rwillett started following Small wired in-ear headphones for practise - Any recommendations
-
Hi I'm looking at the smallest setup for portable use, so using my NUX Mighty Plug Pro and a set of wired headphones. I have a pair of over ear headphones that are very good, Austrian Audio but are a bit bulky. As my iPhone no longer has a headphone socket AND my daughter appears to have lost my rather nice wired Bose headphones, I'm unsure what to get. Also does playing bass need specific ones? I've never used in ear monitors and am unsure if they are the same as wired ear plugs such as the Bose ones above. I can't see me needing IEM's for the foreseeable future, so any recommendations for in ears for practise purpises less than £100 would be very helpful. Rob

Bass not cutting through? Loudness could be the answer
Uncle Rodney replied to Phil Starr's topic in Amps and Cabs
Maybe a little of topic. Last band I was in the guitarist (Blackmore impersonator) who was a Phd. in Physics could could not "get" room resonances, nodes and anti-notes. I tried many times to explain it but stopping when could see it meant nothing to him. I also tried to explain speaker directivity and dispersion due to me saying "don't point your speaker cab at me!!" protests. Thinking back now, I suspect he could only think in academic terms (what is written in textbooks) with no connection or sense to how these were applied in the real world. I said to him once, "if I didn't know you were Phd in Physics I'd think you are a slow learner." Back to Basschat - the best (amateur) bass player I've seen would turn up at the gig, set up on stage then spend no more that 10 mins getting a well balance sound (knob twiddling). I recall he had at 1x15" and a 4x10" two cab setup every time and always sounded right where it needed to be. I never heard him complain the sound was bad at a gig, he seemed to have the "ear" and knew how to get the right sound. -
Yamaha make consistently good basses at each price point. Much like Toyota; totally dependable, but seen by some, as a bit dull. The MIJ examples are truly superb instruments. I just scored a MIT BB2004, which is a very nice instrument. If I had a gripe it is the general lack of interchangeability of the pickups of older versions. Run-of-the-mill replacements normally don’t fit the Yamaha body cavity.

Anything with “Yamaha” on it is fabulous. From my old BB3000S to an RBX175 I had, and a whole bunch of others in between, everything they make is great. One of my current favourites is an RBX A2 5, which is absolutely superb. I recorded with it last week and sounded immense, great low B.

Even Jaco needed a P......

I have one somewhere, but I upgraded the electrics to Vol/Vol/Tone CTS etc. I have a feeling that it was Volume, Blend, Tone originally. Sorry that isn’t a definitive answer.

Best purchase, hands down the tonex one. Can't tell you how good it is when you get the right sound. Never really any bad purchases. -

By far the best bang-per-buck money I've spent this year was the <£100 I spent on my TC Electronic BG250-115 combo. Loud, portable and stupidly cheap. Scruffy, but who cares. -
Cairobill started following TRADE FEELER: Early 2000s Fender PB70US Trade for Yamaha BB2000
-
I have a very nice PB70US here. I love its skinny neck, light weight and overall playability/tone but I'm torn between getting an additional jazz bass (as the Yin to the Yang/ Yang to the Yin) OR, in this ad, an all in one like a BB2000 to give me a bit of P and a bit of J. I know a BB2000 isn't a P or a J, but I had one recently and it would do the job... So, if anyone has a BB2000 they're not using much and fancy a very nice precision, how about a trade? This bass is up only for that one specific trade, thanks. Spec-wise, it's an alder/rosewood precision, about 8.5lbs in weight, great frets, sounds fab, neck is in the jazz/U vein etc Comes in a lovely aged Oly white and light flame neck. Rosewood is veeeeryyy dark. Mmmm. Very nice indeed. Here are pics and vid

I'm sorry but I couldn't tell you how the bridge affects the sound as I don't really have any experience of comparing the two designs. I bought it because I was on the lookout for a semi acoustic to give me that woody sound as the band were doing songs that could benefit from it. It was also bought to replace an acoustic bass that just wasn't holding up at acoustic gigs. I'm very happy with the sound - it's usually played via a clean pre-amp with little shaping into the desk as the natural tone needs nothing else (in my opinion). I had previously tried a Sire GB5 which was a nice bass but uncomfortable to play and the sound was too 'clean'(i.e. not woody). I was fortunate enough to see the AGBR200 2nd hand in GAK and snapped it up.

Many thanks @silverfoxnik and @Wombat, my time is a little tied up for the next few weeks so any help would be hugely helpful. I'll check a few logistics this end and drop you both a PM 🙏 -
Vast improvement, perhaps a little more run-of-the-mill than the stock version but much prettier IMHO. I love the combo of the pearl pickguard, block inlays and fingerboard binding.

Paul very kindly honoured his promise to contact me 1st should he wish to move on the lovely Purple Charvel I sold him 15 years ago. It's now back where it belongs in my collection.... upgraded and in a case.... and delivered to my door. Can't say fairer than that!

Paul S started following Yamaha your thoughts?

I've had a few Yamaha bassess, from a pointy headstock thing I forget the model number of but with a superskinny neck profile to a selection of broad basses - BB414 via a BB424, BB425 to a BB5000 that I imported from Japan. Fabulous things, I was particularly fond of the BB414 which I think, for the money, is hard to beat. Now all gone, mainly because a/ I find them too heavy and b/ I don't play long scale basses any more. What I would like to try, but have yet to own, is the BB VIS - medium scale, slightly lighter body, single pickup broadbass model. Or, if the weight was right, maybe a BB VIIS, which is a PJ variant of the same medium scale, smaller body. What I do still have, and it is arguably the best bass I have ever owned - certainly my favourite - is a Yamaha SB-35. Medium scale 'SG-shaped' double cutaway, single pickup. It is pretty straightforward, nothing complicated about it at all, but it is a joy to play and it just sings. That one is going into my coffin with me.

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2025?
cetera replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
Best purchases: A beautiful Spector Euro CST (Jap ltd version) in desert island blueburst, imported from Japan with the assistance of Bass Japan Direct.: My old Charvel 3B, which I bought back after stupidly selling 15 years ago... and now upgraded with EMG-X pickups. The fantastic LHZ HL-1 HAZard LAMPS preamp pedal. The sound of a classic US Spector Haz Labs preamp in pedal form. Brings all non-Haz loaded basses to life, particularly passive basses! and last, but certainly not least(!!) the amazing LFSys Monaco 600W 8ohm bass cab courtesy of @stevie. Lightweight, punchy, authoritative and loud... with wonderful dispersion. Worst purchases.... none that I can think of. I like to do my research before parting with moolah.... 😉👍 -
It's a practice tool. It isn't meant to be any use on stage. Same form factor as the Boss Katana Go, Fender Mustang Micro, Blackstar Beam Solo, etc, but with the ToneX captures instead of amp models.
