1. Stick with the GuitarPro version, it's what I learned it from (and I'm pretty average). Although it looks a bit daunting at first glance if you break it down and take it steady it will fall into place. I still can't play it and sing it at the same time though!
2. I'm with JTUK, often a case of not what you know as who you know with jam sessions. You will definitely do yourself a favour by turning up more regularly. Only a matter of time before someone doesn't show up and if you are there and can get them out of a hole they should remember it.
3.
Based on that one track/performance I'm jealous.
They headlined a 3 act evening (supports were Delta Maid and Alice Gold) for £10 a ticket. This is the way to get folks out supporting live music. I was there fairly early so ended up about 12 feet away from them It's a bit poppier than my usual taste but most of the songs have strong melodies. They have only broken through to larger audiences more recently but have been around about 10 years so are fairly experienced performers. I wasn't aware of them until the latest album came out this year.
4. I think this band do at least one LA song in their set; http://www.myspace.com/arizonaclassicrock The bass player always seems very friendly at gigs so maybe you could contact him via their MySpace site for tips?
5.
Having actually seen them live myself (the missus is a fan) I couldn't agree less. I wouldn't go & see them again. EDIT: One thing that blew me away was the Pierces acoustic performance. Loved it.
Went to see The Pierces at a small venue a few weeks back, full electric set though. Excellent value for money, solid harmonies.
6. My last band was primarily blues influenced. Probably one of the reasons I lasted 6 months They can get a bit samey so as much variety within the confines of what still sounds 'bluesy' as possible. Plenty of more modern artists than the old classic players to look at too. One song I wasn't familiar with that was in our set list was Joe Bonamassa's 'Asking Around For You', a slow blues but not the stereotypical 12 bar format;
7. Get with it Bilbo. People don't wave cigarette lighters anymore. They wave some hideously expensive phone type gadget that has an animated picture of a cigarette lighter app on it
8.
Not read whole thread but does anyone know of any recordings Clutterbuck has made? I hear his youtube things a lot but don't know what he does when he is not on a trade stand?
Apparently has been a member of Dare (Darren Wharton's band) but not clear from wiki entry which album, if any, Nigel C played on. I'm guessing he was an early member so maybe Out Of The Silence or Blood From Stone? purely guessing.
9. I hadn't heard much Govt Mule up until a year or so ago. They turned out to be much more musically adventurous than I'd expected, though still firmly rooted in the blues I found them refreshing to listen to. Don't recall seeing any UK live dates for them though which is a shame, seems one of those bands that really comes into its own in a live setting.
10. I think I've used a Commando at a jam session a long time ago, it was fine but I preferred the 715 combo that's still at the heart of my usual rig. Commandos are pretty cheap to pick up S/H and maybe Trace is a little bit out of vogue at the moment so very good value.
11. Reformed apparently after neither Hawkins brothers subsequent projects (Stone Gods, Hot Leg) really took off. Probably just short of cash.
12. I'm sure that has a lot to do with it, someone has already pointed out that he's been in professional gigging bands with recording contracts. I doubt what he's doing in that vid has as much as 1% crossover to his style of playing in a band capacity yet we're all quick of the mark with a slagging. He's at a demo looking to attract attention for his employers and that's about it. I guess we can discuss whether that style is going to atract people or drive them away but to extrapolate this vid to his whole universe as a player seems a bit much. Maybe he's just saying 'Look at the stick these Rotosounds can take' for all we know.
13. They should really audition both you and the other guy next week to be fair unless they are on a really tight time schedule. I've done at least 2 auditions where me and the guy either before or after me nodded to each other as we changed over in the queue
14.
Off topic a tadge, I enjoyed the coverage of Jethro Tull and interview with Ian Anderson from the 1970 IOW Festival.
Would love to have seen them at this time in their careers, in fact any time up to the late 70's. Just a reminder;
15.
Caravan will be a struggle for me: while they're one of my favourite prog acts, there's not really enough of them to call it Caravan apart from the songs they sign. Even Doug Boyle's jumped ship these days, and he really made a difference. The songs themselves and Geoff Richardson on hedge clippers might win the day though. Agree with you re Lizzy. VHBros are great - I've only heard one album but it's good stuff: look for their single "Miracle" on youtube.
