Marc S started following Columbus jazz bass - refurbed.
-
A Columbus Jazz was the first bass I ever played. A workmate owned it, and let me play it for a short while. This was before I had ever even thought about playing bass. (I had the loan of an awful Jedson guitar at the time). I had pondered picking one of these up - just because they're inexpensive, and for a trip down memory lane.... This is indeed a really nice restoration job 😀 GLWTS

Phil Starr started following Gig cab help...

First of all I think it's probably the room causing a particular problem. I think we've all experienced that and I share that opinion. However I'm seriously worried about your hearing. I use a single modest Celestion 10" cab quite frequently as on-stage monitoring and it's plenty for my needs, it does have a horn too though which helps articulation. Those four Celestions will knock out 130db which is easily enough to damage your hearing and that Crown amp is no weakling either. I would seriously consider in-ears, you might not like them but being so hard of hearing that you have to give up gigs altogether you will hate even more. It comes to all of us in the end and some hearing loss may already be part of your problem. As to your problem you need to boost the mids and cut the bass. The bass is where the room resonances are and the fact your sound egineer was struggling with the kick sound says there was a problem in the room. On stage you'd also be hearing all the lowest frequencies from the PA which are omnidirectional, just as loud behind as they are in front. With the PA probably louder than the stage levels you almost won't need any bass at all from your amp. I suspect you were close to the PA? I've gone as far as cutting all the bass below 120hz by 24db/8ve before now. Look to boost 200-2kHz as Bill suggests. Also look to get something designed to get the mids to your ears like the LFSys Monaco which has the horn rotated to project a vertical rather than horizontal plane. It might also be worth wearing ear plugs, they do muffle the sound a bit but at the sound levels you were operating at tiny muscles in your ear contract to protect your hearing, just lowering the sound levels might help you get enough information to follow your own playing. Counter intuitively you might hear more with plugs in place

I use a Vox Bass Amplug, connected to my laptop and some headphones. Cheap and cheerful. Does the job nicely.

Time has come to let go of this great bass rig. Had this for gigs but only got through one before the band had issues again. If I play again will be going to a power amp/modelling pedal and In ear setup as most of the places I can practice are quiet or have cabs available. Head sold ..... Markbass MB58R 104 PURE Bass Cab 4ohm 800watt version This is a light exceptionally portable bass cab With great bass response which is surprising after you have carried it in. Has an adjustable tweeter and is just a great cab. Weight is around 16kg so an easy one person lift. Sounds great is great would keep it but is just taking up spare room space. Featuring four 10" custom designed neodymium speakers housed in a spacious cabinet, it produces articulate tones with a rich. fulfilling bass response. In addition, the 104 PURE boasts a clear high end through a built-in Hi-Fi tweeter. This formidable speaker can handle up to 800 Watts, so you've got ample headroom for those situations where you need plenty of volume. And speaking of situations, the MB58R is easy to get situated thanks to its incredibly light construction! Utilising innovative material for a lighter frame, Markbass have produced a cab that's easy to transport and astonishingly powerful. Crossover Frequency: 3.5 Khz Frequency Response: 40hz to 20khz Sensitivity Db Spl: 103 Db Impedance: 4 Ohms Reflex: Rear 578mm x 600mm x 470mm (£500 on its own but collection only on the cab as wouldn't have a box etc) Any questions feel free to ask. Would consider a Nice Jap Pbass or a PJ of some sort as a trade /part trade

The pickups just say emg in gold on the bottom right. I did see a video where on of the retailers were saying they are designed standard size so you could upgrade etc if needed.

Congrats. I have a cheaper BB and I’d love to level up to one of these some day. I don’t think this model ever had emgs as standard, must have been modded by the previous owner. Got any pics?

Although no one wishes they spent more time at work I do think many might think 'I wish I lived in a nicer place, had more holidays and saw more of the world, eat better meals, retired earlier, financially supported my kids better'... all of which unfortunately require £ which you usually get more of the more work is done. Don't get me wrong though, I'm no fan if spending time at work just for the sake of it. Work smarter not harder n'all that. But I do think it's an alright means to an end. I sort of figure 'fair enough', it is a balancing act.

No. Originally it would have had Yamaha alnico pickups.

It’s really easy. Took me less than 5 mins to do mine. i have drive on and off, modulation on and off, patch up and patch down. The only reason i change patches is because you can only have one type of modulation in a patch. Sometimes i want chorus, sometimes phaser. its a well thought out system. You just assign a pair of midi numbers to each foot switch. Maybe I’m missing something but I’ve had to assign a number to turn it on, and a number to turn it off for each foot switch. Easy enough to do. You can also set each switch to turn multiple blocks on and off. I have the eq block also come on when i use modulation, with a bit of low end reduction and overall level down slightly. the good thing is, becuse you are using midi CC numbers these wok across all the patches, so you you don’t have to set each one up. In fact i let my guitarist (who has just got a GP-5) use my chocolate at the last rehearsal and nothing needed adjusting for it to work. If the chocolate is powered (USB phone charger is fine), it will also power the GP-5 which is also cool.

Sorry, yes, I was talking of recording - one channel is M and one is S. They are then decoded for convential L/R playback - if done on a desk or patchbay as you mentioned, the S signal is panned left, and is then duplicated, phase inverted, and panned right, then both are combined with the M signal. But almost all DAWs and a lot of hardware recorders and monitoring utilities now have the matrix built in, or offer it as a plugin, which is quicker and takes one track instead of three! When auditioning L/R material through and M/S matrix (ie soloing the M or S elements) you're right, M=L+R and S=L-R., and boosting the S component will make things wider.

Hammond XPK-100 MIDI Bass Pedals

Up for sale is this beautiful 12 bit sampler from around 1988. It's a Roland S550 with 8 separate outs and a top end GOTEK drive (with LCD screen) ready stocked with most of the available sample libraries and several hundred blank floppies. The sound in the video is the classic 'Air' choir. The library runs the full gamut of Roland's offering plus lots of other stuff including drum machines/ synths. acoustic instruments etc It's very powerful with the multiple outs. Monitor included. It's B/W and is essential for running the S550 to its full extent. It's in great nick and includes the original box and a manual etc It's a fantastic piece of gear and sounds very good indeed, but I need to streamline due to lack of space. Apologies for the rubbish pic of the back, it's a bit close to the wall for a wide shot but it looks nice and clean and, most importantly, all the outputs work! Pick up only nr Tun Wells/Ashford IMG_4455.mov
