1.
I wouldn't boil coated strings. Or strings with any plastic due too how much tension will be on it could make reliability a issue. Boiling strings does work it varies. I find rounds last forever with me anyhow and I hate bright strings so now only use flats. If you like fresh strings, The strings direct own brand are cheap and rumour has it made by rotosound when I used rounds I found them decent enough.
I find that Rotosounds are basically dead the moment they come out of the packet (every ones I've tried have been that way at least. Chances are they wouldn't fit on the Dingwall unfortunately. I use Elixirs on my other bass and have no issues with how long they last (ages) but find any other brand is dying within a month.
For coated strings, the only ones I found any use at all were Elixirs. I don't see the logic in trying to boil a coated sring. If the coating has been compromised boiling isn't going to put it back together.
I agree. I've tried a lot of different string types and eventually settled on Elixirs as they just keep on going. I wouldn't try boiling them as I imagine the coating wouldn't like it but mostly because there isn't really any need to! I've boiled the strings earlier (Payson Stainless Steels) and they actually sound good as new at the moment. I'm sceptical of how long they will be that way though.
2. Advertising for a singer for a funk/rock type originals band a while back. Someone turned up, hadn't listened to what we had sent him for an idea of our music and proceeded to say that he only every really does pop-punk. Also back when I was looking for a band I put up an ad and had about 5/6 replies. One of which actually just said "We need bass player". Not only were they miles outside of where I was looking for, they also were way off the criteria I was looking for. I said originals band trying to get something a bit unusual and they were a rock cover band.
3.
Thank you very much for doing that , is that picture of the tape measure with the protective base in place ? I just got an Email from Mono & they reckon it will fit easily ?
That picture is with the tape measure pressing on the bottom of the gig bag (whilst keeping the bag and measure straight up.) Will take one with the bass in it tomorrow for you. To be honest. I reckon it would fit if I'm honest but obviously it's an investment!
4.
I got shot of a lot of mine through the Recycling forum There's plenty of people on here who are happy to take a set of deadened rounds of you!
I've decided to go down this route - link down below for those interested http://basschat.co.uk/topic/276158-used-strings-6-sets/#entry2944545
5. My dishwasher is a sink (I'm old fashioned like that). I've never tried it previously partially cause I've heard it only revives them for a few days but my current strings are dead and I'm a bit skint really! I live a small flat and I can't say the girlfriend would be happy with the place smelling like methelated spirits. Wouldn't be great for my asthma either I imagine!
6. had a rummage through the cupboards and found 6 sets of strings. D'addario (pro steels I think) - 4 string set black threaded strings (couldn't figure out the brand) - 4 string set [s]DR Neons - pink/red (box said red but they're more pink) - 5 string set[/s] GONE D'addario (again, I think pro steels) - 2 5 string sets Elixir Stainless steel - 5 string set All of these are used so will not be mega fresh sounding. They will all have been cut for 34" Warwick 3-2 or 2-2 Happy to post for the cost of postage
7. My girlfriend named my ACG Gloria but it's not really stuck.
8. I've never boiled a set of strings before as I generally use coated strings but I'm contemplating trying it with an old set of Payson strings I have but they have a plastic ball end (is that what that bits called?) Just wondering if this would cause an issue...I don't really want melted plastic in my pots. Cameron
9. That seems like a hell of a lot of work to devalue a bass.
10.
Stunning!! Absolutely stunning!! The photos of this bass on the ACG website don't do it justice! The quality of the woods and craftmanship is more than evident in your photos. That's a really beautiful bass.
The pictures on the website really don't do it justice. That was my thought when I saw the bass for the first time. So many tiny little details that just make it a pleasure to play and to look at...probably why I keep it right next to the tv...something actually good to look at!
11.
Aye, but owing to the design of the Dingwall its overall length is little more than a standard scaled bass. Do you have any guitar shops close to you? It sounds like you really need to try a few manufactures, if you haven't already. I think the Mono Vertigo max length is 122cm, so that may bugger you for any Mono case. Serves you right for (presumably) inflicting a 36 inch scale length on a G string!
I just measured the Dingwall and it actually comes in at less overall length than my ACG (who'da thunk it?) I got the tape measure out and checked the mono. It looks like it is 122. There is a protective thing at the base of the bag that could be taken out and that'd mean height ways I would imagine it would fit easily albeit with slightly less protection at the bottom which isn't ideal.
12.
the most annoying one I've ever had is: "Me and my friend smoked too much weed earlier, and now I'm too high to drive." f*cking drummers....haha.
Was once in a band where the guitarists excuse was that he was trying to find someone to get weed. This was a band where I was 2/3 hours on a bus just to get there and only said this half an hour after rehearsal started. Incredible guitarist but unreliable as an old Alfa Romeo. In my current band we once had a rehearsal where the drummer was unbelievably tired (hungover is more like it) so we just rehearsed our songs in different genres minus drums. Turns out our tunes sound quite good reggae.
13. I'm not big on singlecuts but that's pretty nice looking. Purpleheart fretboard too...
14.
When I ran my own band, we never played so loud that I had to put earplugs in. I believe that is the optimum setup at which the OP is hinting.
This is where the argument comes in about low volumes being perfectly acceptable for a folk band but when it comes to a rock or metal band it just doesn't have the same impact at low volumes. I think regardless of genre there is always a point where can get too loud. I still can't see any negatives towards wearing ear plugs though. The scenario stated in the OP seems to really be aimed towards people who want to listen to the same volume regardless of ear protection. Which seems a rather amateurish mistake to me (I say that as someone who is very amateur!).
15. Wearing ear plugs increases hearing damage? I don't get it. I always play with ear plugs in and rarely have my volume above 3.
16. I use the Mono Vertigo for my Dingwall (37") and it fits with space to spare. Comfy on the shoulder too. I've also been able to fit a Genz Benz shuttle 9.0 with all the relevant cables in the bag.
17.
I would get a little triangular wedge made to fit in that gap and give you a thumb rest that's perpendicular to the strings!
It's a plan at some point if I ever find it too much of an issue. It only really bothers me when I'm playing mostly on the B string for long periods of time -which doesn't really happen that often in my band-.
18. I got 10. In all honesty, I've never really kept in the loop with Lemmys antics though so most of it was guess work.
19. I'm also curious as I'm thinking of starting lessons at a point when my finances are a bit more stable.
20. The angle of the pickups here mean that when using the low B string a lot sometimes you'll get a bit of a dent in your thumb from anchoring it on the pickup. I can't really complain too much keeping in mind the bas was designed for a pick player. I also hate pickguards on basses. The NG-2 is the only bass where I can stomach the pickguard. Saying that, I intend to -money permitting- add a third pickup and get rid of the pickguard.
21. I know there have been places in the past to donate old strings but as far as I can find out, they no longer accept donations? I've got a good few sets just lying around somewhere but have held off throwing them away for some reason. So what do you do with them? Edit : Apologies to the mods if this has already been covered in another thread. I couldn't find one when I had a search
22. Not a shock at all but sad indeed. He lived one hell of a life and left an even bigger influence.