Well it's official, tickets are booked so me and a mate are coming down the smoke to take in Sunday's High Volt Fest. We'll probably be snoozing in a beer tent somewhere by early evening...
16. Already done in 'Eavis Is Racist' thread last week
17. Yes, definitely check it out in a non playing capacity for a session or two. Some of these things get a bit cliquey or there's political stuff going on that isn't obvious at first visit. Getting the lay of the land in advance can mean avoiding saying the wrong thing to the wrong person. I have every admiration for people prepared to do a house band week in week out. You often end up playing the same thing with the same person week in week out. Considering how long some of them go on for they are not well paid gigs in reality. I sometimes fill in for one on a Sunday afternoon. You need to be there at 2pm to set up gear, house band does about half an hour as a warm up and then you are trying to sort out other people, ends at 7pm and you start clearing gear away. I always enjoy it but I couldn't do it every week, especially taking up most of a Sunday.
18. A mate of mine went to see the Rush tribute 'Bravado' last Friday. They obviously knew that pretty much all their audience would have been to see the real band recently so they deliberately avoided as much of the official tour set list as possible, think they only did Spirit Of Radio which overlapped which is a pretty cool thing to be able to do.
19. Shame the interviewer didn't have balls to finish with 'But you do know that the bass sound out front's been a bit sh*t in large venues for the last few tours?'
20.
Hmm... Good point, I suppose. I saw Rush too, and got more than my money's worth (from the second row of Block A2 in front of Geddy). For a weekend ticket, and if showtime scheduling allows, I'd get Slash, Caravan, Von Hertzen Bros on Saturday; Curved Air, Tull and BCC on Sunday. I'm considering it now - I'll see what happens when show timing is announced.
I'm happy to give the whole Saturday a miss, just not enough there for me. Never a big Priest fan, Lizzy have been little more than a tribute act since reforming and on the prog stage there's really only Caravan I'd be bothered about. I think Spock's Beard were better with Neal Morse present but I find his solo stuff a bit dreary irrespective of the overtly religious content. So on balance I'd rather see SB without Morse on the Sunday than the man himself on the Sat. BJH don't really grab me much, looks suspiciously 'almost tribute' as Lizzy on the face of it. Not familiar with Von Hertzen Bros so maybe I'm missing something there but won't lose sleep over it, for me personally Sunday wins hands down. For Sun I think gates open 12pm and rumour was that The Enid (2nd on bill at prog stage) would be on around 2pm so guessing first bands around 12:30-1pm? Curfews are 11pm Sat and 10:30pm Sun
21.
High Voltage is a bit disappointing this year: neither headliner is enough of a draw for me, and there's just about enough good acts across both days to fill up one day's festival-going. Good to see that the Prog Stage is being billed higher than the metal stage this year - and they've changed the layout of the stages as well.
I'm only really thinking of going for the prog stage even though I've seen most of the acts before (in the case of Tull probably too many times) and Black Country Communion on the main stage. For the number of bands potentially viewable it still doesn't seem too bad value to me, considering I paid that sort of money just to see Rush. It's just a bit weird that as it has turned out neither headliner is that big a deal for me, could sneak away early and miss the mass exodus I guess.
22. I'm thinking of going down to the Sunday High Voltage Festival this year so I might get to see DT again. Only saw them once before on Metropolis II tour and I have to say it all rather washed over me, not one of my fave bands.
23. 'All digital' eh? probably means that all 20 tracks are already available on Demonoid or similar for nowt. Still, any new angle to try and prise hard earned cash from the public should be investigated I suppose. Hope the songs are a bit better than some of them last time round though.
24.
Afford? About £1.50 lol But probably around £400 is what I could stretch to which wouldn't get me far in Fenderland
I got my 2004 US jazz with S1 switching for less than £400 on eBay, including the hard case. It was about 5 yrs ago but it shows that there are good deals out there.
