  2. I bought this in 1993 and gigged and recorded with it, but I've hardly played this bass in years so I'm putting it up for sale. This is, as far as I know, original. Someone said that it would have come from the factory with a black scratchplate but if you look at pictures of Kim Deal playing her identical bass you'll see that has a clear one too - I think it was the solid red painted ones that had the black pickguard but hey. It's well-worn. Plenty of dinks, bucklerash on the back but it all works really well and it sounds and plays amazing - last time it went to Bass Gallery for a setup and they said everything was good. Frets are in good nick. The volume pot has a slight crackle but it's sat in the case for months so a bit of use would sort that out I recon. Weight is just over 4kg according to my kitchen scales. Ideally you could come around to me in London SE14 to try it before buying. The price DOES NOT INCLUDE THE CASE as it's the only hard case I have but I'll chuck it in for an extra £75. I recently bought a new bass and have the big cardboard box so I can package it up very securely for posting but you'd have to arrange the courier and take the risk. I am not desperate to sell this, it's just that I have stopped playing 4-strings and have not played the 'Ray in ages so it's taking space and could be used by someone else. I asked the team at Bass Direct about selling it for me and they said they'd put it up at £1500 so I think £1350 is fair for a private sale. I'm not really interested in trades as I don't really want anything else but try me. I'm a weak man, but I have very little space for storage so big amps/cabs are not possible and I play 5-strings. Any questions just ask. IMG_4579.MOV IMG_4576.MOV

  3. Hey guys, has anyone ever tried one the NS Dimensions 5 fan fret basses? I've been eyeing up one and just curious to hear others thoughts on them.
  4. In terms of sound? It's a little difficult to be objective. I have too much respect for Rob and the Status team to be drawn into direct comparisons, they have made some fantastic necks. So maybe a batch 1 customer can make a comment after they have installed their neck. What I can say though is our neck construction is inspired by more heavily by Steinberger. We like the solid full sound of Steinberger necks, the even string response and snappy attack which isn't too aggressive. However the end result can also depend very much on the body wood. So if you wanted to aim for a timbre with more mids, go for a softer wood like light weight mahogany or sapele, alder or basswood. Lightweight swamp ash might be growly as well but it also brings snappy highs. Also set your action as low as possible to reduce string tension.

  6. I would work out where the cuts are likely to be. Then, before cutting, I would smear the area with some superglue, let it dry and then cut. Perhaps even add a small piece of tape over the area too.
  7. Thanks... To be fair I did cut them really carefully & crimped the ends to prevent the windings from unravelling. Also with stringing through body would have taken some excess length of the long scale strings.
  8. Ha ha, fair enough, I did it once and it unraveled within seconds, but that’s life I guess. Beautiful trio there 👍
  9. Not wanting to contradict any advice stating it's a bad idea, but I did it. Had a set of cut down 34" Labella tape wounds on one of my Squier Vista Musicmasters (pink) with no issues.
  10. Argh. I also have to drop out 😭 Hope everyone has a great day, apologies to those wanting to see the Super Twin 😢
  11. Apologies there. Dave
  12. As a gentleman of a certain age, neither me or my car is interested in hernia inducing 15/18” subs. So my interest was piqued when @Happy Jack started his small, lightweight sub quest. After receiving many recommendations, he found the Citronic Casa 10BA. Having sold my JBL subs, I had a few groats to spend and ended up being the owner of one. I was firmly bitten by GAS now and after hearing it, ordered a second. I had a hernia operation on Sept 2nd so we had kept the diary clear and close to the end of my 6 week “ no heavy lifting” spell, I developed a rotator cuff injury to my shoulder so no real world resting, even in rehearsals. I will report back later when I have more. So earlier in the year, I had no intention of buying a new PA and a pair of 8” tops and 10” subs were not even considered. While they would not do a really big gig, for the pubs clubs and parties we do, I am sure they will be more than enough.
  13. Now you’re talking.
  14. Although Facebook is mostly irritating nonsense I find it very useful for promoting the two bands I’m in. Also for keeping an eye on venues and other acts working in the same area. About a half dozen times over the last three years-ish we’ve picked up gigs when venues put messages on Facebook for last-minute replacements. I often think that musicians who reject social either don’t gig or leave all the promotional donkey work to others.
  15. Sorry all, some last minute stuff has come up which means that I won’t be able to be there tomorrow. Have a fun day, all. So sad to miss it.
  16. £12 for the replacement pickguard including delivery ( although a wait to get it into the New Year) was expecting a lot more so pleasantly surprised 😀
  17. Ive got tapes on a few of my jazzes, I’ve never tried it but I wouldn’t cut them down past the silks myself, can’t they just be returned for the right ones
  18. HPW said mine was bubinga too until i asked him to look again. Afzelia Was the standard wood for Thumbs from this time...
  19. Sorry if I misunderstood! No harm done. Its something I have had done (via a luthier) in the past so its obviously not so uncommon. Shimming the whole length of the neck will not alter the height of the action relative to the fingerboard I think, because its all one piece. All the shim will do is alter the height of the neck/ bridge block relative to the body wood, I think.
  20. ah ...problem is back on ...for some reason i blanked out the xl sticker and purely focused on the insert wording ...so yes i still have a problem...so can you cut down tape wounds without them unwinding?
