was never going to pay my mortgage and bills, my employer's salary does.

I don't know if it is still there but I went to the Millenium stadium about 6 or 7 yrs ago and there was a little music shop up a narrow street close to the stadium, it had a few basses in the basement. I recall noodling about on a secondhand overwater (might have been fretless) but can't remember the shop name.

[sup]Don't know if it counts as a 'gig' as such (but I got paid for it) but it was first stint this year as stand in at a jam session as a house band member for me yesterday. The main guy (guitar/vox) was struggling with his voice so i ended up pulling out various songs I'd sung lead on in the past, some from quite a while ago and i could barely remember the words. It all seemed to go down OK despite a lower than usual turn out (which meant I ended up playing more sets than usual). Landlord seemed happy enough, just tick it off as job done, until next week when I'll get all sweaty palmed at obscure stuff I don't know being chucked at me to jam along to once again!.[/sup]

Good song, excellent album. The various members of MSP grew up together and are bonded in a way that goes beyond musicianship so picking on particular members for what they can or can't do pretty much misses the point to me, and I'm not that big a fan of the band. Maybe Wire has developed the slightly larger than life stage persona to act as a foil for the fact that Bradfield's doing a lot of work vocally/musically can't really move around that much?

With a user name like 'Seashell' I was rather hoping for the bikini and flower-in-hair look...maybe nexttime?

[sup]Someone in the house band at the local jam session used a Shine violin bass for a while. Considering they are on the cheap end of the market I was impressed at the quality of the tone through a quite modestly priced Hartke rig with no real processing involved. I think the only problem with that model is that people just naturally expect you to start rattling off Beatles tunes as if that was the only music permitted to be played on them![/sup]

From next Sunday I'm depping for a few weeks in the house band at a local jam. The main player in the trio is basically a walking jukebox so I'll be cramming in as much stuff this week as I possibly can from 60's onwards pop blues soul rock etc. Did it last year and it's a real test trying to transcribe stuff I've barely learned original vs of into new keys on the spot!
And that song's chorus is a classic example! Well, I've got till next weeks rehearsal to get on top of it. Sticking it on in the car's out as the missus uses it for work, however I do have the iPod for the walk to and from work so I'll listen till I'm sick of them.
Yeah it's a bit like that but if you're not singing as loud as the lead vox it's amazing how many times you can get away with switching the 'feel' and 'need' around, half the time the audience won't notice at all believe me! At least the words fit in with the notes being played, other songs that floor me are when there is a big difference in the rhythm of what is being played compared with being sung - Geddy, Squire, Macca, Sting all brilliant at it.

Another here doing bv's and occasional lead vox. As it happens I do bv's on Hundred Mile High City, not too bad once you've gone through it a few times. The ones I find hardest are songs with repeats which are similar but with slight variations. One on the back burner for next rehearsal is A Thousand Trees (Stereophonics). Not a song I grew up with and on first couple of listens sounds an absolute bugger to remember properly. I could barely keep up with it singing along without playing anything *and* with the words in front of me! I may just have to pass this on to the guitar player/lead vox man, I can use the excuse that I already sing lead on another song we do by the same band

Fine singer is Glenn when he's not off his t*ts on some substance or other. Saw him last year doing small club gigs with his own band in between the release of the 2 BCC albums, then saw him this year with BCC at High Voltage, one of the best acts of the day. Almost popped down to see him doing his chat/book plugging thing this month but something else came up.

That'd probably be Adrian, decent lad. Sorry I couldn't get to the 'hound that night, I'm in most weekends that I'm not gigging or rehearsing.

What will probably be our last gig before the new year so don't miss out on a last chance for various pointing and sniggering opportunities as we flounder throug some of the new covers we've been working up. Where is it then I hear you ask... The Midland Hotel Stapleford Nottingham NG9 7AZ We'll be on around 9:30. An eclectic mix of covers, though the midland tend to go for a rockier set so expect it to err on the loud and raucous side.
I went to Glasgow... simply to see Cheap Trick! Loved the fact that CT's set was made up of all sorts of older stuff (+the obligatory IWYTWM) and it was a pleasure to hear TP's 12 string in the flesh so to speak. Deep Purple were OK but I was bored out of my tree with solos! Many, many years since I've been to a gig where EVERY band member did a solo spot (or two)... what is that all about. Enjoyed the old stuff but have to confess that the highlight was the classical bits and the fiddle/violin v guitar duel. Long live Cheap Trick.
CT's set was very heavily biased to the Dream Police album (they did about 5 tracks from it in B'ham and two of them are long songs) but it's one of their best so no great harm I guess. DP have done solo spots for years and these days they are probably needed as much to give Gillan's voice a rest as anything else.
As per the early doors-Ray Manzarek,The KB player performed all the bass lines with his lefthand
RM indeed did all the bass stuff live and studio for forst couple of albums, later it was a mixture. Mostly RM on keys but they also used session bass players on some albums. Considering it wasn't even the same keyboard he was using for the bass parts compared with the lead lines it really looks quite impressive!

Went to Birmingham last night. No Speed King in the current set list I'm afraid, though they did play an obscurity from the In Rock album, Hard Lovin Man. Gillan's voice was initially not too bad but definitely deteriorated as the set went on, well he is technically a pensioner these days after all After initially getting lousy seats overlooking flight cases at the side of the stage I got in full moaning mode at the box office, getting me and my mate on the arena floor on the first row though we were stuck in a corner. It was on Rog's side of the stage though so it was interesting to see him work close up. He even got a little solo spot and although he didn't convince me that bass guitar is much of a solo instrument (no bass player has yet) it was nice to see a solo that was melodic, not over long and DID NOT INCLUDE A SINGLE SLAPPED OR POPPED NOTE. Thanks for that Rog
