1. I can see why people don't like the zing of fresh strings but I hate when strings don't have that zing to them. As people have already said the little string noises will dissipate in a band setting but it doesn't hurt to get used to minimising it. Then you can decide if you want it or not. I like having it at times for making weird sounds with the envelope filter...
2. It really does depend on the song obviously but generally if I go for a tricky song it'll be about an hour or two. The last song I learned was Sequoia throne by Protest the Hero and I would say it took about 3 hours in total to learn (mostly spent on the tapping section) and about another hour or two to get reasonably decent sounding. I find the easiest way to learn songs is to just break it down as much as possible and then just connect all the sections.
3. The Classic was definitely my least favourite. I can't decide between the other two though.
4.
I don't really have a set style of bass that I like.. I like classic designs as much as I like coffee table basses There are a few features that instantly put me off a bass though: Single cuts, gold hardware, tort pickguards or signature basses spring to mind. Although I have seen basses with gold hardware, or tort pickguards that I thought looked nice... the same is yet to happen with a single cut design though.
I'm quite weird in the sense that I don't much like the shape of a jazz bass, gold hardware or basses that are painted but I have a huge soft spot for a white Jazz with gold hardware.
5.
Hooray a leader emerges! No soundcard at work but I will check it out tonight I'm tempted to upload mine that I did yesterday, but I haven't listened back to it yet to make sure it's not sh*t so maybe I'd better do that first...
If it makes you feel better I'm gonna try and upload something on Friday. Weirdly I reckon I'll get a better sound using my ipad to record audio from an amp than I will directly into Reaper
6.
Well I was noodling around with this in mind last night and may have recorded a little something to submit. ... didn't want to go first though in case no-one else entered and I ended up looking like a ninny
I wonder how many other people are thinking the same...
7. I use a B3K with my NG-2 and it sounds excellent. I've also previously used it with a Warwick Thumb I used to own and sounded even better with that. All of these were ran through a Genz Benz shuttle 9.0.
8.
Yet again older people speaking for a generation they don't understand. I come into this category but I want to be promoted and make as much money as possible. I really do not want to have a dead end job earning nothing but 'being satisfied with life'.
I agree with this. I would fall into the younger part of that generation and although I do agree that it's important for mental well-being to enjoy (or at least not detest) your job, the fact that the article states that we aren't interested in a job for life and that it isn't a motivating factor is pretty dim-witted.
9.
I already own and or would buy basses featured in my list but I'm man enough to admit that those things are not 'cool'.
I think your list only had about 3 things on it that I didn't find cool. Anything with a signature on it, high up basses and single cuts. Saying that. One of my basses is a signature but I got it mainly as it sounds damn good and I do have my bass fairly high up but mainly since its just comfiest that way. Holding basses really low looks even more daft to me.
10. I agree with the comment about the drum dynamics and so do the other members after talking to them about it. As far as the tightness thing goes we are spending each rehearsal playing to a click as well as doing it at home too. The overdub is going to be very far in the background just for the one section. For the most part we are keeping it quite raw but not 'too raw'.
11. It's working now. I enjoyed it. Gave me something to listen to while I done the dishes there
12. "This video is private" - Not letting me see it
13.
For me, the first two and a half minutes is a cracking little pop song - a bit like something you'd expect Stiff to have put out in the late 70's, early 80's. But then it just keeps going and doesn't really seem to know why - as if you have too many ideas and are trying to stuff them all into the one song. I'd also put the little guitar motif in from the start, very catchy, and is what makes the track for me.
I know what you mean, it's weird. When we were originally writing it we felt it was a bit long but we tried playing it shortened and it didn't feel right. It's all ideas I'm gonna chat about with the other chaps. Just at the point of finalising everything for recordings now.
14. Also, please ignore the bollocks that the guitarist is speaking into the mic at the start...he does that without us asking sometimes.
15. Sorry if I should have put this in a different section, I wasn't really sure since it's more about getting opinions than actually sharing my music. Basically my band is heading into record 4 songs in a months time and I'm basically just looking for opinions on one/some of the songs...just in-case there is anything that immediately stands out as bad to other people when they listen to it. We don't want to record songs then realise something is obviously wrong with them! The section where it goes a lot softer will have an overdubbed guitar chord sequence over it but can't do it at rehearsals since we only have the one guitarist. https://soundcloud.com/goon-and-the-kings/cross-the-line/s-SHlEg Recording isn't superb as it was done at rehearsal the other day and again, sorry if this is in the wrong section and feel free not to listen or to call us pish! Cameron
16. Will maybe pop along. Never been to 13th note yet surprisingly
17. Saw a few of this guys playing and never liked it much (not saying I'm any better!) but I do like that video!
18. This seems more like an idea I could get into. Question though. Is it allright to have more than one bass track? Reason I ask if I'm currently working on a melody type thing for my bands song but if I can't have the guitar track in the back I'd do the chords...doesn't really make sense otherwise! Edit : The title seems perfect to me!
19.
It does track great but I wouldn't be surprised if the signal of your bass after those 4 seconds was not loud enough to feed the octaver properly.
This is my thoughts on it. I don't have any issues with mine breaking up unless I'm already playing a really low note and trying to replicate the octave below that.
20. I don't know why but I quiet like it...
21.
Nope, you got it backward...OCD or not, the top one is ugly.
I find them both pretty ugly if I'm honest but I can't really speak...I really like the Warwick headstocks and people seem to hate them!
22.
I play a jazz and a precision though (both fivers) so what do I know?
It definitely is incredibly subjective and I knew that. On a similar note to yours. One of my basses is "coffee table" material and the other is bright yellow with dodgy frets so incredibly uncool in a lot of peoples books but I love them. I've always found 'traditional' shapes to be quite dull to look at and quite uncomfortable to play for me.
23. An incredibly similar thread popped up here last week if I recall correctly. Ibanez SR basses have really slim necks and considering the price of them the punch way above their weight IMO.
24. I tend to use the preamp on my bass to change what tone I'm going for and I use my amp to adjust ever so slightly. I actually sometimes use my amps eq section a little like a eq pedal. The footswitch has a switch for low boost, mid scoop and high boost so I use these a little like a stompbox for certain parts of songs. It's handy for slightly shaping the sound. I would say thought that if I used passive basses it would make more sense to use pedals to shape the tone...especially with things like the source audio EQ that can save different settings.
