Using Basschat on phone is awesome, well done
chrismuzz replied to tonybassplayer's topic in General Discussion
is there any way to stop it from accessing the mobile version and use the real version instead?
Yep On the bottom should be a 'Full Version' button. -

Yep when I had my iPhone I was constantly on BC -
It's a good idea to have the terms and conditions come up, I've just had a re-read of them. The only suggestion would be a button you can click on to say you've read it, which will stop it coming up again for that particular forum.

string advice for Roscoe 5string (35")?
chrismuzz replied to Bassdude BE's topic in Accessories and Misc
Coloured ball ends are D'Addario strings They do a 5 string set of 50 - 135, and if you want bigger, you'll be pleased to know they do single string gauges from .018 up to .145! The best place I've found for them is http://www.stringbusters.com Don't forget to have a look at the 'Single Strings' section down the left hand side! -
String Gauge: Mostly D#, 2 Songs In Drop C#
chrismuzz replied to Jack's topic in Accessories and Misc
I use exactly the same tuning in my cover band! I've had pretty good results using 45 65 85 105, but with stainless steel hexagonal cored strings so they feel stiffer. Brands that I know of that use hex cores are D'Addario, Elites, and Elixirs. EDIT: Oh, and I just remembered Newtone Strings! They use hex cores too, and you can ask them to custom make you a set if you do want to go heavier than a .110 -
I should be allowed to join for using nice, expensive and clean Markbass amps... but running cheap Peaveys and multiple dirt pedals through them

You don't see many of these around...
chrismuzz replied to chaypup's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I think they sound a bit cold and sterile. You can't beat the tone of a nice bit of wood. -
I'm actually inclined to agree with the luthier. We all know about Fender's less than perfect QC.. And I have a neck on my first ever Peavey with a knot that looks very similar to this one around the 17th fret... Which is exactly where the frets begin to buzz! It was my uncle who pointed it out to me, who happens to have been playing bass for the last 40 odd years, AND is an extremely talented carpenter, so knows his way around a plank of wood! The issue could well be sorted with a fret dress and nothing more though! And with a bit of luck there will be no more drying out / moving by the wood,
I get the feeling that some are separating feel and tight playing. You know you can have both ;-).
I can't

All these years and I never knew it was a Fender. Bizarre!! It's a shame they don't make more unique instruments, despite the fact that they don't need to.
Like others have said, a load of isolated bass tones sound like crap (Ellefson's excepted IMO). Even some of Harris' old stuff sounds naff: But still amazing within the band setting, right?
Totally! Cliff Burton is another one. I would never pick his tone on Ride The Lightning for my own setup.. But it's the best 'in the mix' tone of every Metallica album I've ever heard! Especially the slides during the verse riff on For Whom The Bell Tolls, they always make me pull involuntary metal faces http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FO6MU7uqzs

one finger (or thumb) vs two finger alternate plucking?
chrismuzz replied to tedmanzie's topic in Theory and Technique
All of these techniques are equally legitimate. Whatever lets you make the noise you want...
This! Having more options is never a bad thing though of course -
It's been deleted. I missed it!

My favourite ones are where the drums and bass are the only tracks you can hear. Makes a song so much easier to learn, and many of them are quite enjoyable! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LCIzZCWRmQ

Meshuggah...

Just out of interest, check out how ridiculously tight Dave Ellefson's playing is! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rN5N84lUFY

Some of it is the tone. To get a bass tone to cut through you often have to put in a lot of high mids, which makemost players sound sloppy. I remember recording some bass for a melodic death metal band I was in. I thought I did a really great job til I heard the track back! Sounded dead good in the mix though! I don't see these isolated tracks as a bad thing, as long as you're not blindly assuming "this is sh*t". It makes me feel better about my own playing though!
You don't need any basses "out". Keep them under the bed/sofa until you need one.
But it's much better to show them off! Also, I'm much more likely to randomly pick one up and play it for 20 minutes if I can actually see it! All of my basses with new strings on stay in the case.. The ones with older strings are always out,and fair game!

Just look at how big the "Show us your rig", and "Post your pedalboard" threads are. We all love to admire our sexy bass gear
-
If you only want 2 or 3 effects and a tuner, I would recommend single pedals. Much simpler, and as good as multis are these days, you are likely to find seperate pedals that do what you want to a bit better.

Hooray! A bassist who doesn't want that "all treble and nothing else on a jazz bridge pickup" slap tone. I HATE that so much! All good stuff here! I'm sure you've tried this already, but it hasn't been mentioned in the thread.. But when I mess around with slap bass, my thumb hits the strings somewhere between the fretboard and the neck pickup. Believe it or not, I've seen people slap right over the bridge pickup before!

FS: Ibanez Roadster 1979 Black. £230. PRICE DROP!
chrismuzz replied to binky_bass's topic in Basses For Sale
I don't like modern Ibanez basses, but any from this period are incredible beasts! The comments above about this one sounding like a Stingray are bang on! In fact I much preferred the Ibanez sound, more mids! I'm pretty sure that big single coil pickup is the same as the ones they used in the Musician Bass which is also a wonderful example of Japanese craftsmanship. -
Played a bike rally last year where every single electrical item was run off one generator. It still worked! But cut out twice during our set

I just got another drive pedal so it's time for an update then I reckon! The signal path is as follows: Stageclix Jack > Aguilar TLC > Ashdown Lomenzo Hyperdrive > Sansamp PBDDI > Marshall Jackhammer > Zoom B3 All of the drive pedals have pretty low/medium gain settings so are very usable together or on their own. The 2nd preset on the Sansamp is horribly clanky when I want to go stupid... And if I need fuzz I use a Bass Muff on the B3 with some reverb

We ask for £200 if it's the first time we play somewhere. We occasionally get as little as £150, but often get more... We once got £400 for a pub gig when the place was rammed! A local venue, knowing our reputation very well refused to give us any more than £50.. We told them where to go!! It's not about the money for us, but when they're one of the biggest rock pubs in the area who can clearly afford to pay at least as much as some of the *ahem* less prestiged venues around, that's just taking the piss.
