1.
ScrumpyMike - congrats, she's a beauty! Has a sort of Alembic look to it. Very nice
Agree - looks lovely... Alembic meets JD to my eyes but a beaut! And a bargain.
  2. ...or you could just play it... a lot and let nature take its course. (But that Sandberg looks awesome...)
  3.
How does the headphone out sound on these? I think the cab simulation only effects the DI and headphone out. I'm after something with a really great sounding headphone out.
I echo Opticaleye's comments above and can certainly recommend you try one. (Can't recommend you buy unheard as grit and overdrive tones seem to be deeply personal!) However, I'd add a caveat: Channel 1 is quiet with a pleasing amp-rig heft. (Unlike many here I like the 'woof' the cab sim adds.) Channel 2 is higher gain so an element of hiss is introduced as you get hotter. Cold fusion layers these tones so point 2 above applies Hot fusion multiplies these sounds so if you're pushing the gains and channel 1 volume and treble, yes you will get noise alongside your barking bass tone. Keep things under control gain wise and you get a very pleasing, musical gritty articulation which sounds superb through headphones. Recommend you take a trip to Bass Direct or Andertons further South and try one. Make sure you watch the promo vids and note down some sample settings so your trial is not a frantic knob twiddling fest (ooh er!) to try and get a good tone. It's quite a sophisticated bit of kit with a large amount of variability based on your bass settings, the channel interactions and the mid controls.
  4. Blimey... major surgery there.... Personally I love the super hi-fi sound of the GB circuit... Nails the Super-J sound but also I like the forky neck pick-up sound for rock too. Hope it works out...
  5. Have to agree with the previous posters... I have the same channel issue and also the recording pre-amp they use (3 leaf?) makes all the basses sound the same! Maybe it's the demonstrator guy picking the same bridge pick-up Jaco snark-o-tone? I've only really heard a distinct tonal character in the very singular basses that crop up now and again such as the Alembics... Worth a trip to the shop though! Oodles of great gear...
  6. Loving mine too. Nails the John Wetton/Chris Squire tubey-driven treble clank. I'm liking its rig-sounding 'heft' when run through the computer. Masses of low end and air... the cab sim helps here. I'm still learning as it has three parameters that introduce all manner of complexity: 1) Mid & sweep - these two controls on channel two interact to give a very different character to the sound 2) Fusion level - balancing the clean and high-gain channels 3) Cold and hot fusion - this is a powerful feature but get it wrong and it reduces your volume or introduces high-gain hiss on hiss. Get right and you get a more over-driven Geddy sound. But note, the distortion is not insane so you'll probably still need an additional boost if you want to get all Billy Sheehan. Note, this pedal accentuates the settings on your bass so the pick-up selection and boost/cuts are a key part of the mix. (I suppose that's an obvious statement but in the past my amps haven't always been so sensitive to the input.) I have to take out much of my GB's bass control otherwise I just nuke the signal chain (through a computer). The treble and mid then becomes the 'who do you want to be?' selection. Spent the last two weeks playing the intro lick to 'Heart of the Sunrise' badly but enjoying the sound. A/B'd this against a Darkglass VMTdeluxe in Bass Direct. That was a lovely pedal too with more distortion but less overall heft. The Two Notes sounds like a rig whereas the VMT provides more of a mid & treble snark, albeit a very pleasurable one but I was looking to replace an amp rig for recording so the Two Notes fits the bill. Recommend anyone trying to introduce some crunch tries one out... Successfully gritted-up my hi-fi clean GB! (Not sure Bernie would approve...)
  7. This could be helpful to you BS EBS pedal fans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNZW4xrGKTQ Comparison of 'standard' and deluxe models.
  8. Surprised nobody's raised another of JP's influences, and yet another STH 'inspiration' in Davy Gragan - 20s in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWeejHJxGjs
  9.
As I said, divisive. Lists suck, but certainly give rise to debate. My favourite tub thumpers are all there, but spread amazing widely, from the top 10 (Copeland, which I think is high) to barely scraping in (Steve Jordan, way too low). Ultimately it's a bit of fun which, to paraphrase Elvis Costello, tells much about lists and nothing about the musicians contained therein. Bruford was in the top 10 I think, certainly top 20.
#16 actually but no Mike Portnoy or Mick Burt (Chas n Dave). Not being sexist but there's a frankly an unrealistic quota of female drummers in there... (*runs to nuclear bunker*)
  10. Well this guy's using one and he sounds more like Billy S than Billy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzBErdlI79Y
  11. Nice! Love JJ. On top of the recommendations so far, I'd add Chad Wackerman's first to solo albums. For me, along with Stanley, he's Alembic's premier sound ambassador... His basses always sound huge! (Listen to the samples for 3 and 5: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/chadwackerman) Great fretless Alembic on #5 there. P.S. Fretted GWB35?
  12. Hi all, This guy has been mentioned before on BC but I don't think he gets the credit he deserves... LM is a force of nature...! Jaco inspired sure but he's got his own thing going on. Good stuff starts at 2:30... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT6n-oIrLCQ Aimless noodling? visog
  13. Good advice so far... Here's some stuff I know helps:

