1. Old Sandbergs are to die for... (new shapes... meh...)
2. Agreed - he's a total monster.... but I do wonder about the endorsements.
3. So what's happened with his Ken Smith Burner signature?
4.
I think it is more the way the band were at the time, rather than the music itself.
Nah... I'm a huge Yes fan and there are some great moments on on sides 1, 2, 3(2nd half) and 4 (start and end) but it's at least a whole side too long. See if wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't proved that they could concentrate their prodigious ideas into a single album on the mighty CTtE and Relayer that book-ended Topographic.
5.
Deep Purple's "Come Taste the Band". Most Purple fans hated it as there was no Richie, but I liked it and still play it from time to time now.
It's got trumpets on it! Trumpets!!! Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6.
IMO, Larry klein butchered, and I really mean butchered so much of this stuff, which you can witness on youtube, in the tour which came to wembley in the early eighties.
How would you follow Jaco and move Joni's music on? (For the record, I'd love more Blue, Court & Spark and Hejira but you know as an artist she isn't ever going to go back there.)
7.
Yes....Close to the Edge. I played my original copy, when it first came out, so much I literally wore it out and had to buy another. I know every beat, every note and every lyric by heart. I bought the CD version when it was released but bought another vinyl copy a couple of years ago. Vinyl still sounds better than the CD on a decent system. If I could only own one album for the rest of my life it would be Close to the Edge, without a doubt.
What Mike said 100%
8. Perhaps this will help gauge the health of the live music scene: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-38568269 Depends on the seven cities they survey I guess... Personally I leave a place as soon as a band strikes up unless I've chosen to go there for that purpose.
9. Inspired by Musicman20's new Ibanez Ashula thread, I took a click over to Ibanez' Bass Workshop page. Whoa - loads of bass goodies. Check out the updated single cut Terra Firmas and the new models. Gorgeous! http://www.ibanez.com/eu/products/bws.html They deserve credit for their intriguing R&D at reasonable prices...
10. Can you imagine unsheathing that at the 'Dog and Partridge' for 'Sex on Fire'. ... nor can I. Glad they're trying new stuff though....
11.
It's all scouse banter and should be treated as such. I like the guy. For the record, Jazz doesn't like Noel Gallagher either.
Scouse! He's as Mancunian as they come! I think he's being deliberately controversial as ever but he does have a point in that it is hugely self-indulgent in that proponents expect an audience to sit through their 2/5/1 practise over a set of 50+ year old songs.
12.
If they did a torzal twist with fanned frets, that would really mess with your noggin!
They do! See BD's page link in post above. And also a short scale which may provide yet further help for CTS sufferers...
13. Bass Direct usually have one or two in stock for you to try if you're a right-hander: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Little_Guitar_Works.html Not cheap but apparently they're high end basses with literally a unique design twist...
14.
Beautiful bass, I remember these well during the 80's. Is it true that Ashley started out building basses in his garden shed, or am I confusing this with another maker?
Possibly Bernie Goodfellow although I'd imagine it's a fairly common route for many builders before they set-up a more formal workshop when things take off.
15.
We that's quite nifty playing... * mumbles if it's actually him*
OK found some documentary evidence of TM Stevens with John Mclaughlin.... and its pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBcj96KuRm8 Not strictly Mahavishnu Orchestra - it's one of his later projects but some great playing from TMS none the less...
16. Thumbs-up.... nice 'grand piano' tone
17. Wayfarers - check, floral shirt - check, belly on full paunch - check Now remove frequencies below 1 KHz the bass guitar. I give you Level 42! Bit harsh as I fit the above description as well although not as adept as Mr King..
18.
For me, then, if I don't convert, I need a 5er with a nut width not exceeding 1.75". Any such thing?
Wow - that's narrow
19. > Has anyone here converted a 4 string to a 5 string? God no. You can get perfectly serviceable 5s for the price of a 4 to 5 conversion bridge. Just buy a 5... unless you actually mean, 'I want to have a go at converting a 4 to 5'... in which case knock yourself out... but don't expect anyone to buy the results unless to turn it back to a 4...
20.
Dave Swift is a new endorsee
Right so... all good players, etc and good challenge to my point. But I was really referring to a romantic musical hero we aspire to be rather than the jobbing functional musicians you cite.. Which is what the Ibby's are in fact - jobbing and functional. Don't get me wrong - I'm an owner of multiple Ibbys and my first proper instrument was a Blazer sat behind me as I write this. Currently lusting after pretty-much all their bass workshop range which for a big manufacturer I think is a great bit of product R&D and should be applaud. Now if only they can distil mojo and pour a little into each truss rod cavity...
21. Anybody played an Alembic Essence...........? Yes. Seem to recall Stuart Zender had one.
22. Name anyone who plays one...? Not accepting tier-3 obscure heavy metal. Fieldy does not count as he's silly. Right so everyone has said Gary Willis... good call. Great bassist but entirely singular views on a bass. So anyone else? Without tattoos on their face?
23. Sad to see this in the news... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-38370464 I suppose it's partly my fault as I was only an occasional buyer of 'Prog' magazine but I worry a little that this is yet another nail in the coffin for what is increasingly becoming the music of the last century.
24. Pino - tasteful, talented and... dull... Preferred him when he had a bit of individuality and sprayed fretless all over the songs.
25. From Rod Stewart's band for one I remember...
