Flipping basses for profit – fair game or not cool?
bassbiscuits replied to Allaboutthebass's topic in General Discussion
I tend to think that as long as no one has been ripped off (either the original seller, or a subsequent buyer) then there's no harm done. If both sides are satisfied with the asking price, then its a deal. If you're lucky enough to pick up a genuine bargain, which you sell down the line at a profit, then that's fine too. I've never had the money to buy, sell or own masses of gear anyway. I could probably count on one hand the number of real bargains I've had in donkey's years of playing. Most of them I've kept, and some I've sold on because I needed funds more than I needed that bit of gear. Most of the time I'm just aiming to avoid making too much of a loss on something I no longer need (which isn't always successful either!). But what happens to it after that, and how much someone else might want to sell it for in future etc is not in my control and none of my business really. -
I don’t think you’ve spent enough time with one if that’s your opinion. Technique makes up for the lack of electronic sophistication.

Napoleon Bona, Parts One & Two - Budgie Edit - Gah! Now my post makes no sense. I started with Thunder's Loser, (Boney losing at Waterloo and all that) but rethought it for Budgie, but now it's a total non sequitur

Thanks for the nudge, I had given up. Their servers are still crawling, but I am seeing progress!

Used to live in Berlin. Those were the days. Got a Sandberg Electra with Delano Noiseless PUs + new Preamp for 250. An Epiphone Casino for 150, SM57 for 30 € and so on. Now in London and it's not nearly as good. Saves money though

Any suggestions for a 1 x 8" cab for practice?
esmail11 replied to Bass Culture's topic in Amps and Cabs
If you decide to go the DIY route, getting the panels pre-cut really makes the process easier (especially if you’re not fully tooled up). You can actually order MDF or birch plywood sheets cut to your exact size online — I’ve used MDF Direct before and the precision was spot on. Makes speaker builds a lot less stressful! -

At the very least we get to stop the complaints over it not having had a phaser like it’s somehow the most important effect ever.

The studio figured out the issue with the captures https://www.tone3000.com/tones/steven-taylor-tone-pack-41791 I’ve not tried any of them yet but might as well share.

Of course it is... I clearly struggle to notice the difference between four tuner holes and six 🤦♂️ But I can appreciate that intonation could be vexing. Thanks for replying 👍

Took a quick lunchtime trip up into beautiful Northumberland to see local electronics wizard Dave Coates who diagnosed and fixed the issue in about five minutes. As suspected, one of the four legs of the volume pot board was loose in the main board. A quick whizz over with the soldering iron and she’s as good as new.

Hi buddy, it's a bass neck but I've seen people do a straight up conversation with guitar necks before, the issue is more around intonation than tension

These are some of my favourite genres too, and agree that modern gear can do a reasonable version of that old school tone; but to my ears you need an old valve amp to get THAT sound. I use an early silver-face Fender Bassman 135 on a MusicMan HD115 ported cab, loaded with a JBL D140. This rig produces the best bass sound I have ever got by a country mile and a lot of people (incl. audience and other musicians) have said as much. The right bass is an important part of the mix too. You need a Fender P or J or a real MusicMan Stingray (the EB versions don't sound or play as good IMO). For recording I've run a line from the amp and a mic from the cab and blended the two signals to get THAT sound. I don't use any pedals either, as I want to keep the signal from bass to amp to speaker/desk as free of interference as possible. This really does make a huge difference! However good the pedal/s it/they still compromise the signal from the instrument. I sometimes run a Randall bright box on top of this rig too, for extra brightness and definition, and if I want to get the sound a bit phatter and dirtier, I jump the channels to use both sides of the preamp.

There are some suggestions in this thread: https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/466753-fitting-tuners-if-headstock-holes-are-too-big/ Most of the links still seem to work.

I’ve gone full circle on this, back in the day when I started earning a few quid I bought precisions and loved them, then I got the jazz bass itch and played only jazzes for many years, they gave me the nice lows I preferred for reggae and dub, now I’m into both but really appreciate the sound of the P bass more than I did then, I couldn’t be without either

Darkglass Element - Headphone Amp & CabSim with Bluetooth Used for home practice. Can do loads more than this, I just used it to play along with music on a computer, connect via Bluetooth. Easy and intuitive to use. Only selling as I got an Anagram which does that now. As new boxed condition apart from velcro on the back.

Disappointing new bass day...I would appreciate some opinions.
12stringbassist replied to N64Lover's topic in Bass Guitars
I don't think it is acceptable for a guitar maker to excuse body damage, untidy work and bad electronics by saying that the instrument is 'a prototype'. That's garbage. You asked for a neat, clean and functional custom instrument and have paid through the nose for it. Reading through the topic, I see he's going to do remedial work so you are satisfied with it. That leaves you without the bass for a period, worried about how it will turn up next time and hopefully not out of pocket. All for the stuff he should have got right as a matter of course. I really do hope you get your dream bass back and would love to see full photos (logo obscured if need be). I totally understand not naming the builder while you are dealing with getting the faults corrected.
