1. I play a 5 string with everything. I just find it overall more comfortable to play and I like having the option of lower notes/being able to play the same notes but higher up the neck. Doing the latter gives the notes a different sound to my ears so it's a good thing to be able to have. 6 string necks are just a little thicker than what I find comfortable and the string spacing on 4 string basses is too much for me.
2. Can't say I find it any worse looking than a standard reliced guitar...
3. I like it here but I can't really say if I'll leave or not. I probably will at some point but don't really have any intention to. I don't really contribute that much anyway if I'm honest.
4. A few recent threads about live music being less popular than it used to and a few comments on said threads about the audiences generally being made up of people from a certain generation got me thinking. How many people here actively seek out new music? I don't really go out to see a lot of new bands locally but I will try and listen to local bands music when I can...I just happen to not like most of them hence why I barely see any of them. The bands that I do like from nearby I will go watch them play when I can. I do always try and listen to at least 5/6 new bands a week though, usually via Spotify/YouTube, internet radio or even just being given the cd.
5.
Some combination of: You play with a very clean sound and want plenty of headroom You feel safe knowing you've got the capacity to play 20-30% louder than you think/hope you will ever need to High power amps/cabs are relatively cheap so what the hell, why not
This is my reasoning for having a 900 watt amp. Plus it's the nicest sounding amp I've used and just happens to be pretty powerful...and portable.
6. There's a great pub in Glasgow that will be getting shut down next month according to a similar article I read yesterday. I'm basing this purely on my own experience in the last few years. Speaking as one of these 'youngsters' I think the reason a lot of these places aren't always filled up with people is that quite frankly they can be pretty expensive. The one I'm mostly thinking of was around £4:70 for a pint the last time I went in it. I don't mind spending extra at times but it's not something I can do regularly...especially considering how overrun the place is with Wetherspoons pubs. I think this has quite a bit to say about the majority of audiences being middle aged.
7. I haven't had experience of this but I've read a hell of a lot of people with the same experience you're having...
8. Also curious how much this will be price wise...seems pretty good that you can make your own 'toneprint' for it as I'd really be just using it always on and leaving it so not really any need to fiddle (not that much fiddling ever gets done with compressors on a gig).
9. I love mine if I'm honest. It is very grindy sounding but also really good for just adding a little bit of grit if you set it up right. It doesn't really do "warm" tones that well but that's not what I'm after with my sound so that doesn't bother me one bit. As far as keeping the sound in a band mix goes/low end loss. I don't have any issues using mine with a band. For an idea of it just adding a little bit of crunch - my Tesseract cover uses the B3K as well...ignore my shoddy playing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMM8AHFc63A
10. Cheers folks. Will have a read at that blog.
11. In just over a months time my band are going to be spending a few days in a studio and getting a 4 track EP type thing recorded and I'm just basically searching methods of promoting it. Quite frankly I'm clueless and not very good at this sort of stuff at the best of time so all experiences are a help. Cameron
12. I think it looks great. Super clean and simple looking
13. Curious to see how much this costs...could see myself shifting my Genz Benz for it if it's as good as the other Darkglass gear I've used.
14. If it wasn't for the fretboard inlay I would say it's the only Les Paul that I would describe as "pretty".
15. Quite a few Ibanez basses have this setup as far as I'm aware?
16. I have the pedaltrain mini and find the softcase does the job with no complaints. If you're wanting great protection I would go for a hard case though. As above, they aren't particularly padded but they aren't just cloth.
17.
I use my best / favourite bass for gigging and take a spare. After all it's what they were made for.
This. I only have 2 basses. Both of which I would consider brilliant. Certainly both of them are at a value where I would be rather unhappy if something bad happened to them. I just make sure it's supervised at all times.
18. When I got my first 'high end' bass I babied it for the full time I owned it. Eventually I realised that I bought the thing to play and enjoy. At the moment I use both of my basses as I would use any cheaper basses. I play them quite hard but onstage I'm not much of a mover so no real issues there other than accidentally hitting things (which I try not to do). I still take as much care of them as I can to avoid these things happening but it's not the end of the world if something does happen. If my bass gets a dent or a nick in it then it would annoy me for a while but as long as it does the job it's designed for I'm happy.
19. Music is what I listen to 99% of the time. If I'm completely honest, I'm extremely picky about vocals on songs which results me often listening to music trying to mentally block out the singer. I also listen to quite a lot of music that isn't sung in English meaning I can't really do anything about the lyrics other than google them. If it's a band where I like the vocals I'll usually listen to the lyrics and the music as a whole.
20. https://soundcloud.com/goon-and-the-kings/new-funk-one/s-c5Dmp This was recorded on a Zoom handheld recorder. Picks up everything really well I think. Disclaimer : If you end up listening please ignore the bit I haven't written yet.
21.
Recent convert to the Wal club - here's mine:
Woah...
22. As much as a tribute or cover band is my idea of the worst ever night out I do agree with what has been said (although not particularly how it has been said), if you don't like them don't go. Sadly it is much more profitable to play other peoples music than it is to write your own.
23. Sounds hellish to me but I suppose they're the ones making money from music and not me.