Hydration & general good health (including upper-body exercise)
Good technique (including a light touch - as mentioned before, seek out the Gary Willis lowest posible tension to sound a note exercise.)
Good monitoring so you don't over-play to hear yourself
Knowing your material so you don't tense up at difficult bits or moments of uncertainty
Good posture
A good strap/a light bass
Warm-ups
Don't always follow the above but there we go... Here's some stuff that may help - but I can't vouch for...

Cod liver oil
Glucosamine
https://powerballs.com/rehabilitation.php
Lower action & lower string tension (lighter strings)
Avoiding stress & tension manifesting in the hands, i.e. making a fist subconsciously or during sleep (so fall asleep with flat hands)
Good luck and hope you get better

    What effects?

My two penneth: I suspect with a Status you have a very clean sound for which you might want to investigate dirtying up a bit for rock. In which case an overdrive/distortion would be good - the tone here is hugely subjective and can get expensive so perhaps a Behringer BDI21 would be a good start. Chorus works well for rock in quieter/melodic passages so take a look at those too. visog
  15.
All of the above but how about Ike Willis especially on Zappa's Joes Garage ? Great voice
Agreed - many a fond hours listening to his ironic take on Scientology...
  16. Nice thing - sure it sounds awesome. Be good to A/B with a regular (thru-neck Spitfire). Still not there on the shape vs. some the SC's from Ken Smith and Surine say... No coil tap switch?
  17.
For me, it was Jon Anderson all the way.
Got there as I was writing it!!!!!
  18. Prog voices for me: Jon Anderson, John Wetton and Greg Lake. Quite like Peter Gabriel's too but it's failing lately. Sting can sing well... Tom Yorke has an interesting quality Female I'd go Aretha when not doing awful pop, +1 Bjork, Kate Bush, Joni... Annie Lennox can sing but god she's annoying. Maddie Prior kills it and Maggie Riley too. +1 for Annie Haslam
  19. Thanks for the update JB... sounds very promising
  20. Oh and this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU7WFZuCV5s In memory of Harry Patch
  21.
puff the magic dragon had me in tears, but I was about 8 at the time
Me too! As well as: Born Free Ring of Bright Water On a more serious note I'd go with anything from the Heijera era Joni canon... so melancholic. Currently classic Yes is still raw with Chris Squire's recent passing... e.g. Wondrous Stories with his comically aggressive high-stabbing bass right the way through a ballad together with his killer vocal harmonisations...
  22. Thanks for the update JB... will make the trip to Bass Direct to try one out when they're in stock...
  23.
A quick fiddle with the pedal at home tells me the important things: 1. The DI works nicely 2. There is a huge range of sounds available 3. The hype is to be believed!
Thanks for the update JB - was waiting for this update all week! Can you report on the noise and click issues Meddle experienced? Are you happy with the distorted tone? Are the cold and hot fusion modes usable rather than a gimmick? Can you run effects on one channel and change to the hot channel for boost/soloing, etc.?
  24. I'm not an expert in the field but this caught my eye when browsing earlier... worth investigating on bass as it sounds good on guitar... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frvFUrrffDw
  25. Just getting into this myself... So what I've discovered so far is that for drones and ambient echoes, the bass is to low and quickly becomes muddy. So the solution? As we don't want to sully ourselves with those thin stringed instruments is to get an octave up pedal... many choices but a cheap but good one is a Rowin octpus before you do your ditto looper... And then, for ambient goodness trial a stacked delay or Strymen (if you can afford one!). The TC Flashback Triple is a lot of echo for £200 and you get to stack in parallel or serially. Here's a great YouTuber giving you the skinny on this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwyiN3wF2_Q
