1. This needs putting in the dedicated 'Basses for sale' section - hopefully one of the mods will move it over for you. And photos speak volumes so I'd recommend updating with some pics.
2. I'd almost forgotten about it but one of the earliest basses I ever owned was a white Washburn that was quite similar to the one in this thread, it also had status pickups. I think it was an XS-8 and I've never seen another one in the flesh since. Virtually gave it away in p-x for a cheapo electro-acoustic.
3. And for those of you with a mind to adding other 'improvements' to a ric..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1977-RICKENBACKE...=item4aae1fb9a9 Well, just don't do it. OK
4. The most I've paid for a bass is just over £800 for a mint ric 4003 around 2002. I don't honestly think I'll ever pay any more than that for a bass again now as I haven't in the intervening years when I had the money to do it with.
5. If it were mine I'd certainly be tempted to put the original bridge back on - Badass III's aren't very easy to come by at the moment so you would probably get a good price for your BAIII on eBay on its own.
6.
Messing about with files is the whole point of fitting a replacement bridge on a Fender, because it means you have a chance of getting the strings to line up with the pickup pole pieces and run parallel to the sides of the neck. The Badass does make a difference to the sound compared with the BBT. Whether or not it is better is entirely subjective.
I didn't have any problems lining up the strings with the pre cut BAIII as there are 3 grooves cut into each saddle which gave enough choice for me but maybe I was just lucky. They provided a second set of uncut saddles with the BAIII anyway for those that preferred to DIY.
7. Hmmm that headstock. If you start off with the profile of Quickdraw MGraw and throw in a bit of daffy duck...
8. I'd heard that before Lozz which is another reason I've not bothered putting one on my precision. It looks like BAIII's are getting hard to come by anyway. Also my P is not particularly 'standard' as it's a US deluxe with the extra MM type pickup and is active with bass, treble and mid range boosts all available so it's enough of a beast to tame as it is without throwing a BA into the mix as well!
9. My Fenders are both string thru so if I got one for the precision it'd be BAIII anyway, none of that messing about with files. I'm not convinced replacing the BBOT on it would make that much difference anyway even though I have a BA on my jazz.
10. Naw, it goes back to when people had to send documents via the phone lines and you just got a dark piece of paper at the other end. 'Did you get the diagrams I sent you'....'Sorry mate it just came out as a shadow fax at our end, can you try again?'
11. Glad you got it sorted, straight on to Gates of Delerium then eh?
12. I think I have the Windham Hill retrospective somewhere in my CD collection, must dig it out some time though I recall them being a bit 'elevator music' for my usual tastes. If you don't know about it this is a really good source of reviews of prog albums to get an idea of the better stuff by bands you aren't familiar with; http://www.progarchives.com/
13.
There are 2 sizes of 9V rechargeable: 8.4V and 9.6V. The 8.4V have a larger capacity, but deliver a lower voltage.
Without a multimeter how do you know which is which? Is there an online resource somewhere with manufacturer's specs?
14. I think that Justice bass looks a bit 'Woolworths' TBH but each to their own...
15.
Yep. The output starts distorting and the volume gets lower and lower. Incidentally Christhammer - 9V rechargeable batteries are only 7.2V when fully charged so it's not a great idea using them in a bass. I use bog standard Duracell ones and change them every 6 months or so.
I have 2X 9v rechargables in my precision deluxe and I can't detect any difference in performance compared with 2 standard non-recharge types. I guess it depends how much voltage you really need to drive the preamp circuit?
16. Probably too much delegating, I've had this in bands before. In the short term I'd hire a trustworthy sound engineer and make it clear to the band that they don't interfere. If you get a sound you like and follow what the engineer does and can trust yourselves to follow his/her plan in future you can probably do it yourselves in future. With your set up I think I'd be looking to at least sound check within an hour unless something went seriously wrong.
17. The current band I've joined have 'Matchbox' in their set. However I keep sneaking in bits of the bass line from 'Pride & Joy' cos it's such a good one! Congrats to Dave on getting back to gigging. Met him at a couple of Northampton bass bashes in the old days and he's a thoroughly decent bloke.
18. 'Money' is quite fun to play though isn't it? I suppoose we should respect Waters for not writing overly complicated bass lines just because he was the bass player but sticking to the golden rule of creating what was right for the song.
19. I was recently asked to do one for my new band but my first reaction was 'we really don't need this'. However the web designer, who also happens to be the drummer, wouldn't let it drop so I rattled off a quick paragraph in hopefully a lighthearted veign. I can't see how it can possibly get us gigs or be of any real interest to the public at all. I guess it just fills up a bit of space that might otherwise be taken up by some pointless photo or something. I've never done one for any previous bands.
20. I had one of the reissues, don't know which Mk it was but this is going back about 7 years. It was matt black and I quickly realised it wasn't the bass for me and moved it on for a very minimal loss as it was still mint. I couldn't get to grips with the way the neck sat in relation to the body so it seemed like the headstock end was miles away compared with a jazz or a P bass. I have the same problem with Thunderbirds, I guess you get used to it but overrall I found it a disappointment and was happy to see it goe elsewhere.
21. A good quality picture of a Rickenfaker with 'F**K YOU JOHN HALL' under it. And sell them on eBay.
22.
The chord sequences? Have you heard the chord sequences to most songs?:
I wouldn't say the melodies of 'My Sweet Lord' and 'He's So Fine' are all that similar but the chord progression is and Harrison got pulled up for it, however I'm no expert.
23.
So what's the etiquette then, from a legal perspective? Say if I liked one I'd come up with - what level of tweaking, reengineering or rewriting, won't see you hauled over the coals for infringing some copyright or other?
Don't know if there is a formal etiquette as such but as we seem to become more of a litigeous society I'd be quite careful. Irrespective of any legalities I just know if I wrote something really close to another well known song it'd grate at the back of mind so much I'd rather just bin it. From what little I've read it seems to be chord sequences that gets jumped on, if the pattern is very similar (even if transposed to a different key) it becomes a target, even if the styles and arrangements are really quite different. If it can happen to someone like George Harrison it can happen to any of us!
24. There are plenty of examples of songs sounding like other ones that get all the way to being released. Some get pulled up and it goes to court but lots of times it doesn't. The longer music is around and the more people are 'creating' the more likely it is to happen, like the monkeys writing Shakespeare scenario.
25.
I play in a trio and i'm happy enough with that.
Nowhere to hide in a 3 piece! I'm finding that out the hard way in the new band
