As Si said. Buy what works for you. I've always found cheap distortions/overdrives to just not be usable in a live setting but Darkglass works amazingly (I'd say they count as boutique?) but on the other hand even the cheapest of reverb pedals is ideal for what I need.

Would fancy trying a 5 string set of these actually. I've been using Elixirs for years now and part of me wonders if there's anything better...haven't came across anything better yet!

My reason for justifying any purchases would be "I want it and I can afford it.".

I originally started because it looked fun. I often have days where I just can't be arsed playing. The reasons I still play are because it's the only thing I'm half decent at and every so often I have a little streak where I absolutely love it and want to do nothing else. I've never had that feeling with anything else before.

For an angry sound a Warwick Thumb would be my choice.

As far as tackling it goes I would say make sure you take it slow to begin with. Haven't played it for a year or so but found that if you rushed it even slightly it was a tricky one to just skim over the mistakes.

I would say Dingwall would have developed a fair amount more interest since Nolly (Periphery) started using them. I have his signature bass but not because of his signature... just because it's a fantastic bass. In all honesty I actually prefer it to the Afterburner 1 I had a while back. I think there are people who will go out and buy gear just because X has used it, although I think this is more common with guitarists.

So how many Peaveys is that now? A scary number I bet!

[/quote] Part of me can kind of understand that way of doing it...not saying I would audition like that but I can see it's positives. I know that a lot of what my end up doing comes from improvised jams so this naturally ends up in us just making stuff up at gigs every so often. I'm pretty sure its extremely unprofessional but it's fun so I don't really care I imagine it was to see how you would adapt under pressure and when you weren't prepared.

[/quote] Different styles and music has progressed so much since then. As far as the whole 20 vs 24 frets thing though. I only buy basses with 24 or more. not necessarily because I use the notes but more because to my eyes they look better and feel nicer to play.

I don't gig that often (generally only a couple every month). I only have 2 basses and because of public transport I can only really take one to each gig. Both of the basses I use are -what I would consider to be- extremely versatile so that makes needing a particular one not an issue. If I could have more basses then I certainly would but at the moment it's not meant to be!

Another vote for Elixirs. I seem to sweat battery acid or something and these are the only strings that seem to last more than a few weeks for me.

I'm not sure of the actual answer to your question but I had this issue when changing strap buttons. I just filled the hole with wood and then screwed in the smaller screw and its rock solid now.
